How to Keep a Good Cleaner

Bit of a rant here,

And I'll preface this by saying that only women do this. Men keep out of the way or will go out to leave you space to clean. Maybe women feel some sense of embarrassment at needing a cleaner, I don't know.

Anyway...

When your cleaner is present and especially if the kitchen is something they clean on their visits, do not:

  • Make hot drinks
  • Put the dishwasher on
  • Put laundry on
  • Make a hot, cooked meal
  • Try to "tidy up" or "clean off sides".
  • Put clean crockery away
  • Sort out old clothes
  • Do any sorting of anything.

The reality is that many if not most people have a cleaner because they do not have the time or skill to clean properly. When you try to get ahead of me when I am there and you're not doing it properly, it wastes my time and your money when I have to wait, or do it properly after you. Anything you wanted to do should have been done before I got there. Anything left, I will sort. That is why you have a cleaner.

Please, keep out of the way in one room, or go right out of the house.

I'm about to tell someone that I won't be coming back as their wife won't stop doing this and she's now at home all the time.

how do you know all these cleaners and their policies? Is this an agency you work for? Or just a large group of friends of all cleaners?

It is quite solitary work surely and you’re all in competition with one another?

Genuine question!

There are loads of groups for professional cleaners on places like Facebook. Some global, some local like city wide. We speak about how to scrub toilets and why barkeepers friend is so much better in powder form.

This has to be a wind up.

I don’t think it is
Still, it’s pretty funny but just unintentionally!

Atriangleabout · 30/09/2026 15:48

So I should offer a hot drink

and very very much hope they say no?

Offer one maybe when they arrive or better still, just say help yourself if you want one.

The Robin Hood of cleaners!

Nothing to do with Robin Hood. There arw downsides to having clients who pay top notch. You can rarely exceed their expectations

Order food and grab a Stanley cup of water beforehand. That's what guys do so as to give you the space you need. That's what her husband does when he is home.

My kids eat dinner at 6pm so that’s not going to work!

I don't know if their clients are mostly regulars or one offs. I also have a waiting list, hence why I can drop these people from today at will.

I'm finished in the kitchen of a family home by 4. Obviously.

A 6 month waiting list for one offs? Unlikely

They charge these fees and have long waiting lists because their employers think they are worth it presumably.

Got to go and put away my Ocado so I’ll leave you to argue with others!

Secondaryschool2027 · 30/09/2026 16:06

I'm guessing she's referring to the fact you've previously been to prison.

OrganicDecafEarlGrey · 30/09/2026 16:17

I'm a very part-time self-employed cleaner. Why on Earth would you continue to charge 50 percent less than other cleaners in your area? You could work half your current hours but you choose to continue as you are. Which is bizarre. You clearly don't have low self esteem which is the only reason I can think of for why you'd do this.

Also, there's always time for a cup of tea (you don't need to stop cleaning to drink it).

murasaki · 30/09/2026 16:20

I've offered a bottle of water from the fridge if I happen to be there and its hot, but otherwise don't do any of the things you rightly object to. I also make sure the floors and surfaces are clear before she comes. She's not left me after 10 years so I must be ok!

Entertainment value. I hope @Atriangleabout comes back when the Ocado order has been put away…

Yeah because it depends on how many days a week they work for one, and how many people have prebooked with them. Some of my clients I only see a few times a year ad hoc because they only want cleaning for a specific event like Xmas or visiting family. Do you have a cleaning business yourself?

I’ll leave you to your thread Op.

As the majority have said - these rules work for you. And that’s great.
