How to Keep a Good Cleaner

Bit of a rant here,

And I'll preface this by saying that only women do this. Men keep out of the way or will go out to leave you space to clean. Maybe women feel some sense of embarrassment at needing a cleaner, I don't know.

Anyway...

When your cleaner is present and especially if the kitchen is something they clean on their visits, do not:

  • Make hot drinks
  • Put the dishwasher on
  • Put laundry on
  • Make a hot, cooked meal
  • Try to "tidy up" or "clean off sides".
  • Put clean crockery away
  • Sort out old clothes
  • Do any sorting of anything.

The reality is that many if not most people have a cleaner because they do not have the time or skill to clean properly. When you try to get ahead of me when I am there and you're not doing it properly, it wastes my time and your money when I have to wait, or do it properly after you. Anything you wanted to do should have been done before I got there. Anything left, I will sort. That is why you have a cleaner.

Please, keep out of the way in one room, or go right out of the house.

I'm about to tell someone that I won't be coming back as their wife won't stop doing this and she's now at home all the time.

OP, these are your requirements not the requirements of all cleaners. Probably one for your clients rather than MN 😂

Its a common bug bear for cleaners. As I said, ive seen some pricy ones locally who insist on an empty home.

Why have you put "good cleaners" in air quotes in relation to hot drinks?

Because you say you shouldn’t offer a hot drink to a “good cleaner”

you

These cleaners actually put on their adverts “I want an empty home to clean”?

that doesn’t sound dodgy at all 😆

Did I? Can you point to where I said you shouldn't offer hot drinks to a good cleaner?

I thought I said one of the ways to keep a good cleaner is not to make hot drinks while they are cleaning your home.

I must be someone else. Spooky.

Head. Wall. Bang.

Read your thread title
then read the first point of what we should apparently not do to keep a good cleaner

This is hard!

Atriangleabout · 30/09/2026 15:39

You forgot about this?

When your cleaner is present and especially if the kitchen is something they clean on their visits, do not:

  • * Make hot drinks*

You expect people to not make a cup of tea? Our cleaner comes for 3-4 hours twice a week. I need tea and so does she.

We have had the same cleaner for 19 years and just works around us as we work at home.

You’d be sacked by @Lexibletheflexible !

Their contract says something like "we are able to work in a safer and more efficient way if your home is clear of people and clutter, we may insist on this at times". One of the owners said that they will turn people down if they are going to have a house full of people or of the client is very reluctant to leave them alone.

A cleaner, in their advert, saying that they “may insist” someone vacates their homes? I’d love to see how many responses they get!

Yes that doesnt say that you shouldn't offer anyone a hot drink. It says don't make hot drinks when they're in the middle of cleaning.

You’d love us @Lexibletheflexible DH and I ALWAYS go out immediately our cleaner arrives. It comes from having lived in very small houses! Also I love it because it means we have an excuse to go for coffee together once a fortnight 😁

So I should offer a hot drink

and very very much hope they say no?

LapinR0se · 30/09/2026 15:42

My cleaner comes for 6 hours on Mondays and Thursdays, from 12-6pm. I work from home and unfortunately need to eat, drink and use the loo when she's here...so far I have no complaints considering I pay her extremely well and always perfectly on time. I think those things are more important personally.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 30/09/2026 15:42

@Lexibletheflexible I don't agree. I think it's easy to move around clients and do a good job. Maybe send out these rules with the initial contact. I'd be interested to see how many regular clients you still have in 20yrs.

They're booked up till Feb. And they charge a lot of money. Something like £125 cheapest for a maintaince clean

I've already said as much. I wouldn't charge those prices though

OP posts:

how do you know all these cleaners and their policies? Is this an agency you work for? Or just a large group of friends of all cleaners?

It is quite solitary work surely and you’re all in competition with one another?

Genuine question!

Why not? There’s obviously a market for it if they have a waiting list until Feb

Order food and grab a Stanley cup of water beforehand. That's what guys do so as to give you the space you need. That's what her husband does when he is home.

The Robin Hood of cleaners!
