What small household fixes have made everyday life noticeably easier?

I’m between jobs at the moment and have decided to use some of the time to basically snag my own house.

I’m going through every room and making a note of all the little things that have mildly irritated me for YEARS, but which I’ve somehow just accepted as part of life. You know the sort of thing - not actual problems, just things you regularly curse under your breath and then continue living with for another five years.

So far I have:

1. Ruthlessly slimmed down the kitchen cupboards so I could lose one cupboard and fit a tumble dryer. Every winter I normally spend approximately 46% of my waking hours hanging damp clothes around the house and rotating them like prize livestock, so I’m disproportionately excited about this.

2. Reorganised the Tupperware so every container now lives WITH ITS OWN LID. No more rummaging through 17 lids while slowly losing the will to live.

3. Thrown out about 12 random, ancient, slightly raggedy towels that had been granted permanent residency in the airing cupboard. It now has SPACE. Things are FOLDED.

4. Replaced the sieve that hasn’t had a handle since approximately 2020. Why did I just... live like that?

5. Put bigger shoe storage by the door, so we no longer have the traditional hallway shoe landslide.

6. Rewired a switch so it finally works the way you instinctively expect it to work rather than requiring a tiny moment of irritation every single time.

Honestly, none of this is exactly world peace, but the cumulative improvement to my quality of life is ridiculous. I keep thinking, WHY DID I PUT UP WITH THIS FOR SO LONG?

So humour me: what tiny, boring, seemingly insignificant thing have you changed/fixed/bought/reorganised in your house that has made you disproportionately happy?

I want the really mundane ones. The things nobody is putting on Grand Designs but which have genuinely made your day-to-day life better.

Basically, tell me what else I should be wandering around my house looking for 😂

Only have one type and size of tupperwear. Every lid matches every bottom

This is insane.
What if you want to freeze liquids, like soup? Liquids go in round / cylindrical containers.
They must not go in rectangular ones or the world will end.

I still have cleaning stuff under the sink, but bathroom, downstairs loo and ensuite all have their own toilet duck bottle / spray bathroom cleaner/sponges for those spontaneous cleans. All in a little woven basket so doesn't look ugly! Both showers also have their own squeegee so no excuses...

Oh, i forgot the pinnacle of my adult existence! I found a small two drawer filing cabinet that fits inside a cupboard in my living room. So now if I open a letter and i need to keep it, I can put it immediately away into the correct place. Not put in a pile and spend an hour sorting and filing away every now and again. And if one of the kids randomly needs a birth cert or I need a recent proof of address or something they are all easy to find right there and then.

I wanted to suggest that perhaps missing the point of a light hearted thread, blaming the demise of the world on someone's use of the English language and throwing a swear word in for good measure, is more likely a token reason for global decline? But I couldn't be bothered ;-)

My late OH did this with socks, black for winter, autumn soring and he bought some lighter coloured ones for summer as black socks look stupid with lighter shoes. However after numerous washes the colour of the black ones seemed to degrade over time.

I love this idea, I’m still working through the thread so apologies if this has been asked, would you mind sharing what unit you have please? I’m in similar situation & can’t figure out what would work.

I bought 500ml ones- if you search takeaway containers you should find a selection. You can get bigger sizes but these are useful for leftovers too. 750ml might be better for larger portions.

I threw away the odd sock bag and just went out and bought everyone new socks. Bliss 🤣

Not new by any means but we had the Holiday Box, it was an over-large shoe box in reality, passports, suitcase keys, power adaptors, spare cables and currency all stayed in there, as well as a large amount of odd coins from places we visited just once, if we were going away we simply pulled what we needed from The Box, no scabbling to find keys, passports etc., it even contains numerous travel tooth brushes we accumulated, unused.

The foil/cling film thing... does this cut them? I HATE dealing with cling film, trying to find the end and then trying to cut it in a straight line when you've found it.. A few tantrums have been had! Does the end thread through something?

This is what I have (only I painted it so that it fits in with my colour scheme (it's F&B Grey Smoke). The Kallax is good because it comes in blocks so you can buy as many as you need to fit your space. I have a sixer and it makes a long enough 'hallway' and doesn't block too much light.

I put up a wall mounted document holder for the endless piles of paperwork “temporarily” in the house and without a permanent home. School homework sheets, reading books, hospital appointment letters. One slot per person. No more piles of random paper hanging around.

I’ve also over invested in pan drawer dividers as a pp mentioned.

I have a tall IKEA Billy book case at right angles under the stairs as a shoe rack. Thin shelves for flip flops and kids shoes. Tall gaps at the bottom for wellies etc. And stuck a load of hooks on the facing out side of it for lunch packs, football boot bags, umbrellas.

I did one colour per school child - DS1 had black socks, DS2 had grey, DD had white.

No matching or sorting needed.

My plan is to replace all the matrasses and bedding to a single standard size. No UK 190 vs Euro 200cm fitted sheet nightmare. No double vs King saggy duvet cover.
Probably goodbye to the cute kid ones though :(

Recently got around to putting carpet in. Had been meaning to do that for years! Looking more like a proper house than a building site.

OK you sound like me. My outside light hasn't worked in years and shoes are tumbling out of my wardrobe. Making notes!

The cupboard we used was next to the sink so plumbing wasn't an issue. They had to take electricity from a wall socket which meant chasing a cable from the socket into the plaster above the work surface, and going down behind a row of cupboards. We wanted the dishwasher to be integrated, so had to buy a slim one which cost more than a freestanding one. They reused the existing cupboard door and made it hinge at the bottom instead of the side.
I can't remember how much it cost. More than £500, less than £1k. Took a day for them to do.

Old-fashioned drying rack/maiden on my upstairs landing ceiling. It's an old house and v high ceilings, so you barely notice it. It is LIFE-CHANGING.
Internal shelves in cupboards, so you can stack plates etc in smaller piles and not have to take off 15 little plates when you want to get out a big one like we used to. Also life-changing.
One of those tall narrow slide-out cupboards for bottles of oil, soy sauce etc, in a gap between two corners that was previously dead space.
Motion-activated lights on the corner of the stairs and in the bathroom, so you don't fall up or down the stairs in the dark and can stumble to the bathroom in the night and have just enough light, rather than waking yourself and everyone up with the bathroom big light and the attached extractor fan. (although getting a separate fan is on the to-do list).

Said to-do list is many times longer than the 'done' list, sadly, but we're working on it...

In the end no, the cupboard pulled out. But we maybe got lucky on that. We have had expense with extra plumbing bits and new hinges for the cupboard door fronts as that's needed adjusting. I'm lucky my DH is fairly handy. He has been cussing me a bit in the process lol but no regrets!

I feel you! Which is why I am only able to do this now while kids at school and I am off work. Haven't had energy or headspace to even attempt this for years!

Ooh yes, I've just remembered! It was pps mention of motion-activated lights that did it...

This is a very old house with a downstairs bathroom and hardly any power sockets. I was tripping over the single, annoyingly placed step on the way to the bathroom every night. Then I plugged a nightlight into the shaver socket in the bathroom (I'm a woman, live alone and no need for the shaver) and I just leave it on all the time. It's been there six years and not failed yet (the bathroom is dark, no external windows but I don't always want to put on The Big Light).

No, small amount of liquid go in square tubs and very large amounts go in 2 or 4 pint milk jugs (labelled , obviously) which stand up nicely in the chest freezer.

All Tupperware have the same lids whatever the depth so they can hold 1, 2 or 4 portions.

Everything in the freezer is labelled with contents and the monthly it was put in.
