What small household fixes have made everyday life noticeably easier?

I’m between jobs at the moment and have decided to use some of the time to basically snag my own house.

I’m going through every room and making a note of all the little things that have mildly irritated me for YEARS, but which I’ve somehow just accepted as part of life. You know the sort of thing - not actual problems, just things you regularly curse under your breath and then continue living with for another five years.

So far I have:

1. Ruthlessly slimmed down the kitchen cupboards so I could lose one cupboard and fit a tumble dryer. Every winter I normally spend approximately 46% of my waking hours hanging damp clothes around the house and rotating them like prize livestock, so I’m disproportionately excited about this.

2. Reorganised the Tupperware so every container now lives WITH ITS OWN LID. No more rummaging through 17 lids while slowly losing the will to live.

3. Thrown out about 12 random, ancient, slightly raggedy towels that had been granted permanent residency in the airing cupboard. It now has SPACE. Things are FOLDED.

4. Replaced the sieve that hasn’t had a handle since approximately 2020. Why did I just... live like that?

5. Put bigger shoe storage by the door, so we no longer have the traditional hallway shoe landslide.

6. Rewired a switch so it finally works the way you instinctively expect it to work rather than requiring a tiny moment of irritation every single time.

Honestly, none of this is exactly world peace, but the cumulative improvement to my quality of life is ridiculous. I keep thinking, WHY DID I PUT UP WITH THIS FOR SO LONG?

So humour me: what tiny, boring, seemingly insignificant thing have you changed/fixed/bought/reorganised in your house that has made you disproportionately happy?

I want the really mundane ones. The things nobody is putting on Grand Designs but which have genuinely made your day-to-day life better.

Basically, tell me what else I should be wandering around my house looking for 😂

Changed the door locks to split spindle so that I no longer have to worry that one of us has gone out and left a door completely unlocked. (You need a key safe too, otherwise you can lock yourself out ).

Huge parcel box in the front garden.

I put the linen changes for each bed in a pillowcase under that bed in a box, together with the towels for that person (colour coded). Now my laundry cupboard is practically empty and just has occasional stuff in it, like towels for guests. No more rooting around in there when I need to change the bed or towels, since they're already to hand.

I'm still working at this, but the biggest tip someone gave me was... have stuff to hand where you're going to use it, as much as possible.

I put up a pulley above my tumble dryer for the things that can't be tumbled. I now never have to trip over an airing rack. It's joyful.

Same here - one day it occurred to me that I only use my toaster once a week, and my slow cooker maybe twice a week in winter only. So I put them away in cupboards, also my kitchen scales. It made my whole kitchen look so much tidier! (But I did have the cupboard space to be able to do this and I know not everyone has).

I’m a huge fan of clear surfaces so have invested in lots of good storage some already mentioned here but my favourites:

Under stairs pull out drawers & cupboard - best money we’ve spent in the house everyone else has their own drawer to just chuck stuff in and I have a lovely shoe rack & coat cupboard and a clear hallway.

kitchen cupboard storage solutions: a double spice rack on the inside of a tall kitchen cupboard with2 deep shelves for larger bits like stockpots, sea salt, peppercorns etc.

Proper drawer dividers for two deep drawers otherwise they are just a jumble of stuff,
vertical dividers for baking trays so you don’t have to empty the whole cupboard just to get the one you want;
pan lid racks fixed to this inside on of tue pan cupboard door
shelf stacking steps so you can see all the tins at the back
under sink cleaning caddy that both sorts and I take around the house to clean.

washing basket with dividers so dirty washing is already sorted by everyone

handy vac upstairs for quick runaround when I can’t be bothered to drag the hoover out.

buying a stack of decent hangers and chucking all the old shitty ones away and all having enough for all our clothes

loving some of the suggestions on here - all men having the same socks is just genius and I’ll be doing a hairdryer holder.

My top 2:

I hate sorting/putting away laundry. Now DC are older, I have bought 8 large storage baskets and used a label maker to dedicate 2 to each family member.

Box 1 is on the shelf in the utility. All clean clothes laundry goes straight into that person's box (they iron/put away as required). Box 2 is for their bed linen and they take upstairs and put in their ottoman beds.

All my worktops are always clear apart from a candle/fruit bowl/flowers. Looks nice but more importantly makes me feel calm and is easy to clean.

Bought two sets of tiered bamboo stacking shelves to go inside the larder so that things at the back are higher than things at the front. Can see everything instantly - jars on one side and cans on the other.

Bought this from amazon. It's meant to be wall mounted but I have it sat flat in a drawer and it is a JOY

Dehumidifier air purifier. Washing dries super fast and much less dust. Win win 🙌🏻

How can you tell? I hate the idea of AI too, but can’t even tell the difference.

I normally write in paras with bullet points etc.

Why do you think it’s AI? Seems like well- organised information to me.

Is this really where we’re at now - we see something done well and assume it’s artificial intelligence!🙄

I agree it’s good to replace grotty towels but hang on to them (garage, loft, shed) for defrosting the freezer or plumbing disasters - or pets, of course. I’ve been glad of the frayed old towels I keep on many occasions!

Glasses in each car and in the room with tv (never need to find glasses)

Spare sets of all bedding (so can change without waiting for washing to be done)
front door key on each set of car keys &front door key on dog lead.
apple air tag on each set car keys
key lock box on side of house just in case
lamps downstairs on one smart plug (switch all on/off at once from phone)

I had cupboards built above the doors going all along my hall. They are unobtrusive, as they blend in with the panelling and it is all colourwashed, and they hold loads. In my case, my vast dvd collection.
They are also supported by long thin cupboards, similar to those tall cd shelves, only with doors, useful for small items.
Similarly, I have a long wide shelf above the doors on the landing, supported in the same way, only in this case it is where all my decorative hatboxes sit, full of hats, gloves, etc.

Having the beginnings of a utility room has been a game changer, as I now have cupboards full of labelled ice cream tubs containing all the string, tape, wire, screws, screwdrivers, hooks, glue, candles, first aid stuff etc that would normally have been rattling around in different places in the rest of the house.

A wicker trunk by the radiator in the bathroom for the towels, with a wicker basket on top for the hand towels, all rolled. (Inadequate shallow airing cupboard, which might as well not exist)
Also, large vintage wooden filing cabinet in the inner landing, for bedding.

A cupboard in the kitchen for all the various recycling bins. All hidden away, thank goodness.

Oh my hairdryer holder is hands down the best solution thing I recently found and it came with effective sticky pads to put on the wall. Was up, right by the mirror, in moments!

Hair dryer, hot brush and straighteners permanently plugged into an extension under the dressing table and the extension is switched off at the wall plug after use (nicely settling my fire risk ocd).
No more tangled cables, no more where to put this red hot straightener down issues. Love it.

I live in chaos but I am such a fan or organised people, I am in awe of them. Love threads like this one and my favourite reading is old books from the 1930s - entitled something like 'A plan of work for a small household that either doesn’t have servants or is in-between servants'.

Honestly I have wanted a tumble dryer for years but we are already short on kitchen space and every time I mentioned it DH said it wasn't possible plus too expensive to run, blah blah...
With winter looming, this time I just decided that wasn't an acceptable answer. There was one single cupboard unit next to the washing machine and in the end it was easy just to pull out. Plumbing and electrics have been more of a challenge though. I just couldn't face another winter of banisters and radiators filled, and me constantly turning items like they were cooking, just to try and speed up drying time. Kill me now!

I burnt myself this week running hot water through it and it was the final straw! Go treat yourself!

I have a drying frame (ordinary, not heated) on wheels. If it's wet and I'm drying washing inside I can have it out in the sunniest part of the house. Overnight or when I'm at work especially. But if we are all home and the washing isn't fully dry, or someone calls in, r im just sick of looking at it, I can fold down the racks on one side and roll it away into the (windowless, so useless for drying) tiny utility room.

I'm here for the tips!

My house is full of these little things that irritate me (this may include the kids 🤪), but sorting them out involves bigger jobs, like decluttering & rearranging whole rooms which I don't have the time or energy to tackle... yet I waste time & energy finding work arounds for these minor annoyances! 🙈
