What small household fixes have made everyday life noticeably easier?

I’m between jobs at the moment and have decided to use some of the time to basically snag my own house.

I’m going through every room and making a note of all the little things that have mildly irritated me for YEARS, but which I’ve somehow just accepted as part of life. You know the sort of thing - not actual problems, just things you regularly curse under your breath and then continue living with for another five years.

So far I have:

1. Ruthlessly slimmed down the kitchen cupboards so I could lose one cupboard and fit a tumble dryer. Every winter I normally spend approximately 46% of my waking hours hanging damp clothes around the house and rotating them like prize livestock, so I’m disproportionately excited about this.

2. Reorganised the Tupperware so every container now lives WITH ITS OWN LID. No more rummaging through 17 lids while slowly losing the will to live.

3. Thrown out about 12 random, ancient, slightly raggedy towels that had been granted permanent residency in the airing cupboard. It now has SPACE. Things are FOLDED.

4. Replaced the sieve that hasn’t had a handle since approximately 2020. Why did I just... live like that?

5. Put bigger shoe storage by the door, so we no longer have the traditional hallway shoe landslide.

6. Rewired a switch so it finally works the way you instinctively expect it to work rather than requiring a tiny moment of irritation every single time.

Honestly, none of this is exactly world peace, but the cumulative improvement to my quality of life is ridiculous. I keep thinking, WHY DID I PUT UP WITH THIS FOR SO LONG?

So humour me: what tiny, boring, seemingly insignificant thing have you changed/fixed/bought/reorganised in your house that has made you disproportionately happy?

I want the really mundane ones. The things nobody is putting on Grand Designs but which have genuinely made your day-to-day life better.

Basically, tell me what else I should be wandering around my house looking for 😂

You nailed it with #1 to be honest. Tumble dryer is a game changer (sorry environment, our weather is not suitable for air drying).

Mine was building a utility room. Required a lot of building work and walls to move but god it’s worth it. All the school bags and sports stuff has pegs they hang on in the utility, laundry can live in dirty and clean baskets till i’m ready to deal with it and i can shut the door and not think about it any more.

Life changing.

I second the cat water fountain. The cats love it.

There's one thing I need to re-instate since having our kitchen decorated. Putting hooks on the wall next to cooker for colander, wok, and seive. So much smoother to grab things from a hook than to root through drawers and cupboards.

The classic of storing bed sets, including sheets each in their own pillowcase.

Clothing system - choose outfit by starting from left hand side of the wardrobe until you find what you want to wear, put clothes away on the right hand side. The clothes you don't like anymore eventually end up on the left hand side and it's easier to let go if them.

I ordered iron-on labels for "king" and "double" bedding so they're easy to sort when they've been washed and get to the right room.

I found space in a drawer for a wrapping station. Wrapping paper, scissors, stacks of generic birthday cards, tape, string, gift bags ( usually re-used). Depends on ages of kids but mine are at the age where there are constant parties so it genuinely saves time to have all this sorted in advance.

This thread is incredible. The tupperware same size one and the sock one has blown my mind.

I wish I had some tips. My house is utter chaos.

Soap bags for the shower rather than endless bottles of shower gel (in our house, anyway) and those puffs that go out of shape so quickly!

This is a great idea. I have 2 boys who will soon be in the same sock-size as dad. At that point i will definitely take this tip, burn all the other socks and just start a massive communal sock method.

I live in a house with no hallway (very old cottage where the front door opens into the living room) so I created a hallway by putting a Kallax unit down one side. Now everyone coming in is funnelled down onto my dirt catcher mat (I have tiled floors fortunately) and the Kallax has baskets for things like boots, dog equipment, head torches etc so it's easy to find what you need before you set out for a walk.

It also helps keep the living room clean and prevents anyone coming to the front door from being able to see right into the living room (I don't know why this bothers me because I live alone so if I'm answering the door I'm not lying on the sofa in my knickers, but at least it means my bowl of crisps isn't visible).

I redid the sealant in my wet room - was an easy job - first time I have attempted it but the mouldy sealant had been haunting and shaming me for years. Looks magnificent.

Thew out all the Tupperware boxes that had accumulated - which were takeaway boxes that my DH would just throw in the drawer - must have been about 30.

Defrosted and cleaned out my freezer

Cupboard above the sink is a drying rack

stair basket - anything to go up goes in that and all taken up in one swoop and visa versa

coverless duvet - with 5 children this is game changer

upstairs hoover and a downstairs hoover - not cheap but worth it

Air dryer sheets in the cushion covers- smells Devine

This is life changing: a small piece of plastic that keeps all my chargers together at the side of my bed: watch, phone and ipad. I don't have to fumble about for them, they're just THERE!

I did this over the Christmas holiday last year and am now due to do again. Some of my best were:

• Buying a knife sharpening block and taking the time to sharpen every knife in my kitchen. Game changer every time I cut something. How did I not know the difference it makes??
• Untangled a HUGE box of cables for various devices - phones chargers, laptop chargers, etc., etc., labelled them all and stored them in separate boxes, which all stack neatly inside the big box. That took most of an afternoon but is such a relief.
• Bought more of the things that always run out: extra sellotape, pens, kitchen towel, whatever. I mostly have space for it and it just makes life a touch easier.
• Created a cupboard space for spare greetings cards, gift bags, ribbons, etc. Bought a couple of rolls of generic wrapping paper (gold) and have started to stash small generic gifts in there when I find them (like a mini Jo Malone candle). Now I rarely need to dash to the shops for a card I've forgotten or whatever.

There was a lot more that I can't recall now. This is a great thread.

I also have my hairdryer and straighteners plugged in and looped over a hook next to a mirror and a stool so it's really easy to just switch them on and use them. Previously they were inside the stool (it has storage) and it meant it was too much of a PITA to ever use them, now it's easy.

I also buy cards in advance, loads of them, and stamps so I'm ready for birthdays.

I've just bought several sympathy cards as somebody is bound to die soon (sorry! but loads of old people in my family!)

I love this, but I would 100% buy the wrong size. What is mid-sized? I get so confused with sizes in litres.

I love doing this when my husband deploys, keeps me busy and always feels so good, but I’m afraid to say the clutter soon builds up again 🤣

I generally tend to focus on decluttering and organisation; kitchen, clothes, shoes, kids’ rooms. Shredding old documents. Detangling them wire box.

Last time (and the most permanent fix!) I bought labelled storage boxes for our airing cupboard to more properly sort bedding, blankets etc. Oh and Christmas storage, got it all properly boxed up and labelled.

I bought loads of those little plastic trays to store things in bathroom cupboard and bedrooms, things like make up, jewellery etc.

I moved my food processor and laundry supplies into cupboards and shelves I could access without having to move 20 other things first. Now I just reach directly for them. Like you I have no idea why I put up with it for so many years.

I also got a rack like this for all my baking sheets and it is inordinately pleasing.

Sew ribbon on the each corner of the duvet and on the inside corner of the duvet cover. Tie the corners while the cover is inside out and it stays in place. My arms aren’t long enough to change a super king on my own. I’m pathetically proud of this hack which I thought of myself. Duvet and covers should come with this as standard.

I've given up on Tupperware completely and just use the ziplock freezer bags. I know they are less environmentally friendly but they are more friendly for my mind so

also keeping a whole bed set in the pillowcase

Oh yes another that adds hooks everywhere. I have those ones used for Christmas lights inside a cupboard to hang up necklaces, I have a hook drilled into the side of my vanity for my straightener and hair dryer.

I put all our flour in jars to stop weevils.

Also found some amazing garden storage boxes that are actually weather proof so we don’t have to lug our sofa cushions in and out of the garage.
