I'm sick of duvets

What the title says. I have these big double duvets that most of the family uses and a few singles. It's hard to maintain these, keep them in duvet covers, change the covers, getting a good matching cover, etc. Often they will go without a cover for days and be used just like that. I'm finally ready to replace them.

I'm thinking I want to do away with them entirely. what are my options? Can I just do 5 single duvets for everyone? Or comforters, or quilts and blankets? What does everyone do?

Why do the duvets not have covers on them for days? Just make sure you have enough duvet covers for them and change them once a week. You need the right sized duvet for the bed, a single duvet in a double bed doesn’t sound very comfortable.

If you go down the blanket route, you will need lots of blankets and sounds like so much washing to me. One duvet cover versus a few blankets.

We love quilts, but also have duvets as they are not warm enough alone in the winter.
Edited to say we get ours from Pottery Barn, they are pricey but we have one that’s 15 years old and still great.

Gently its not Hard its about routine.

Strip the bed and put the fresh bedding on straight away is the best way to manage it.

This means you will need minimum of 2 sets per bed.

There are 5 of us I have 8 duvets in the house. 4 winter 4 summer together. On a Sunday I do my bed, I get the kids to help me strip and put it back on. On a Wed we do their beds, again strip and fresh straight back on.

We have 3 sets each. 1 in wash, 1 on bed, 1 spare.

TBH last several weeks we have just been sleeping under blankets or the duvet covers.

I'm a complete convert to coverless duvets and in the process of switching all ours over. Makes changing the beds a lot less hassle!

I use a coverless duvet. It’s great. And I can always cover it if I want a change. Otherwise just use a top sheet and blankets with a decorative quilt over it? But of a faff if you like making your bed every day though.

They are big and a huge faff and I'm the only one that does them, meaning if I don't get around to doing it they just don't get done. 😕

I agree, 5 singles was my husbands suggestion🙄

What tog duvet would be good from spring through autumn? I was thinking I could get a moderate tog duvet and add a nice quilted bedspread on the top.

How do you get then washed and dry again in a day during winter?

What is a coverless duvet and where do you get these?

Doubles are pretty easy, they're not huge. How old are the children why can't they strip and remake their beds? DS is 7 he struggles to put new sheets on but he can strip his and put it in the washing machine.
We have a super king and that is a bit unwieldy but still doable

Im another who doesn't really see the problem.

Take off duvet cover. Put on new one. What's the matching about? I just have two of the same for each bed (one to wear, one to wash). But the world won't end if they dont match.

If the duvet has been used without a cover then take it to the launderette, no need to get rid of it. If you do decide to get rid, you can usually give good clean duvets away on Freecycle/Olio.

If you want to do something different then yes of course you can have single duvets if that's what you want. You might prefer coverless duvets.

(I grew up with sheets & blankets - duvets are a breeze!)

I use coverless duvets and dry them in the tumble drier in the winter. They’re so easy and also more hygienic as they get washed far more frequently. I wouldn’t go back to traditional duvets and covers.

You could do single duvets for everybody. I don’t understand why it’s such an ordeal though. In my house everyone has two sets of bedding. One goes off and the other goes on. The people whose bed it is change the bedding. All extra duvet covers and pillowcases are thrown away.

Crikey. Our bed has an emperor duvet. It's huge. And I change our bed every 6 or 7days. We only use white sheets and our bed has two sets.

DC have doubles too and I change those weekly.

I’m 5ft 7 and strong with long arms but changing the covers on the 3KS duvets is my worst job
Thinking about it I could cut a slit in the side seam at the top of the cover and grip the duvet and just shake the cover down
I could also replace the buttons along the bottom with a couple of bits of Velcro - must do it

Cover less duvets are great. They magically dry very quickly. You will be surprised.

I’m not sure why you are finding it hard. We have a super king, a king and 3 singles- we have 2 sets for each. If you had 2 doubles 2 singles, you could get away with 3 double duvet sets and 3 single duvet sets, if you had a good washing routine, and didn’t need them to match the room. But like previous people have said- put fresh one on as soon as you strip it.
if you are struggling to put the duvet cover on, then look up the rolling method on YouTube- it is doable on your own.
I personally would have 2 singles on my bed because DH nicks the covers often, so one of the single is my extra so I don’t freeze at night!
other options are cover less duvets (quilt or comforter) but then you’ll need a top sheet (I hate top sheets) or you’ll be washing it constantly.
I'm not sure why you struggle to match sets (if you must), surely if you’ve stripped a matching set off the bed, then that gets washed together and put in the cupboard together?
if your using your duvet without a cover, they’ll need washing- the cover is to prevent them needing washing all the time.

Anyone have a superking cover less duvet? If so does it fit in a normal household washing machine or do you have to take it to a laundrette?

2 sets of bedding per bed and makes sure all can go in the same wash ie not light sheets and dark duvet! Do whole sets at a time and family members over about 6/7 years old strip their own bed with assistance if needed, might take longer at first than doing it yourself but within months they can do it solo. Stick to single duvets for kids up to 12 or so as they are easier to deal with and as soon as they physically can, then put them back on as well, remake the bed with the spare set almost straight away then it’s done. Asda in particular has very reasonably priced sets if you need more, Dunelm does too but more expensive

Washing duvet covers is a faff so I use sheets under them and only wash covers once every 6 weeks or so. Sheets are washed weekly. They high quality cotton.

I have picked same colours for pillow covers, fitted and flat sheet for all the beds (a pebble off white colour from Zara Home), that go well with duvet covers in various prints. I have gingham, stripes and a flower print one for me that I bought from Designers Guild ages ago.

My coverless duvet dries really quickly even indoors in winter. Takes about an hour on the heated airer but even if I just hang it over a door it’s done in a couple of hours

I have a sheet between me and the duvet, so whilst I wash the sheet every week, the duvet cover doesn’t need washing anything life as often, as it doesn’t come into contact with me.

A coverless duvet is just a quilt with a fancy rebranded name.

..no....I think I do not like the concept but im still quite sleepy under my 10 tog, green cotton waffle duvet cover ...or is it a downie?

We use single duvets. It's very common in the Netherlands, Germany, and Scandinavia. It's so much more flexible; you can use different togs, they fit in the washing machine and dryer, one of you can decamp to the sofa or spare room, and no fighting about stealing the covers. You can wrap yourself up in a cocoon or creep under your partner's depending on how the mood takes you. 😉
We use 200gr and 300gr weights with extra throws in the winter, or they can be used together in one cover, but I find that too warm.

We use sheets under the duvets and throws on top so no changing duvet covers.

DH and I had single duvets for years as prefer different togs and he used to steal the king size one.
