I'm sick of duvets

What the title says. I have these big double duvets that most of the family uses and a few singles. It's hard to maintain these, keep them in duvet covers, change the covers, getting a good matching cover, etc. Often they will go without a cover for days and be used just like that. I'm finally ready to replace them.

I'm thinking I want to do away with them entirely. what are my options? Can I just do 5 single duvets for everyone? Or comforters, or quilts and blankets? What does everyone do?

Coverless duvets sounds a good idea but the reality is that they are synthetic fillings in a synthetic cover. I like a wool duvet and cotton covers, feels so much nicer. Wool duvets don't shift about OP.

Like others, we have quilts. Rather than having them on top we use them under the duvet in winter and just wash them, rather than having to change the duvet and cover each time. In summer we just box up the duvet.

How is a quilt different from a duvet? Unless you mean a patchwork quilt, in which case why would you put them against your skin and wash them often at risk of the stitching coming undone and the colour running?

Luckylu123 · 06/09/2026 06:59

Just use a top sheet then you hardly ever need to wash the duvet cover

Plod123 · 06/09/2026 08:20

Another vote for coverless it’s a life saver, I wash them loads more and it’s one wash rather than one for duvet/one for cover. You can buy them most places Dunelm, John Lewis, Asda, Amazon I found them great for my young children during potty training and accidents just such less hassle.

Me and my husband have two single duvets on a super king bed and it has been an absolute game changer in terms of comfort. Now I can do the peri menopausal legs in and out jiggery pokery and he can stay sausage roll all night. No reason not to have a single duvet on a double bed.

Also, at 13 my daughter does her own. At 10 my son still finds it challenging but I always make him help. And when we had a massive duvet my husband always did it because he's tall. Changing the sheets is a weekend, family activity.. Not something mum does on her own.

Thesummer · 06/09/2026 09:15

I'm confused. Why is this so hard?

Take off duvet cover, pillow cases and sheet in the morning. Put in wash. Tumble dry. Put back on bed in the evening. If you don't have a drier then put another set on while the wet one dries. Yes it's annoying doing the duvet cover but doesn't take that long?

You don't have to do all the bedding in one go - usually do the kids one day and ours another day. Less of a big task that way. It's not strictly done every week, probably more like every 7-10 days, but we are still alive.

Greypanda86 · 06/09/2026 09:19

This post has enlightened me I never knew this was an issue I also didn’t know a duvet was different to a quilt I thought it was a different word for the same thing. There’s 4 of us we all have a duvet I change the bedding once a week on all beds take off the bottom sheet the duvet cover and the pillowcases and put a clean set on it’s pretty straightforward

Wexone · 06/09/2026 09:47

Sweet lord such a faff about a normal thing. super king bed here all sheets are white. I have labelled with black marker what is top of the duvet turn the cover inside out grab corners then grab the corners of duvet and swing the cover over so it's right side out. then throw on bed fasten and strauhyen. don't like coverless duvets. looked them and majority are polyester. I need proper cotton sheets. duvet was veey expensive super king sheets in proper cotton are not cheap but they are worth it for a good night's sleep. also last longer I can't deal with ploy lend shite
if you have kids husband etc make sure they are involved in changing sheets

DH and I run hot,in winter heating is on 18c. I went over to using microfiber bedding (recommended by Nick littlehays Sleep Expert) I found it was so difficult to successfully iron king size bedding, and have found it as comfortable and cool as cotton.

Agree that microfibre is cooler, but they feel too light. I’m using percale which has more weight.
We run very hot, particularly in summer, where we often sleep without covers. In the winter we’ve used a 4.5 tog for as long as I can remember. But we have an Emma mattress which is very warm in itself.
I sleep better in a cool room and always have a casement window open (we’ve woken up to snow inside before now) as the brain operates much better not getting too hot, allowing me to hit the ground running in the morning.

LoafofSellotape · 06/09/2026 10:12

What's the difference between a quilt and a duvet? They're the same thing in this house.

We have 2 single duvets on our super king bed and a big bedspread over the top so it looks all neat and tidy during the day.

WifeOfBaths · 06/09/2026 10:13

We all have single duvets. So much easier to change. I hate doubles.

Mydoglovescheese · 05/09/2026 08:56

I use coverless duvets and dry them in the tumble drier in the winter. They’re so easy and also more hygienic as they get washed far more frequently. I wouldn’t go back to traditional duvets and covers.

Do they fit in the washing machine okay if they’re bigger than a single?🤔

I just washed a high tog single duvet (the covered kind) and had trouble enough getting that in the washing machine (a 10kg machine).

Chalatte · 05/09/2026 08:51

They are big and a huge faff and I'm the only one that does them, meaning if I don't get around to doing it they just don't get done. 😕

I agree, 5 singles was my husbands suggestion🙄

What tog duvet would be good from spring through autumn? I was thinking I could get a moderate tog duvet and add a nice quilted bedspread on the top.

5 singles would be ideal. 2 single duvets on a double bed is brilliant, especially if one of you overheats under a duvet. I have a summer one all year round, DH has a big thick one.

We have 2 sets for each one. Strip bed, put on new covers (takes 12 minutes, i timed it) then put used ones on to wash. It is all about routine.

Coverless duvets? how does that work? you have to wash the whole thing? how do you dry it in time for bed?

MummyWillow1 · 06/09/2026 10:28

Is everyone else in the house under 5? If not, you have 2 sets of covers per bed, swap them over on wash day. Everyone is responsible for their own bedding.

These kind of thing are what we use. We used to put them on the spare room's beds as a dust proof layer but have rethought that as it is easier to wash the one from every room each week than to take all the duvet covers off and put them back on. https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/4419649328/hand-block-printed-cotton-quilt?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_uk_en_gb_a-home_and_living&utm_custom1=k_CjwKCAjwnvTUBhBoEiwAZNDxZ2dNsqZdoN20ZhHM9fE6NO600jszBgtr8tNUEivcIrdVFtE2WW_WvRoCiXMQAvD_BwE_k&utm_content=go_21822299650_169452881736_717564633803_pla-303628061699_c__4419649328engb_5346717351&utm_custom2=21822299650&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21822299650&gbraid=0AAAAADutTMezNcABuTjSXTABu8noMpZTT&gclid=CjwKCAjwnvTUBhBoEiwAZNDxZ2dNsqZdoN20ZhHM9fE6NO600jszBgtr8tNUEivcIrdVFtE2WW_WvRoCiXMQAvD_BwE

But it doesn’t feel so comfortable. I am someone who moves around in my sleep and I hate feeling ‘ tucked in’. My first step when staying anywhere else is to untuck the bedding. Duvets are not meant to be used tucked in.

ItsABatFaceThing · 06/09/2026 15:35

My bed is really important to me. We have pure silk duvet in the summer and a pure wool one in the winter. I only use pure linen bedding as it’s nice and soft and always looks nice and then a silk throw over the top

the thought of sleeping under a duvet without a cover seems grim to me

Gobbledegoo · 06/09/2026 15:44

I use a top sheet on the bed before as duvet doesn't come off the bed either. All double beds with King size duvets and king top sheet. I really hate double top sheets and duvets. When we had DC at home they had double duvets. Singles are a really nuisance and the sleeping person gets cold as they are not big enoough.

CoastalCalm · 06/09/2026 15:58

Switched to coverless a few years ago and love them - I was previously having to replace duvets regularly but now just a short wash and drape over bannister and it’s dry to use same day

Iloveeverycat · 06/09/2026 16:05

I take mine off in the morning wash and dry it then put it back on in the evening. What's hard about that.

clamshell24 · 06/09/2026 16:53

Anyone old enough for a double duvet is old enough to change it. And once a fortnight is plenty.

Maisey1991 · 06/09/2026 17:08

Oh this post is obviously not from the uk where we all have duvet year round.
where do you buy covers? Do they not come in sets with matching pillow cases?
over here we just wash the duvet covers once every 1-2 weeks with the bottom sheet and pillow cases unless dirty inbetween.
if your household is old enough they need to be responsible for taking off the covers for you to clean and putting them back on once washed

Why were you replacing duvets regularly? Were you not using covers before? How is washing a coverless duvet and draping it over the bannister better than washing a cover and draping it over the bannister?
