Is there some trick I’m missing with this stupid food caddy??

The council have been pressuring everyone to get a food bin, so I got one (at least it was free! Well not free, my expensive council tax is paying for it 🙄).
got the little grey bin under the sink. How on earth do you stop the silky bin bags from slipping down every time you put food in it? Driving me crazy!!

So all the suggestions seem to be buy larger bags or buy another different plastic caddy.
Im not sure any of this is actually helping the environment.

How lovely for those of you who just pop outside and put your food waste in the dedicated bin .
We live in an upstairs flat and at 75 am getting more and more reluctant( though I know it's good for me ) to be nipping up and downstairs with either the food caddy or a compostable bag full of coffee grounds ,chicken bones and fish skin trailing a lingering odour as I go .

Well exactly and its not just an age thing, the privilege reeks from these types of discussions not just on this thread, things like 'chest freezer' 'in the garage', also we tried a caddy to hang on the door under the sink, you cant then shut the door because of the sink and cant hang things on the outside of the door because of the way the doors shut

Our kitchen is small enough I dont want more clutter in it, certainly not waste food.

I agree, this one is brilliant. Definitely get yourself one & end the frustration!

Mine haven’t even emptied my bin yet. It’s now a plastic box full of liquid and lumps with scraps of biodegradable bag floating in the murky depths. I have left it exactly where they told me!

I give up.

Our council gave out the food caddies years ago and we’re lucky that they also provide the green waste bags to go in them. I hated the smelly caddy and when the handle broke chucked it. So now I just put food waste straight into the green bag, tie it up and into our garden/food waste bin outside. That recently started getting emptied every week by the bin men - great in summer as there’s always garden waste.

Get a couple of labradors

I’ve got a nice silver brabantia mini bin on my work surface with the bags in and then I put the full and sealed bags straight into our outdoor waste caddy.

I'm in Brighton and we got these in February. I can't ys3 them they smell so bad it makes me want to vomit. Compost heap for me.

Rubber band here. I wish we had a garden and could compost at home, but not an option. Am very glad to have collected at last!!

I really really want to follow this suggestion but have just bought the Joseph Joseph bin from John lewis instead (on special offer too). Seems to be a lot if people looking at it on the JL website...

My caddy came from Lakeland but I buy paper liners on Amazon as my council doesn’t let me use compostable ones.

Maybe you need bigger bin liners? I always twist a little bit of the edge of any bin liner, after I have put it in the bin, as if I am going to tie a knot, and then just tuck it underneath the edge of the liner. That is how you stop bin liner from slipping and yet they are still easy to pull out even with a heavy load.

i’ve had one of these council caddies for about 25 years. It’s a good system. The council turns the food waste into compost and puts on the roses in the parks. Please persist. It is so much better than burying it in the ground.

My council has been a bit more advanced. We have the small inside caddy and the outside caddy to put out on bin days. They met the legal deadline for introducing this and we get food collection every week! Our leaflet said you can use any type of plastic bag if you run out of the council ones. The standard ones are ok but do tend to go to holes easily. The trick is to empty the inside one before the point it gets hot and sweaty!

Unless you’ve got your own compost bin, I always suspect people who proudly celebrate their lack of food waste mustn’t cook from scratch very often. My Dad has no food waste either, but it’s because there’s not much waste when your evening meal is fish fingers and chips from the freezer.

We produce quite a lot because we have picky children and who don’t always eat everything they’re given, but even if I didn’t, I’d have veg peeling and strawberry tops and outer leaves from lettuce and cabbage etc.

Perhaps I should buy a couple of rabbits.

Zero food waste here. It gets composted. I did find out that the cats won't touch soya milk.

I cook most things from scratch.

Buy bigger food bags and then use the excess hanging over to tie a knot.
