Is there some trick I’m missing with this stupid food caddy??

The council have been pressuring everyone to get a food bin, so I got one (at least it was free! Well not free, my expensive council tax is paying for it 🙄).
got the little grey bin under the sink. How on earth do you stop the silky bin bags from slipping down every time you put food in it? Driving me crazy!!

It's a right faff. I used them for a while but they're more trouble than they are worth. I've just ended up putting all my rubbish in one bag and chucking it into the sea.

Bahaha.

HotHotter · 27/06/2026 23:43

We use the Sainsbury's 10 litre compostable bags for our indoor caddy.
If you pull it right down to the bottom on the outside it works perfectly and never slips.
We keep it open under the sink except in the very hot weather when we put the lid on.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 27/06/2026 23:44

Atleast you have one, i've applied twice and been denied, i'm not authorised to have one!

pinefalls · 27/06/2026 23:44

Just make sure you’ve got good quality food waste bags that properly fit the bin. Do not buy Ocado’s, they’re rubbish, too small.

OhMyGoodieAunts · 27/06/2026 23:45

On the little brown bin, unhook the lid. Then put the caddy liner on so it’s covering the whole bin and folded over each of the four sides. Then rehook the lid on. You’ll have to unhook the lid again each time you want to change the liner but that’s better than food going down the gap

Squidgoals · 27/06/2026 23:55

The liners from Mark’s and Spencer have big handles on them that make securing them in the bin way easier, and tying them up way easier too.

tapdancingmum · 28/06/2026 00:31

I use the co-op bags as DH picks them up from the chap at work who shops in there every day and gets a new compostable bag every day. They are big enough to fold over the top of the kitchen caddy and leave enough room to tie them up to put them in the kerbside bin.
I have just looked up what we can use to line our bins with and was surprised by the list. I always assumed we couldn't use normal carrier bags but we can.

I'm not a fan, they stink after a couple of days in this heat and if outside then you have maggots.

fiestatime1 · 28/06/2026 01:16

I had to get a different caddy as the cat was “ooh new food puzzle, thanks!” and cracked it within 15 minutes
got one that looks nice and sits on the side, the cat hasn’t yet figured it out

There’s new national regulations making food waste recycling mandatory from this year.

They’ve been rolling it out over the last few months in my council and neighbouring councils, but not everyone in the area has received the food bins yet.

I mean, they can provide the bin but they can't make me use it.

Arlanymor · 27/06/2026 22:36

Put the handles over the sides and secure with an elastic band. We’ve been doing this in Wales forever, your council sound behind the times if they are only making you recycle food waste now.

Edited

We don't even have ours yet!

Has it only recently become mandatory to recycle food waste in your local authority area? We have been recycling food waste for 20-25 years.

I’m in Birmingham, I think they are trialling them in some suburbs here, but not where I am. They’ve not collected any recycling (a wheely bin with glass, plastic, tin and paper) since March last year 🙄. I take my recycling to the tip but I think most people just chuck it in the black bin.

Guttingly the Coop has stopped doing the compostable bags in lots of their shops Sad There is one near me that still does them - at 10p a bag they are cheaper than the ones you buy on a roll (and one of the assistants knows I love them and always flings in some extras!).

They can't make you, but it makes a huge difference to the volume and smell of the big non-recyclables wheeliebin if it contains no food waste or other things that can be dealt with without landfill, and as councils are gradually moving towards only collecting non-recyclables every 3 weeks, people who aren't in the habit of separating food waste etc will have more difficulty with that change than thise who are (unless you are like the mumsnetter I remember from the last time we discussed this topic, who never has any food waste because she only ever eats at restaurants or fully prepared ready-meals such that the only waste from a meal is the plastic/cardboard packaging)

limetrees32 · 28/06/2026 07:12

If the liners have handles I use two S hooks loop through handles and then hook together .
Or self adhesive hooks on outside of bin .

FredbassetOT · 28/06/2026 07:14

I very quickly gave up on ours. Ours are composted so the bags are biodegradable.

We cook from scratch. Raw veg goes in garden compost. Meal left overs are negligible. You might get a spoon if rice a couple of times a week. You can get through a lot of badges if you put a teaspoon of stuff in it every day.

If we left it until it was half full - which was over a week, the bag was already degrading and you couldn't lift it out.
We tried for a couple of months. And then gave up.

Still don't in my neck of the woods!

Nor here. October, apparently.

We used to do it years ago, but they stopped it as it was too expensive.

I love this post so much. It made me laugh. Loving the vitriol that's followed. 😂

Piggywaspushed · 28/06/2026 07:27

I get Beast bags. Just stretch them a bit and they fit over the sides so no slipping down. They are strong so don't rip as you stretch them.

Cheese55 · 28/06/2026 07:27

fairislecable · 27/06/2026 23:25

I also have the Joseph Joseph one it’s really such a good design and I keep mine in the fridge.

When the bag is full I put it in the chest freezer in the garage, these frozen bags are then put in the bin on collection day

This way I don’t have the smell of rotting food hanging about.

You don't have the smell of rotting food because there is a lid! Mine goes in my own big compost bin when full. Food does not rot that fast

redfishcat · 28/06/2026 07:28

We keep a big Tupperware in the fridge and collect food waster over the week in this, so it doesn’t go smelly.

PersephoneParlormaid · 28/06/2026 07:28

We can use any plastic bag to put the food in, so I use bigger bags.

wizzbitt · 28/06/2026 07:30

Buildingthefuture · 27/06/2026 23:12

Agree. It’s a shitty plastic thing with zero purpose or useability. However, I have multiple dogs so thankfully, very little food waste in this house, so mine is mainly ornamental!

I Like the sound of multiple dogs. Do the council provide them too? 😉

Dreamstosell · 28/06/2026 07:32

A large elastic band holds the bag in place

Namechangeforthis88 · 28/06/2026 07:38

Ours is another council where it's turned into energy, not compost so you can use any bag you like, and bread bags fit the bill perfectly.
