Is there some trick I’m missing with this stupid food caddy??

The council have been pressuring everyone to get a food bin, so I got one (at least it was free! Well not free, my expensive council tax is paying for it 🙄).
got the little grey bin under the sink. How on earth do you stop the silky bin bags from slipping down every time you put food in it? Driving me crazy!!

Just put it straight in the outside food waste bin!

Babs1937 · 28/06/2026 07:49

We live in the Westmorland and Furness area and our council does not have to implement the food waste collection until 2034, so a bit of a let off for us.

suki1964 · 28/06/2026 07:50

Between the cat, dog, hens and compost bin - zero food waste , or so little it goes in the general

I stopped using the service within weeks. Dragging out a bin with perhaps just one tiny bag at the bottom every other week was a flaff, so I held on till I had maybe 3 or 4 wee bags in it and ended up with maggots

We arent roadside and have to take our bins around a quarter of a mile for a collection point

Snackpocket · 28/06/2026 07:51

I gave up on the indoors caddie years ago. I either take it straight outside or put bits in a bowl and pop it outside at the end of the day.

Kim5678 · 28/06/2026 08:05

I have a Joseph Joseph one for indoors which is good but not very big. The bags are just useless, the council said to use two at once but they still split and let all the juices through so I line it with the brown paper you get from amazon packages to soak it up. I would rather just put the bigger caddy outside the back door but it’s too windy here

Pistacheeo · 28/06/2026 08:08

Hmm, I've been using biodegradable food waste bags and they do start to fall apart after a few days. I will find out if I need to change to newspaper or can skip the bags altogether.

fiorentina · 28/06/2026 08:14

We don’t use the inside caddy, just put food waste straight outside in the large one that we keep near the backdoor.

Saisong · 28/06/2026 08:26

The best biodegradable bags I've found are the Wilko caddy ones. They are roomy and have handles. They stretch nicely over the top, but not so much they strain, and don't slip down. Then the handles tie together for putting into the outside bin. Hated the ones without handles. I got mine from The Range.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/06/2026 08:26

The ordinary caddy liner bags I buy in the supermarket are plenty big enough - the top section with the ties, hangs down the outside.
I put a couple of pieces of kitchen roll in the bottom, to absorb any ‘juices’, every time I change the bag.

Oh wow, I thought our council was being slow, and ours is due to start food waste collections in 2027!

sohard · 28/06/2026 08:37

We have the narrow Joseph Joseph compost caddy. It’s great as it’s the width of a plate so you can scrape food in easily and the bags don’t slip down at all.

NoahVale · 28/06/2026 08:40

we have to use compostable bin liners,
i put them in and pull up the handle and generally they are ok.

for the poster whose bag deteriorated take the whole bin outside when you decant was my dd suggestion.

We do this. Bowl for veggie peeling which go in the compst. Bowl with irritating floppy plastic bag for cooked food waste and non compostable which goes in the council food waste caddie outside.

BCBird · 28/06/2026 08:50

We did this in the West Midlands years ago. It didn't last. We were given 1 roll of bags then once these had run out they seemed to stop collecting

MrGHost · 28/06/2026 08:50

We compost all our veggie peeling waste plus coffee grinds. No kids and no food waste.

Our bin is finally being delivered in July but no idea when collections starting.

The only thing that'll go in our food bin is meat/poultry bones.

Planting · 28/06/2026 08:56

My food waste bin went in a black sack and thrown in the black bin, long gone now.
However I did keep the small indoor food waste bin and use it for washing powder.

CurtsyFriends · 28/06/2026 08:59

I have these bags which make it a doddle. They are large and the drawstring makes them easy to tie:

BEAST BIN BAGS, 6 Rolls of 16 x... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CNKDL31W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Then I have a ceramic apple as the container. It looks much nicer sat on the worktop and has a charcoal filter to absorb any smells.

Green Apple Ceramic Compost... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B081HB1KNZ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I put a few sheets of kitchen roll in the bottom which absorbs any moisture.

Our council have been doing this for around 20yrs. We are quite used to it. Our black bins are only collected every 3 weeks but recycling and food waste is weekly.

Never had a food caddy told council I didn't need one because as a vegan I don't have the normal food waste, hardly have anything go out of date food wise [savvy shopper] and veg peelings go in the compost. They haven't given me one as a result.

I'm the same. I don't really have any. And the foxes eat any left over cat food.

ERthree · 28/06/2026 09:12

Have been using one for the last 12 years. Don't use the bags that come on a roll as they are tiny. I use either Co-op or Aldi green carrier bags, they are meant to be reused for food recycling.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 27/06/2026 22:43

What in the recycling fuckery is wrong with you?? 🤯😖😵‍💫

Has the country lost its sense of humour or just MN?

Whynottryagain · 27/06/2026 23:32

This. We're not allowed to use biodegradable bags. DH lines ours with newspaper.

However, we generate a fair bit of food waste as we cook from scratch, and I get annoyed with the little caddy filling up too fast. It also breeds / attracts fruit flies. I prefer to just have a food waste bowl on the side and when it's full or at the end of the each day (whichever is first) I empty it straight into the outside green bin and put it in the dishwasher. So we don't bother with bags anymore.

Edited

Have you looked into “scrappy cooking”? We also cook from scratch but have tried to minimise the food waste by using a lot of scraps. Obviously you can’t use everything, but it’s surprising how much you can reduce your food waste by!

Has it only recently become mandatory to recycle food waste in your local authority area? We have been recycling food waste for 20-25 years.

We’ve recently moved to a different area and neither of the local authorities which we’ve lived under/in have collected food waste until this year.

BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw · 28/06/2026 10:21

Honestly I just buy much bigger ones because this was also driving me crazy, exalt if you put something heavy like bones in there. You can get 20L ones on amazon.

Foundress · 28/06/2026 10:30

I was brought up on leftovers 😂. I have very little food waste so I don’t use the food caddy thing. Neither does my neighbour. He uses his to keep his dogs tennis balls in. I am trying to think of a use for mine. I am horribly suspicious of where all this separated waste goes. I think it could be all just getting dumped in landfill anyway. I hope I am wrong.

+1 for this. I don’t want food waste hanging about indoors
