Decluttering Thread 13 - Hopefully Lucky For Some!

Good morning fellow sorters, chuckers & sellers! Starting a new thread as No 12 was almost full. This thread is one of my favourites & I find it hugely inspiring. I have a very long way to go as my house still resembles a jumble sale but I have got rid of a lot over the last few months plus made some money into the bargain. Last night I transferred several carrier bags of clothes that are on Vinted into a pink velvet storage chest that, ironically, hadn’t been assembled & was taking up space in DH’s office 🤣🤣🤣 It’s now in front of the storage cubes in the lounge & honestly, the pleasure I get from seeing it & the space created is immense.
I need a day to dedicate to Vinted as I have bags of clothes still to photograph & upload, some clothes to try on which may end up on there too & some TJC rings to photograph for selling. They were quite expensive but I rarely wore them & now they’re too big. I have a huge car bill to pay so the extra pennies will be great. Have a productive day all!

Have made a decent start to clearing the loft of it's tonnes of rubbish. My boot is full of cushions, old curtains, sheets and fabrics. They'll be dropped off at my local Dunelm. I've emptied and moved a bookcase. The books are part sorted, that will be a charity run tomorrow along with some gift sets of candles and the like. There's now a couple of empty eaves storage cupboards and a bedding box almost clear. The rest of the loft still looks like a bomb hit it, but I feel like I've broken the back of this one. Still the clothes in the little wardrobe and a load of boxes to sort. Does anyone know where hangers can be donated? Do charity shops still want them?

SydneyCarton · 05/05/2026 10:18

Completely fell off the last thread but checking in again for the new one. Took a bag of textiles to the recycling bin at school this morning - so handy! - and dropped off a Vinted parcel after I listed a bunch of stuff yesterday. Just t-shirts and shorts for a couple of quid each but it got me back in the swing of things. I do have a couple of nice girls party dresses and DS's little Monsoon suit that he wore for his christening 😭which I should list now for summer weddings etc.

@Dizzierblonde The last time I took hangers to my local Cancer Research they didn't want them. I usually put mine in the recycling now as the least worst option!

Feeling good about the 3 bags of old clothes/sheets that 'might vome in handy for a sewing project' that i put in the fabric donation bins! Yay! Also 10 books to a friend (he asked for them, honest), and 3 piles sorted for school/church sale/niblings' children.

notatinydancer · 06/05/2026 09:48

Hi I’d like to join. I have 2 books to post today. I see some of you tally up what you’ve got rid of ?
I too have a huge Vinted pile.
I’m also going to put a load of paperwork in the recycling bin.
I struggle to get motivated but when I do get rid of stuff it feels great. 😊

CheesePlantFeet · 06/05/2026 21:17

Welcome @notatinydancer Some of us keep count, or set targets. My aim is to get rid of 2026 things this year. Some people don't keep track. Use the thread however works best to motivate you

I've emptied out my box for Vinted and taken what was left unsold to the charity shop. It's nice to have the corner of my office back! I also went through the bathroom storage and got rid of a heap of empty bottles that my DD seems to not throw away for whatever reason and some open products that have being hanging around for years.
I'm really just putting off getting back to sorting through the loft!

Charity shop:5x tops, 3x skirts, 3x dresses
Bin / recycling: 18x old/empty beauty products, 5x "useful" packaging boxes /bags
Vinted/sold locally: plant pot and plant

Total: 1168

notatinydancer · 06/05/2026 21:21

I’ve chucked out / recycled old course work books and notebooks.
Next to work on unsold Vinted clothes and upload a few more.
2026 items is a great idea.
11/2026 today.

Decided to buy a box to store all DD17’s hair dye, bleach etc as the bathroom windowsill has virtually disappeared! Can tuck it neatly under the wall mounted cupboard.

Recycling - a few pieces of packaging.

Four tubs and two ramekins returned to owner.

Donate/sell - three children’s books.

mutleyschuckles · 07/05/2026 16:09

Oddly all my vinted stuff (clearly worn/used) has sold & been posted over the last few days with the exception of a brand new with tags on mini skirt 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ll reduce the price on it & see if it shifts this week.
have had more ins this week- uniform & trousers to replace the grown out of stuff, Replacement dog harness, replacement pillows & new dog toys for his birthday today. I did clear out his toy box a week or so ago though. Have also got a few “stocking filler” birthday pressies for my husband as his main ones are experiences. They are sweets & nice choc though so won’t take up space for long!
going to go through those plastic storage bins you get for the garden this weekend & either use what’s in there in the coming weeks or donate/bin the contents. Will hopefully make room for the boys bike & scooter then

IndianSummer78 · 07/05/2026 17:33

Going down the side of the house today. Side of the house which was DH’s other storage area.

I feel the statement ‘ I may be sometime’ is one I would have been throwing in DH’s direction had he been here.

I have work that needs doing on that side of the house and the scaffolder told me I’m going to have to get rid of all of the junk. On the plus side it’s all going in a skip with the other building materials that will need to be got shot off so at least I don’t have to put it in the car and go to the tip.

Acheyelbows · 09/05/2026 15:32

Recycled A3 used resources.
Recycled cardboard cartons.

Sorted pencils, parers and erasers into an old pencil case so now they are all stored in the one place, no hunting for spares.

Linen packs put in a zip up fabric storage rectangle. Two sets added to the textile recycling pile.

Wellies thrown out. (Rubber had split)
Winter salts, car covers and antifreeze moved from porch to garage.

Pigtailsandall · 09/05/2026 17:41

I've had a good few things go out too which I am happy about:

Set of gift bags (counting as one)
Set of postcards (counting as one)
Toothbrush
Language book
2 kids books sold on vinted
2 kids tops sold on vinted
5 cat toys
4 sets of envelope packages
Glass jar
Pack of candles

But I have had ins too!

Pair of shorts
Pair of dungarees for me
Book

Total ins= 115
Total outs= 320

Too small converse

Hasthisreallyhappened · 09/05/2026 20:58

Side of house looks amazing. All junk neatly hidden behind front hedge to go in the skip next week and two good to throw items listed for sale.

Couldn’t find the broom so I haven’t swept it, just let the ddog out and the broom is propped by the back door 🤦‍♀️. I must have walked past it numerous times today.

I am selling my house and have 30 years of stuff to sort through… please talk some sense to my worn out brain mumsnetters…I love to wear knee length socks every day in the winter or whenever it’s slightly cold outside as otherwise I get cold legs. I have about 40 pairs of them. This is clearly unnecessary!!!! Some pairs I haven’t worn for ages. What is the sensible number to keep???
I know this is a basic question for most people but I don’t find this kind of thing easy at all 😢

I would get rid of the uncomfortable ones and the horrible bobbly ones. Keep half for use and store the other half as replacements. You will eventually need them.

Ooh I'm more ruthless!
Get rid of anything that is wearing thin/ has holes/looks worn, bobbly etc
Get rid of anything uncomfortable. Too tight elastic, too loose elastic
Get rid of anything that is an ugly colour or pattern
Keep your 10 favourite pairs after that

Princessfluffy · 10/05/2026 20:36

So helpful, thank you both💐
I have 50 pairs of tights in good Nick, some still new. I used to wear tights every day in winter but I didn’t wear ANY last winter (too busy wearing the knee socks 😝 ). How many do I keep?
I think I only own a couple of winter dresses and a couple of skirts (went down 3 dress sizes last year and that made it easy to throw all my old ones away as they don’t fit me anymore.
