Sorting one thing a day

Keffert · 01/11/2025 07:11

My house feels like it’s got away from me a bit recently. I’ve decided to spend November trying to get it a bit more organised in the hope that it feels more under control by the time we put the Christmas decorations up. I’m going to try to go through one drawer/cupboard a day. Take everything out, clean the cupboard, put stuff back in a more organised way. Decluttering will hopefully be a side effect of this as I come across stuff that we no longer need but isn’t going to be the main focus this time.

Would anyone like to join me?

I’m going to start today with the fridge/freezer. It’s not overly full but it’s a mess and there are probably a few old condiments that can go as well as a few squashed grapes in the fruit box.

I would love to join you! My house is a bit of a disaster.
With it being half term and being off work I’ve managed to sort through my clothes, sort the utility cupboard out (that’s where I hide any Xmas presents so I needed this done asap!) and the cupboard under the stairs. There is still hundreds of other jobs to do as well.

I do have a very busy life but hopefully I can find a small job to do through the week and leave bigger ones until the weekends!

I get so overwhelmed by the amount of stuff in the house usually that I go to do something and just don’t know where to start so end up doing nothing so hopefully posting here will help me!

I’ve got a pretty busy day today and I need to do a big clean in general but I’m going to aim to try and get drawers or cupboard in the kitchen done. My freezers both need defrosted but that can be a job for tomorrow.

Flameup · 01/11/2025 07:26

Don’t be tempted to sell stuff you don’t want unless high value. It will sit in bin bags languishing for ages.

just package up and charity.

This sounds like a fantastic idea. We had an extremely busy summer and last half term was intense so a focus on decluttering and cleaning the house in November before the Christmas decorations go up sounds like a brilliant idea. It's a small win but I'm going to commit to sorting through my youngest sons clothes today and getting rid of what no longer fits him.

Tbh I do mini declutters fairly regularly so I don’t think there is too much crap lurking (apart from the dc rooms because they don’t like to part with anything) but everything is just shoved in cupboards rather than being put away neatly. There will definitely be things hiding at the back of cupboards that can go though.

That’s why I’m aiming small. One drawer or cupboard a day is doable. If I tried to spend a day doing it I’d never get around to it. Sometimes just starting and doing one things spurs me on to do more as well 😀

Put mumsnet away…. Get cracking!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/11/2025 13:16

A couple of years ago I vowed that once the clocks went back, I’d tackle one drawer or cupboard every day.
I did precisely two! Maybe this time….

caringcarer · 01/11/2025 13:47

I've been decluttering furiously as foster son has gone off to uni so I've got rid of things he says he no longer wants. I've had the cleaner up there giving everything a good clean. I got him to come up when I went through drawers of clothes and there was loads of stuff he'd just outgrown. I've bagged it up and taken to the Salvation Army shop. I've cleared clutter from one of the spare rooms before my sister comes. As a reward for decluttering I've treated us to new bedding for that room too. I've cleared out things from conservatory but really just to give me room to stash the Xmas gifts before Xmas. I want to focus on my bedroom next. The wardrobe is framed full of things that no longer fit me. I'm going to bag up stuff that is 2 sizes smaller than me and back to Salvation Army shop to donate. My bedroom needs redecorating but must get rid of lots of stuff first.

caringcarer · 01/11/2025 13:48

I spend 1/2 an hour each day then give myself a little reward like a latte.

Keffert · 01/11/2025 18:29

Fridge freezer done. A few ends of jars thrown out, couple of squashed grapes as predicted and a wrinkly pepper unearthed.

Then did a big shop and filled all the space back up 😆

Ended up sorting a couple of cupboard shelves as I put the shopping away too.

Tomorrow I’m going to do the cupboard that has baking trays/ oven dishes/ cheese grater/ instant pot/ toastie maker in. Again, I doubt there’s much to get rid of but it needs a tidy and a good wipe down.

I disagree with this. Certain things sell really easily and at the end of the day if you can sell something for a fiver, all those fivers soon add up. It’s worth listing something for a week to see if it sells. If it hasn’t sold in a week then yes, take it to the charity shop. I’ve made over £900 on Vinted selling stuff I would previously taken to the charity shop. The cost of living has gone up massively and with higher taxes on the horizon if I think there’s a chance of selling something, I will do that first.

Last weekend I sold a big box of Duplo. I put it on Vinted for £40 and it sold within an hour. I then listed a baby memory scrap book. It sold shortly after listing and I the person that bought it paid the full listing price of £5. The original book only cost £12.

So it’s always worth trying. After selling on Vinted for a while you get a feel for what’s likely to sell and at what price range. And never go with the suggested prices that Vinted give - they are always really low because Vinted make money at the point of sale - so it’s in their interest for people to price low and sell faster.

Not a thread about Vinted I know, but I’ve made a lot of money selling low value items for relatively little effort, and it’s helped make ends meet at times.

TwistyTurnip · 01/11/2025 18:45

Just to add to my previous post, I’ve been actively decluttering since February/ March this year and I’m finally starting to feel in control of my house. It’s so much easier to keep it tidy. At times it will feel like an impossible task, but just keep going. You will get there in the end!

MercuryRising · 01/11/2025 18:50

So day 1 done ✅ I decluttered my bathroom and got rid of a storage trolley that was making the bathroom look constantly messy. Tomorrow I'm going to do my son's clothes as that was my intention today.

clary · 01/11/2025 19:09

Excellent idea @Keffert

I have started already but will join you all.

Earlier this week I tidied out the cupboard under the sink (many things to chuck) and the cupboard I keep baking tins and bowls in (ditto).

Today I tided the spice/tins cupboard – spices actually not too bad but chucked a solid jar of Ovaltine (bought for a cake I think) and a bottle of cake release that was 10 years out of date (still sealed but noooooo).

Doing well all!

itsoktonotbeokitstrue · 01/11/2025 19:12

I want to join please. I want to get sorted for Xmas as well. Starting on my bedroom first

Ohmygodthepain · 01/11/2025 19:22

I'm in please. Today I've defrosted the freezer (can't actually remember the last time it was done) and cleaned out the fridge. Grim.

Tomorrow gonna sort the clean washing mountain...

clary · 02/11/2025 09:18

Tidied my underwear drawer. Chucked two odd socks

Littlebassist · 02/11/2025 10:04

Great idea - I’m with you and have made a start already! I’m likely to have a house full over December/January as well so may as well get cracking over November and then I’ll be less stressed (hopefully 😆)

IwishIhadcheese · 02/11/2025 10:11

We started on the spare room yesterday. Dh is doing a dump run with stuff from the ottoman bed.
I sold a tent on vinted for £40 so good result!

Today I’m planning on sorting the bathroom cupboard.

Haha I also have ‘that’ cupboard in the kitchen that never seems to be tidy with pots and trays and all kinds of cooking utensils in!

user1471508872 · 02/11/2025 10:25

I didn’t manage to get any sorting out done yesterday but the time I finished my big clean. It’s my daughter’s birthday tomorrow so we ended up having family over and going for a meal.

I have made a start on cleaning under my bed this morning. It’s a divan bed but the two drawers are broke so I need to fix them before I can get in and sort. I’ve managed to take the mattress up and lift the base up to make a start but I’m off to take my daughter to gymnastics and go for a run. So I’ll finish it when I’m back.

confusedlots · 02/11/2025 10:30

Follow dillysdollies on Instagram. There is a 30
day declutter challenge for November, you can follow along and complete the daily challenges eg. sorting out your cutlery drawer one day, fridge another day.

ifyoulikechocolate · 02/11/2025 11:17

I’ll join you. I have to two days worth. For yesterday, I will tidy a drawer in my bedroom- has all travel related stuff eg adapters, mini bottles and it has nail stuff. For today, I will sort a kitchen cupboard. I get bored if I stay in the same space.
