Sorting one thing a day

My house feels like it’s got away from me a bit recently. I’ve decided to spend November trying to get it a bit more organised in the hope that it feels more under control by the time we put the Christmas decorations up. I’m going to try to go through one drawer/cupboard a day. Take everything out, clean the cupboard, put stuff back in a more organised way. Decluttering will hopefully be a side effect of this as I come across stuff that we no longer need but isn’t going to be the main focus this time.

Would anyone like to join me?

I’m going to start today with the fridge/freezer. It’s not overly full but it’s a mess and there are probably a few old condiments that can go as well as a few squashed grapes in the fruit box.

Not sure what to do tomorrow…Tupperware cupboard is a bit of a mess. Baking cupboard is jammed full but I think it’s more a case of using stuff up in there as I sorted it fairly recently. There are loads of tins and bowls etc in there but I do use them all. Maybe I just need a bigger cupboard 🤣

Or I could be really brave and do the glasses. I love glassware. We have a lot!

Did discover three jars of rosemary though as I’ve obviously remembered it was getting low on multiple occasions when I’ve gone shopping

Glad it’s not just me that does this!

Today I did the tea towel and cleaning cloth drawer which was good - much tidier now and binning three mopheads for a steam cleaning gizmo that I have chucked bc it wasn't working. So why have I kept the towelling heads? no idea.

mrsdolittle · 03/11/2025 21:07

I managed to thin down one of my bookshelves today. All books I want to keep have a place on the shelf. Four enormous bags ready for charity shops. Tomorrow I am going to tackle one of my random cupboards full of random shit!!!

Tammygirl12 · 03/11/2025 21:08

Today I tidied the baking equipment cupboard which also has lots of baby bottles in etc. looking much better.

tomorrow I’ll do the cupboard under the stairs which is full to the top of shoes and bags for life and bubble wrap! Wish me luck

itsoktonotbeokitstrue · 03/11/2025 21:11

Ok so I am starting by doing our bedroom. But we are also redecorating because it’s so bad in there. We can’t afford a carpet so I borrowed a cleaner and that’s now done. Painted and glossed half the room. I have freegled a load of craft bits and passed on a wooden kids puzzle left hanging in my room.

Follow dillysdollies on Instagram. There is a 30
day declutter challenge for November, you can follow along and complete the daily challenges eg. sorting out your cutlery drawer one day, fridge another day.

I can’t find it.

oooh you can sell them easily on the World of Books app – you just scan the barcodes and if it wants them, it gives you the price. Once you have £5 worth you can box them up and take them to an InPost locker – money straight to your bank account.

Nothing achieved today as work ruined me! I’m not going to be too hard on myself. In fact I’m counting putting the recycling out!

This was me today 🤣

TheOnlyWaterInTheForest · 04/11/2025 16:19

I've made a start - sorted out my makeup drawer. Not much to get rid of, but it's much tidier. Listed a few things on Freecycle id already sorted out, and decided which cupboards to look at next.
I'm happy to have made a start.

Keffert · 04/11/2025 17:26

I was on a roll today. Did the glasses first, got rid of a set of wine glasses I don’t like and some flutes I also don’t like because the stem is too short and the rim too chunky. I was umming and aahing about these as they do get used when we have everyone here at Christmas but ds1 pointed out 16 flutes is probably enough and made me put them in a box before I changed my mind. Cupboard looks better without them but I am still wavering!
Then I did the Tupperware cupboard, one stray lid binned (bet I find the pot now!) and two soy sauce fish from sushi.
Baking cupboard had a bit of a tidy. Got rid of a set of three little dishes that are for if you want to pretend you’re a tv chef and lay out all your ingredients. I’m not that person. I have nicer little dishes for other purposes if I ever do decide I need to do this.
Then I tidied my pyjamas. And then dd emptied the hat/scarf/glove drawer onto the floor so I helped her tidy it and gave it a sort out.

Tomorrow I may do under the kitchen sink. Or I may venture into dd2’s bedroom as I tried to dust it yesterday and every surface was covered. Feels like a losing battle though as I know it will be just as bad again in a couple of days.

Thank you!

Keffert · 04/11/2025 18:45

@IwishIhadcheese that definitely counts.
@Tammygirl12 have you made it back out??
@TheOnlyWaterInTheForest i need to tidy my make up drawer too. I sorted it fairly recently (did an orjenise 100- another instagrammer)but it’s quite small so gets messy quickly.

I do follow dilly too and have done some of her challenges in the past but this time round I want to focus more on cleaning/tidying than decluttering. Decluttering is a side effect though!

OP posts:
clary · 04/11/2025 20:46

Oooh well done @Keffert that's great work. I am like you tbh "hmmm but maybe we need these glasses" NO you never use them and they need to go. Ditto the dishes for laying out the chopped onion, shredded cabbage as well. Who does that?

I have tidied my second tea towel drawer (yes I have too many tea towels) and not binned anything, but it is nice and neat and also clean – the dust in the crevices ugh!

ticktockitsNCtime · 04/11/2025 21:35

Good work!

Ive been at a loose end recently with the dark evenings. I miss doing gardening in the evenings, so I’ve decided to set myself a winter challenge. I’m going to go through the entire house room by room, and I’m going to declutter ruthlessly, deep cleaning as I go. I started tonight and I’ve been busy for three hours with the radio on. It’s very therapeutic. I started on the kitchen and I got rid of loads of empty spice jars and any Tupperware without lids. Also some out of date food.

mrsdolittle · 04/11/2025 21:56

Good Work All.
Today I tackled a couple of cupboards in the living room. More tidying than throwing out to be honest - but everything a lot more organised. I have a couple of boxes of random paperwork (known as the Boxes of Doom) which I managed to thin down - but still no real order to them.

working for the rest of the week so unlikely to achieve much more. But pretty happy with what I’ve done so far 😊

Keffert · 05/11/2025 06:26

@clary i really struggled with the glasses because they do get used when we have big groups here or if the younger kids ask for “champagne” at Christmas/new year/other special occasions I make them use those glasses because I don’t like them. But the last time we had enough people to use every champagne glass was probably 3 years ago and the kids can just use the nicer ones on those infrequent occasions (and hope they don’t break them!)

Oh wow I’m really impressed by this. The darker evenings usually make me just hibernate but it’s a really good idea to use them productively

Got home at 11.30 and went straight to dd2’s room to make a start. It took me 2.5 hours 😭 There were hairbands and pens and beads and loom bands and teddies and bits of paper everywhere. She had loads of bags lying around just full of random stuff (she’s never grown out of the transporting schema!). Ended up emptying everything and putting it all back where it should be as her version of tidying recently has obviously been just shoving stuff in wherever. Few bits binned/put in recycling but mostly just tidied.
I might threaten her with binning it all though if she can’t keep it tidier!

Tomorrow is a long day at work so I think
l’ll go for an easy one and do my makeup drawer

OP posts:
Keffert · 06/11/2025 20:16

I’m so glad I picked an easy one for today as I got home and really wasn’t feeling it but made myself knowing it would only take a couple of minutes. After saying there was nothing to get rid of I did throw out a broken powder compact and a dried up brow gel. I have a concealer on the watch list too as I think it might be leaking but am not 100% sure I didn’t chuck it in there without the lid done up properly one time.

Tomorrow I’m going to go back to the kitchen and do under the sink.

It’s also helping pre planning what I’m going to do each day.

How is everyone else getting on?

OP posts:
clary · 06/11/2025 22:59

I had a long day and a busy one so towards the end of it I tidied the cutlery drawer. It was actually OK tho there were some mysterious plastic bags for cooking chicken I didn't know I had. Will see if I use one in the next month and if not then they are out.

Tomorrow then I need to do the utensils drawer – may take longer!

Keffert · 07/11/2025 06:25

That may be a small one @clary but I bet it’s rewarding. An organised cutlery drawer is always so satisfying!

ooooh tea towels! That's a good one. I did my baking cupboard earlier this week and it was deeply satisfying.

A spice drawer you say? I feel I may have envy. Mine is a shelf in a head-height cupboard which means (when I cba to take out 20 bottles to get to the one I want) I am always knocking glass jars of spice over the kitchen top to (sometimes) smash on the floor, oh dear.

Storage traysor baskets are the answer to this. Bring the deep tray out of the cupboard pick the spice whole tray goes back. I use them everywhere and they make it so much easier

TakeMe2Insanity · 07/11/2025 06:46

Fantastic thread idea. I’ve been doing the same. Following bereavement, a baby and just life with kids things have taken a back seat. I’ve been aiming for at least one thing a day. Agree with previous poster who said don’t keep for the intention of selling otherwise things block space!

Yes I have my spices in trays too. Game changer. I should probably try to do the same for my oils/vinegars etc tbh
