Sorting one thing a day

Keffert · 01/11/2025 07:11

My house feels like it’s got away from me a bit recently. I’ve decided to spend November trying to get it a bit more organised in the hope that it feels more under control by the time we put the Christmas decorations up. I’m going to try to go through one drawer/cupboard a day. Take everything out, clean the cupboard, put stuff back in a more organised way. Decluttering will hopefully be a side effect of this as I come across stuff that we no longer need but isn’t going to be the main focus this time.

Would anyone like to join me?

I’m going to start today with the fridge/freezer. It’s not overly full but it’s a mess and there are probably a few old condiments that can go as well as a few squashed grapes in the fruit box.

Nice to have so many people joining me 😃Did the cupboard I said I was going to and got rid of a tin that should be more useful than it is. It’s a big deep baking tray with a lid, used for making brownies or flapjacks and then can stay in the tin with the lid on to transport or store. But the non stick is peeling off so I don’t like using it even with liners and the lid is really flipping annoying. Plus it takes up a huge amount of space both in the cupboard and on the side. Also got rid of two small disposable foil trays that I was keeping just in case.

Then I was feeling motivated and still had time while the roast was in the oven so also tidied and wiped out the pan cupboard and another cupboard that contains jugs/butter dishes/egg cups/ramekins/other random stuff. Nothing got rid of out of those two but they’re clean and tidy now.

Tomorrow I’m going to tackle the herbs&spices/vinegar/oil etc cupboard

I’ve just tidied mine & OH’s bedroom, it’s become a real dumping ground. Most people have a dumping ground in their spare room but we’ve had PIL staying so that’s already spotless. I’m about to tackle some dusting as well (several dust allergy sufferers here, it’s a bloody nightmare!)
The spices & herbs & oil cupboard is one I’d rather avoid frankly 😆 good luck!

Not that I ever do that oh no indeed 😂except I do

ooooh tea towels! That's a good one. I did my baking cupboard earlier this week and it was deeply satisfying.

A spice drawer you say? I feel I may have envy. Mine is a shelf in a head-height cupboard which means (when I cba to take out 20 bottles to get to the one I want) I am always knocking glass jars of spice over the kitchen top to (sometimes) smash on the floor, oh dear.

TheOnlyWaterInTheForest · 02/11/2025 17:25

I'll join in! I hope to move house in the summer so I'd like to have a gradual sort of everything, rather than a last minute panic. I'm going to start in my bedroom - maybe makeup and toiletries.

Dunderheided · 02/11/2025 17:31

I likely won’t post much, but I’ll lurk away for motivation! More power to your elbow…

JellyBabiesmunch · 02/11/2025 17:33

I’ll join in. I have SO much crap to get rid of.

Game. Changer.

ooooh that is NICE

Just had a (ahem) discussion with DH about a box of dates I found in the spice cupboard - best before 26 July...

2014

He and DS1 both protesting that they are still OK to eat. My point is that if DH liked them so much (no one else does btw) he would have eaten them in the intervening 12 years. He responded could he throw away anything I hadn't used for 12 years? tbh, yes!

IwishIhadcheese · 02/11/2025 18:07

One black bag of ‘stuff’ gone from the bathroom! How was there so much! It’s not a big room!

lastchancesalmon · 02/11/2025 18:28

I’m in - had already been thinking about this, so the group motivation will be helpful. I have a very specific goal as we’ve been renovating and have a lot of crap stored in my room whilst work going on elsewhere. Now we’ve reached a stage where we can start to sort and return things to permanent homes. Yesterday I sorted out my chest of drawers and today’s achievement was sorting through storage bags of bedding - have one big bag to go to the tip textile recycling, one to go to charity and some duvets superfluous to requirements to get rid of too (how?) Also created storage in drawers on the landing for bedding and towels in everyday use so easy to put away after washing and get out when needed.

Put the duvets on freecycle or give them to a homeless charity

Browniesandcustard · 02/11/2025 18:56

I’m in … I’ve moved house twice in the past year so managed to get rid of a lot, but still plenty to go! I’m going to pop a bath on in a minute so I’ll declutter the bathroom caddy thing whilst it’s filling up 😎

JJ1992 · 02/11/2025 20:48

Please can I join in? 😀 although I'm starting tomorrow 😂👍

Judellie · 02/11/2025 20:56

I have just found this so will be starting tomorrow too @JJ1992 ; today was spent 'Christmassing' as I wrapped all the presents I've already bought tho I did get rid of a couple of random things.
Really need to sort the fridge so will do that tomorrow

user1471508872 · 02/11/2025 21:22

I managed to fix the drawers and sort out the bedding that was in there. I’ve managed to get rid of four sets of the kids old bedding.

mrsdolittle · 02/11/2025 21:28

I’m in too please. Recently dropped to working three days a week after being full time (and some) for years. Have pledged to do at least an hour decluttering on my non work days. Already tackled my food cupboards - embarrassing amount of out of date stuff has been binned. Planning to make a start on my bookshelves tomorrow (which is going to be hard - I hate parting with books). Indoor freezer is next on my list. But honestly I have literally rooms of stuff I need to sort/declutter (slight hoarding issue plus previous demanding job = a shed load of crap) so this is a long term project.

pittapat · 02/11/2025 21:43

Yes! I have posted a few threads recently regarding the clutter im drowning in at home. It just seems like too much to tackle as every room has drawers, cupboards and shelves full of stuff we don’t need. It’s really overwhelming which puts me off making a start on it. But I think breaking it down room by room, drawer by drawer might be a good approach. I will start tomorrow!

lastchancesalmon · 02/11/2025 22:26

Thank you @JellyBabiesmunchthose are good ideas 😊

Wintertime2025 · 02/11/2025 22:46

I’m in as well

Keffert · 03/11/2025 19:06

How has everyone done today?

I got my spices cupboard done but no extras today, after a full day at work plus cooking and normal housework I’m ready to sit down. Got rid of a cruet set that has never worked that well (but was fairly expensive so I’ve previously kept it). All spices well in date (apart from mustard powder but I’m pretty sure that doesn’t actually go off so kept it anyway) so didn’t get rid of any of those. Did discover three jars of rosemary though as I’ve obviously remembered it was getting low on multiple occasions when I’ve gone shopping, two are unopened though so not a problem. Cupboard is clean and tidy (until the next time I need something from the back anyway…)

Nothing achieved today as work ruined me! I’m not going to be too hard on myself. In fact I’m counting putting the recycling out!
