Yes but if you are going to make spag bol you need to make sure you've got the mince out of the freezer (for example)

MamaG · 23/04/2008 12:45

I'll do a list (in my head) of week's meals

then think about packed lunches

breakfast

etc

Greeny, you can't make spag bol if you haven't bought the mince etc

MamaG · 23/04/2008 12:46

ooooooh Mercy

CatIsSleepy · 23/04/2008 12:46

aaah DrN I was thinking it was sweet your dh has his frends round for tea

Tutter · 23/04/2008 12:46

i'm not sure i understand "menu plan"

is it writing down each meal for the next days/week

then buying the right ingredients?

if so, then i understand why i don't menu plan

Twiglett · 23/04/2008 12:47

I'm an 'I have mushrooms wtf can I do with mushrooms' kind of gal I must admit

but I also have a store cupboard that would be suitable for a 50 year nuclear bunker

my idea of trying new recipes is seeing what I've got, looking it up in a book and then substituting the stuff it says I need for the stuff I need .. you know like haven't any basil I'll use oregano, haven't any white wine vinegar and I'll use an old dishcloth etc

jumpingbeans · 23/04/2008 12:47

Menu plan, how can you know what you might fancy for dinner next week?

but if I buy a chicken I'll figure ok roast chicken and stuff, then maybe a stir fry, sandwiches and possibly stock if I can be farked

DrNortherner · 23/04/2008 12:48

what if tues is spag bol day and dh says 'stuff it, i fancy a chinese takeaway'

Do you say BUT TUES IS SPAG BOL DAY YOU MORON.

cmotdibbler · 23/04/2008 12:48

In the edgy world of the non menu planner we defrost mince in the microwave.

And maybe have 30 tins of tomatoes in the cupboard...

i menu plan. i plan to get the takeway menu out every night!

bossybritches · 23/04/2008 12:50

I don't menis plan as such but I always have a freezer of mince (in pound bags) & chicken breast/chicken quartes /chops/steaks as I buy whenon special offer. Then with a few staples I can trot out most meals with a LITTLE planning.

otherwise like No-Biggy says it's the old Ready-Steady Cook approach!

VinegarTits · 23/04/2008 12:50

I menu plan adhoc, took chicken out the freezer to defrost for tonights tea, havent decided what i going to make with it yet though

DrNortherner · 23/04/2008 12:51

Ds is much better at school this year Cod thanks. His teacher loves him

MamaG · 23/04/2008 12:51

It would be plain weird to plan each day and stick to it.

I have a vague idea of what day, i.e. if its a busy day ferrying DC around ,we might have past a becasue its quick

Then roast chicken on a day when I'm pottering around at home

CatIsSleepy · 23/04/2008 12:52

but surely when people are shopping they have some inkling in their head about what they might be going to cook with all the stuff they're buying?

well, i wing it with stuff for the dsses - always have the same kind of bits in for them

it doesn't take much menu planning to organise food for me and dh. i don't do much from-scratch cooking. have given myself a 5-year break from it. once the dsses are in school i shall become a domestic goddess

until then i dedicate myself to marks and spencer pre-prepared meals
