I sometimes use a recipe to check that I haven't forgotten any of the ingredients ( e.g when making bouef bourguignon or chicken risotto) but stuff that I've made a million times before ( e.g spag bol, chilli) I just throw together

Choreography?!!! I've heard it all now.

I know a by who does 'young inventors club' and chess.

Psychomum5 · 23/04/2008 14:27

she loves it, altho I less so when she decides that all her siblings need to show off a dance that she has choreographed, while DH and I have our first night at eating dinner together without the kiddies (we try once a week as we get to talk without interuptions {well, we would had we not had 'shows' to watch})

Nosnik · 23/04/2008 14:27

I cook from my own special recipes! They normally consist of a vague resemblance to something from a cook book that I once read but can only remember half the ingredients and none of the method, and looks nothing like what I remember the picture looks like!

I don't entertain cos my house is too small

Psychomum5 · 23/04/2008 14:28

she is planning her GSCE's around going to uni to study drama and dance.

I am hopefully raising a genious who will tread the boards on broadway....

Nosnik · 23/04/2008 14:29

listening to you lot I think I will move out to the countryside where there are no weekend activities except lie ins and country walks! Also I'm never learning to drive so that I never have to be an unpaid taxi driver!!!

Psychomum5 · 23/04/2008 14:29

anyhooo........school run.....

Menu planning is for women who colour coordinate their duster drawer.

I menu plan .

If I didn't we would waste loads of food. I agree that you tend to have a lot of "staples" e.g. rice, pasta, tinned tomatoes in the house anyway, and stuff like fish, chicken, mince etc in the freezer. But if I didn't menu plan, I wouldn't know what I needed in the way of fresh things like mushrooms, peppers, sping onions etc.

I plan a meal for each night, although sometimes the meals end up being swapped round within a week, e.g. we end up up having Monday's meal on Thursday and vice versa.

I do cook recipe type meals most nights, but they are often ones I have done frequently, so don't actually need to consult the recipe while cooking. If I want to try a new recipe, or something I haven't cooked for a while, then i try to do it on a day when I will have a bit more time.

I can't imagine going shopping and not actually knowing what I would need in terms of fresh ingredients.

SoMuchToBits · 23/04/2008 14:40

I very rarely watch cookery shows. (Too busy planning and cooking meals! )

NomDePlume · 23/04/2008 14:41

I don't really menu plan. In fact I shop on the day (quite £££ way of doing it, I'll admit). Admittedly, I do sort of stick to a pool of around 20 or so regular dishes and will occasionally flick through a cookbook (of which we have many!) or have a look on the bbc recipes site or the Good Food site (we get the mag anyway) for a bit of new inspiration once in a while.

Tonight it is one of those nights. We are having maple roasted sticky chicken, thyme and veg tray bake with crusty bread. Chicken thighs and drummers are marinading in the fridge as I type.

madamez · 23/04/2008 14:43

If you menu plan it's a sign that you have been a SAHM too long and need either to get a job or have a raging SM affair with the Ocado man before you turn into a complete Stepford Wife.

Iota · 23/04/2008 14:45

au contraire madamez

I contend that being a SAHM gives me the freedom to shop any time I like, so I don't need to plan ahead.

People who work have to be more organised

RustyBear · 23/04/2008 14:48

You must have very organised teenagers, Cod if you know that far in advance when they are going to be in for a meal - I'm lucky if I know by in the morning whether they will be here that night!

doggiesayswoof · 23/04/2008 14:48

No no no madamez, wrong way round

Menu planning is much more essential if you have a job ime. We get in at 6 and I need to know what dd is having for her tea.

SoMuchToBits · 23/04/2008 14:48

I am a SAHM, but I also menu planned before I had ds, when I was working. And if I got a job (or had an affair with the Ocado man, which is unlikely, seeing as we aren't in an Ocado delivery area ) I would still menu plan. Let's face it, I am just a PLANNER!

I also have to menu plan (admittedlly half-heartedly) because dh has no idea how to put a meal togetheer. He will just open the fridge and say 'there's nothing to eat' - he needs to be told.

PestoMonster · 23/04/2008 14:50

I menu plan. It makes life so much easier. We all know what we're having as I put the menu up on the noticeboard in the kitchen. Not only does it mean very little superfluous shopping, but it also means you can defrost stuff the night before.

Also, of course, the weekly menu can be flexible when necessary. Ours is a guideline and not 'set in stone'
