Have been asked to buy a “cool kettle and toaster” for a 20-something. Help

First home. Offered to buy something useful. Was asked for cool toaster and kettle. I am paralysed - I think I remember having views on these sorts of things in my 20s (nobody wanted an eternal beau granny kettle did they) but I’m not up with trends in kettle design now. Have looked and there is a vast range. Please post links of suggestions - assume money no object - obv it is but I’m just interested in aesthetics at the moment. Ta very much!

What about something like this?

Smeg is overrated, particularly large appliances (eyes useless Smeg fridge freezer that we inherited). Plus the overt branding, even on a kettle, won't be to everyone's taste.

I'd ask about colours and materials, then go from there. Dualit is great for longevity as everything can be mended, plus it looks good.

When we bought our first flat I was eyeing up a Smeg fridge until my now Dh told me what smeg is. I don't know if this word is generally used - english is not my first language and not surprisingly I've never had a conversation involving the word smeg aside from this one with my dh - so maybe people don't know what smeg means for (at least some of us). My Dh told me it means dried cum. I assume that's right. I just realised I've never checked this with anyone else, perhaps he was winding me up.

No he wasn’t. If you’ve ever seen Red Dwarf smeg is used instead of swearing e.g. calling someone a smeghead

I have a Sage kettle which I love. I’d struggle without a temperature control kettle now. Are they into coffee at all? If they are then a temperature controlled gooseneck kettle would probably be appreciated.

magicstar1 · 26/04/2024 09:31

We have a glass kettle and toaster. The kettle lights up when boiling, and you can see the toast changing colour too lol.
The best part is that it matches any kitchen as there’s no colour.

Bollindger · 26/04/2024 09:50

Can I just say get a 4 piece toaster.
It may seem odd, but the couple will appreciate not having to wait and it is only a few quid more.

My friend also has a kettle, one that connects to the Wi-Fi and will turn it's self on.

weirdoboelady · 26/04/2024 09:53

All kettles boil the same. Toast varies. So the toaster is the important bit.

Dualit for toaster every time. And by every time I mean you will get a cool classic which you will never have to replace (assuming you buy a 'proper' SS Dualit and not something from their cheap ranges which is not made by them.

Something like this. https://www.dualit.com/products/combi-21 I posted the one with the sandwich thingy because my only regret is not having bought one with this utility, 30 years ago. Toaster still looks brand new, has had one element replaced in all that time (a DIY task I believe).

If you want the best toast in the world and budget really is no object, ditch the electric kettle and just buy an AGA, by the way.....

We have this Alessi set. Often come up on eBay.

Edited

Came here to recommend Alessi Plisse range too. I have it in the black and it gets lots of compliments.

Agapornis · 26/04/2024 09:59

I'd ask for colour and material preferences. If you have hard water, plastic and glass are an arse. Perhaps you could add a large bag of citric acid for cleaning the kettle!

My 20 something bought pink Dunelm!

20 something friend has these from The Range.

My DS bought the same but in cream. Very retro. He told me he stood and smiled at them ever morning for the first few weeks, he loved them so much! But depends whether they like retro or not.

I'd send them pics of various ones within your budget and get them to choose.

Do they do smart home stuff? I have a kettle that connects to my Alexa devices and putting it on so its hot by the time I get downstairs/ when I walk in the front door makes me happy. Also variable temp which is good for tea / coffee.

I came here to suggest this. We recently got this and everyone who has seen it has loved it!

Waspeater · 26/04/2024 10:21

Be careful about the kettle, I recently brought a cheap new one and everything tasted of melting plastic. I took it back and replaced it with a vektra vacuum kettle which I had before.

I would consider a dualit toaster or maybe ritterwerk

deste · 26/04/2024 10:49

Smeg, i always say if im burgled they can take anything but please leave my kettle and toaster. Said in jest of course.

Classic Dualit in silver?

I saw these yesterday and absolutely love them but it looks like my own Dualit kettle / toaster would survive Armageddon so I have no excuse to buy!

Hay Sowden in blue is the most beautiful toaster ever, but it sadly doesn’t toast the whole slice of bread (it’s clearly designed solely for artisanal sourdough). The kettles are a bit boring in comparison too.

That sounds cool in not the way OP meant.

smeg is mad prices and I hate the branding. Dualit is v nice and like the copper but £300 ish for both… decent value for quality and longevity probably. Alessi I don’t think I like enough and microplastics? Think they would prefer metal kettle.

Will have a look at sage but they are anti smart home stuff (no Alexa etc)

I bought a Dualit lite 2 slot toaster from Harts Of Stur for about £70 and we love it. It had a bagel function so only toasts the cut side and not the shiny outside. Also works very well for hot cross buns.
I've not bought any of their kettles as we have a gas hob whistle one, but they have several which look nice, and you can coordinate them with the toaster.

My daughter has just bought this set for her new house. She is v cool and tells me she is ‘obsessed’ with them!

oh LIKE this 2+1 slot toaster. Verrry nice. Small kitchen so going for 2 slot but this is a nice compromise and who doesn't love a toasty.
So for reasons of rhe environment which makes me ditch plastics, and longevity without mad branding, plus this toaster I think dualit classic kettle toaster combo is going to get the nod and I'm pretty sure that will meet with approval. I tried to get a steer but was just told "surprise us" so I am sure they will be met with much pleasure!

I love you nest of vipers, thank you all
