Decluttering Thread 6 - hit those targets before New Year!

So the last thread got filled up and I think I seem to have taken it on myself to start a new one every time, lol! I hope everyone finds us because I'm too lazy to tag everyone, but here's few who spring to mind. It also doesn't let me add some people, for some reason

Now it's the last push until the holidays to get it all out and done (before new cr*p comes in)

I have listed a massive girls bundle on Vinted which might be the way forward. I'm going to donate all my vinted things that have been up for over two weeks now as my ikea bag is a bit overflowing. I think if the bundle doesn't sell that will re inforce it's not worth putting too much effort into selling. I do really need space for summer bits and to pack away winter things

Pigtailsandall · 07/02/2024 12:57

Oh yeah, when we redid our bathroom and left all the old units out, a van quickly pulled up with a man asking if he could take all the metal bits. I was happy to get rid of them.

I have bought stuff - naughty. But I did donate 2 backpacks on Freecycle, plus a big art book and an etch a sketch which were all really big items. Also out a party bag of crap, plus an activity card set from one of our flights which got recycled.

Total is 215

I think my goal this year is to really keep up with maintenance decluttering, and also aiming to reduce my wardrobe by another 10-15% and the DC wardrobe by about 10%. we have some excess, but not a huge amount anymore - if I did get rid of just a few more things, our clothes could breathe better

I still have a few big items (looking at you, pram) and some sentimental items and few random bits from building work, so if I tackle those, I should be on track for 2024 items this year

Ugh, typed and lost a message, some kitchen sorting done.

225+12=237

stealthninjamum · 07/02/2024 17:13

Thanks for the comments about scrap metal men. My friend has offered to take my crap. She just leaves stuff on the pavement outside her house and apparently it usually goes that day. I have an old barbecue that belongs to exh that might go!

Not done any decluttering today although I put some charity shop bags in the car and some dead lightbulbs, batteries and bottles for recycling so my space is a bit clearer.

LivingInaBuildingSite · 07/02/2024 17:16

A few random kitchen bits collected through local eco reuse page.

237+7=244

daffodil2023 · 07/02/2024 17:52

6 items out from a quick 20 min sort out of the baking drawer. Feels like it didn't count because I didn't have a chance to wipe and clean everything in there, but they're out so it is! That means all kitchen cupboards are now done and I've only got a handful of piles of stuff to go through and then the kitchen is finished and can move onto maintenance Halo

ChampagneCommunist · 07/02/2024 21:11

Todd has given me medicine cabinet today, so am having a go; I did it a while ago, but that was more of a first pass, so more to go

ChampagneCommunist · 07/02/2024 21:18

Adverts came on TV, so did medical cabinet.
10 out.

Realfastfoodie · 08/02/2024 17:57

Aaargh I’ve fallen off the bandwagon and really not managing any decluttering the last few days. I have sold something on vinted so that will be another 1 tomorrow when the parcel is picked up. I have done some tidying and sorting so I hope that counts.

I think I’m just going to have to do another run around grabbing things to take to the charity shop…

Realfastfoodie · 08/02/2024 18:23

@ChampagneCommunist - I was surprised how much the medicine cabinet gave me second time round.

That’s pretty awesome @daffodil2023 - I think the kitchen for me is the place I get the best “value” from decluttering - everything I get rid of almost immediately seems to help me day to day!

Well done @IncessantNameChanger - bundles probably are the way to go…

@Pigtailsandall - sounds like you are doing brilliantly. Maintenance decluttering (in the areas I have got to that stage - not many!) is quite nice, it’s as much a mindset I think. I’m quite pleased when I notice I’m just chucking out something like junk mail or packaging rather than leaving it for later, or automatically shoving things in a charity bag.

Pigtailsandall · 08/02/2024 19:50

@Realfastfoodie take your time. There's no hurry and your mindset is shifting. What worked well for me was to have a charity bag and a textile recycling bag in the cupboard under the stairs. So if I saw holey socks or stained kids clothes, I had a place to put them. The bag is quite small so when it's full I take it for recycling. Similarly, if I see a book we don't want to read again or a top I no longer like, I just pop it in the charity shop bag. The charity bag is now full cause I took some vinted items off so it need to be dropped off this weekend.

Not much decluttering, very busy few days at work.
I did sell a top on vinted which was quite pricey, so happy about that; aldo out a kids activity leaflet set and party loot bag and it's contents. Total is 218

I got bathroom cabinet in Toss today, so 16 out, mainly from my make up bag.

I have come to the realisation that green and purple eyeshadow has now place in my make up bag or on my face.

IndianSummer78 · 09/02/2024 02:12

Out: one minging mascara that suddenly smelled like I didn't want it anywhere near my eyes. Total is 1869

Pigtailsandall · 09/02/2024 09:09

Finished a facial moisturiser this morning. It wasn't my favourite, but I am trying to use things up. I still have a huge stash....! But it has gone down. I'm almost embarrassed to say but in 2023 I bought almost no toiletries/beauty items, apart from the Liberty Beauty Drop, which I subscribe to. Total is 219

OP posts:
PuttingDownRoots · 09/02/2024 09:20

Out: broken toaster
In:new toaster

Doesn't really count...

DD1 reorganised the snack cupboard yesterday and removed any oit of date stuff.

ChampagneCommunist · 09/02/2024 09:57

I have 3 old pairs of glasses to take to be recycled today & I finished a mini-shower gel off this morning.

Toss has given me "tools" today. I'm going to think about it in terms of crafting tools and kitchen tools, rather than DIY.

Realfastfoodie · 09/02/2024 14:09

2 bits of makeup that were about a million years old.

Vinorosso74 · 09/02/2024 17:31

I've not checked in for a while but stuff is still going. FIL has been trying to get DP to take stuff which he's said no to!
Hoping to decorate DD's room next week so we were just looking at paint in the understairs cupboard today and have some outs. We have 6 tins of paint to go to the dump and an old Xmas tree. Haven't done a full clear out but also gone: an old waterproof of mine, some empty packaging, a knackered bag, paddling pool which has a puncture so can't pass it on and a London A-Z.

stealthninjamum · 10/02/2024 09:19

I’ve been getting stuff (charity shop, batteries, lightbulbs, bottles) out but not actually done much new decluttering. I had a load of papers in the dining room and I organised / filed / chucked them out / dealt with them eg made smear test appointment. I also pulled two Halloween crackers with dd2 that had been in my glasses cupboard for years.

im still doing 2 to 5 tasks a day from my cleaning / organising task generator and adding new tasks - the ones I never get round to doing - the other day it told me to change lightbulbs which is a job I hate doing but now you can see what you’re eating in the dining room (although that might not be a good thing!)

decluttering total is 366 but I may have forgotten a few.

Realfastfoodie · 10/02/2024 12:04

@stealthninjamum - well done. I’m doing the reverse and building up the charity / recycling piles again

IncessantNameChanger · 10/02/2024 14:50

Sold 4 things on Vinted. Made £100 on Vinted since Christmas. I keep wanting to buy dd more clothes but so far I have resisted.

Still not decided if I'm going to charity shop most of the Vinted stuff. I have two big ikea bags worth which is far too much

418 things out so far this year.

Realfastfoodie · 10/02/2024 15:31

👏well done @IncessantNameChanger! I think the advice I got here (time, money environment- is it worth it? Plus have one container and donate things that don’t go quickly) is good. If that helps.

LivingInaBuildingSite · 10/02/2024 16:51

Working/doing governor meetings/mums taxi so not been achieving much at all.
The house doesn’t look or feel like a bomb site though so not all bad.

DS2’s PIP form has arrived…

LivingDeadGirlUK · 10/02/2024 19:04

Garage is almost empty ready for measuring up next week. Managed to give away:

2 cups
A large DIY book
christmas wreath
carrier bag of clothes hangers
5 boardgames

Got a load other stuff listed hopefully will also go!

freshstartfor2024 · 11/02/2024 12:53

Hello, please could I join!
I've joined a decluttering thread on here about a year ago and didn't stick with it- although have done a lot of decluttering in fits and bursts since then! Really want my home and life sorted this year- the decluttering is mentally blocking me from getting on with a lot of things! I was on the one item a day thread, and I think that should be my target at the moment, as too much and I get overwhelmed.

I've got most of my declutter sorted into bags now, in a big pile in my daughter's bedroom. She doesn't sleep in there but I'd like to give her that corner back for toys and books to live there and leave my living room!

The main task is photographing it all, and getting it all listed somewhere for sale. I feel ebay more guarantees a sale, even if it's at 99p, but it's a faff wrapping and posting (although quite therapeutic). Facebook marketplace seems more of a gamble with the effort, but when things do go and the buyer is serious, it can be quite effortless. Although just getting on with it, would save a lot more time over debating where to list them.

I've given/donated most of the stuff which would not sell for much, and I've got two big bags of rags, which I need to take to a charity shop, but always forget whenever I go into town. I don't drive so it does need quite a bit of willpower to want to carry them with me. That could be a goal for this week coming.

I could literally get rid of everything in one fell swoop, if i just boxed it all up and let a doorstep collection take it, but I kind of need the money at the moment, and some of the things are so pretty and sentimental, that it would be nice to get something in return for them, to create more happy memories with. I'm going to aim to list one thing a day and I'm going to go and start right this second! .........
