That's it, just how often does a duvet need to be washed?

Interesting, washing has to be done in a commercial machine?

Ours all fit on my domestic machine. I wash them once a year each. I have three for different seasons.

SallyWD · 24/04/2023 10:39

Never

HeadacheEarthquake · 24/04/2023 10:40

I have nightowl coverless - once a week if or straight away if something gets spilled on it.

HisOliveTree · 24/04/2023 10:42

Never. It gets aired a couple of times a year on a sunny day.

FridayNeverHesitate · 24/04/2023 10:59

@EmmaGrundyForPM I don't think you're supposed to dry clean duvets, are you? Something about the thick padding trapping the solvents used for cleaning, so you end up breathing them in all night...

bigbluebus · 24/04/2023 11:04

The thick king size one goes to the laundrette once a year as it's too big to go in my machine. The double ones and 4.5 KS will go in my machine so get washed a couple of times a season - or in the case of DS's, when he spills coffee on it!

suzyscat · 24/04/2023 11:07

Never! They're feather and I wouldn't want to wrap myself up in something dowsed in dry cleaning chemicals at nights.

Soontobe60 · 24/04/2023 11:08

We have a lightweight duvet that’s never gets washed. We buy a new one each year and give the old one to the dog rescue place nearby.
The bedding gets changed fortnightly though - we both wear PJs in bed. When we slept with fewer clothes and had more sex we washed it weekly 😂

SeamsLegit · 24/04/2023 11:22

I always chuckle at conversations about this ... My bedding (me & hubby, cats, dog, children, outdoor clothes, SHOES) gets washed every few months. As in the pillowcases, fitted sheet and duvet cover. It amuses me how this would horrify some (most?) people! I have no issue with it, my house is lovely and tidy, I just don't feel the need to do this particular task more often 🤷

DyslexicPoster · 24/04/2023 11:23

When one of the kids wees on it....

Strangelisa · 24/04/2023 11:25

Winter duvet and summer duvets get a dry clean before they go back on the bed. Sheets every week.

Gettingbysomehow · 24/04/2023 11:26

I've got a night owl coverless duvet, it goes in the washing machine once a week and is dry in an hour on a washing line. They are brilliant.

ShagratandGorbag4ever · 24/04/2023 11:45

I have a silk filled duvet which can't be washed. It gets hung out in the sunshine occasionally.

Ours are done yearly, on a hot day as they take a while to dry. They are lower tog (between 2 - 7) and fit into the washing machine. I wouldn't wash feather ones but not a worry as I don't like to think of feathers being ripped off live birds.

The feathers are not ripped off live birds, the feathers are a waste product of the meat trade. A form of recycling as it were.

HowManySunflowers · 24/04/2023 12:25

Never

mrsbyers · 24/04/2023 12:26

Fortnightly

DrNo007 · 24/04/2023 12:29

Ours are wool filled and we wash them no more than once a year. They dry pretty quickly outside on a warm day. I have washed down and feather ones in the past but due to size they go to a commercial laundrette and are dried with tennis balls in the dryer to fluff them up.

Theoldwoman · 24/04/2023 12:30

I don’t use a duvet on our bed ( can’t stand them) but I change the DC fortnightly. Sheets get done weekly.

ScottBakula · 24/04/2023 12:50

How o earth are you lot fitting your duvet in a washing machine? There is not a hope in hell that mine would fit in .

I don't have a laundrette anywhere near me so mine gets chucked in the bath and hand washed but it's back breaking and takes days to dry .

Precisely my problem! I thought my washing machine was an ok size, but now way can my king size duvet fit in there!

I do change my bedding (duvet cover, pillowcase and fitted sheet) weekly though.

I have a 10kg washing machine plus launderette round the corner. I couldn't do it otherwise.

Loafbeginsat60 · 24/04/2023 14:10

I probably take ours to the commercial laundry about once a year but I think I should do it more often!

GarlicGrace · 24/04/2023 14:22

Once a year. They're goose down - you can wash it. Drying them's a miserable task, though, as I have no outside space. I tumble them as long as the machine will allow, then have to leave them draped over furniture for ages.

This summer, I'm thinking of taking my duvets to the park! People can think what they like about some mad woman laying out her bedding on the grass ...
