Lurpak spreadable is not butter.

British butter is delicious and not imported. HTH

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 15/03/2023 15:14

Butter dishes are for blocks of actual butter, to keep them at room temperature (and therefore spreadable) during the day. Some people keep their blocks of butter in the fridge, and put a section of it in the butter dish (especially in hot weather) so it can spread. This is what a butter dish is for, it's not meant to have a plastic tub dumped on it (where the contents are spreadable anyway therefore defeating the point).

Obviously do whatever you like, but there is definitely a Hyacinth Bucket element to plonking a plastic tub of spreadable butter in a butter dish. Just FYI!!

Surely it keeps it cleaner?

I dont find 'spreadable' butters or spreads are actually spreadable out of the fridge (and certainly not in the fridge) but that might be because we have a cold kitchen.

So I can understand why OP might want to put a tub in the dish

ZaZathecat · 15/03/2023 15:28

Obviously the op doesn't like the tub spoiling the look of the table if they've made an effort for everything to look nice.

chickywoo · 15/03/2023 15:33

Isn’t the point of a butter dish to have your butter at room temperature so it’s easy to spread? You therefore don’t need a butter dish for spreadable butter?
Why not just serve put the spreadable in a nice dish or plate if the tub offends you?

SchoolTripDrama · 15/03/2023 15:36

@BlossomOfOrange Real butter becomes spreadable if you keep it out of the fridge and in a butter dish 🧈

maddy68 · 15/03/2023 16:29

You need a butter dish. But not for spreadable. Only fir proper butter you leave out of the fridge. (and isn't processed !)

SallySailor · 15/03/2023 16:39

Lurpak is butter. Lurpak Spreadable is not ( well it's a butter/oil blend). And sorry, Lurpak or French butter any day over British butter. British butter tends to not be cultured, so - just no 😜

Wish mine would. My kitchen must be cold because the butter is sat on the side and still not soft enough BlushGrin
I say on the side, it's in the microwave at the minute so the cat can't indulge himself

anon37484291918 · 15/03/2023 17:12

I have a le creuset one but it's not as big as the large lurpack tub.

Make your own butter, tastes x1000 better.

I'm not 80.

Dont you love those little cat tongue marks!!!

Slimjimtobe · 15/03/2023 17:19

I would buy someth My like a heart shaped dish and decant a bit into it

TKmaxx would do the trick for something suitable

EggyBreads · 15/03/2023 17:27

Not wanting people to see the lurpack spreadable packet is very Hyacinth Bouquet.

You want proper butter and a butter dish. I'm not 80, I'm in my 40s!

WishIdDoneItYearsAgo · 15/03/2023 14:42

Lurpak Spreadable isn’t butter! It also needs to go in the fridge and the entire point of a butter dish is to keep your butter cool and fresh without it being so cold that it’s unusable.
I use a butter dish but I wouldn’t judge someone who chooses just to use Lurpak Spreadable. However, I’d struggle not to laugh if they put a butter dish on the table containing the entire plastic tub of Lurpak. 🤣

Which butter do you use? X

Radiohorror · 15/03/2023 17:40

I thought Lakeland used to do such a thing (but definitely get real butter anyway)

@SallySailor , You've not tried many British ones then.

Scowlette · 15/03/2023 18:24

I've got a good Lakeland one that keeps butter at the right temperature and can fit a full block in it

I like salty butter so either Kerrygold or the M&S French one with the salt crystals.

As a rule, high quality Continental butter isn’t salty enough for me in the way that Irish style butter is but I do like that M&S one from Ocado. I think some Tescos also do a very nice, very salty French one too but I’ve only seen it occasionally.

Thedishonthecoffeetable · 15/03/2023 18:51

Got a goody bag from somewhere, think it might have been a camping and caravan show and there was a tub for dairy spred/margarine in it. It was like an upside down butter dish so the deep bit at the bottom and a flat lid on top. I use butter so it was sent to the charity shop. So the op is perfectly right in thinking there is something she can buy.

WithIcePlease · 15/03/2023 19:23

@bellac11
Thank you!! I didn't realise such a thing existed or that I needed one 😂

littleducks · 15/03/2023 19:34

I think posters are talking about butter dishes that bitter sits on plate with cover over rather which would be rather like a tureen for lurpak tub. I have seen margarine dishes that while tub goes in.... The Lakeland blurb for this out of stock one even says plastic dishes aren't the prettiest things for the table
