Fascinating thread - how often do you open your windows?

Just realised today I don’t think we’ve opened ours since maybe October. Could do with doing so more regularly. Is this something others do regularly?

get confused by the people who say they have a window open permanently in winter. I assume that means you don’t use any heating, as heating on with a window open is just flushing money down the toilet?

I don't heat a room with an open window, except the bathroom if the bath towel is drying on the radiator.

The radiators have individual thermostats. All the doors are kept closed so I can air one room whilst heating the rest of the house.

I don't heat the entire house properly though. The living room radiator is turned right up whenever necessary. The other rooms on low when they're not being aired. The bathroom radiator turned up all the time because either a towel is drying or someone wants to use it soon. The bedroom radiators turned up for a short while before bed.

Overnight: windows shut, air vents open, radiators on snowflake setting and heating set at 10°C to prevent pipes freezing. I've never known the boiler to come on at 10°C so heating is effectively off.

During the day/evening heating goes on if I get cold 18-20°C, so usually from around 4.30pm.

Every day. You need to ventilate a house.

Makes me rage when I see these idiots with sad faces in the media/on TV with their mould infested walls, wet washing on airers and not one single window open/air vent open let alone sign of a dehumidifier.

Triffid1 · 11/02/2023 12:39

I am shocked at how many people don't open windows!!! Bathroom and utility room windows open pretty mich every day for a bit. Kids rooms are opened a few times a week while they are at school. Kitchen window if I'm cooking. Only the lounge windows aren't opened muchnin winter but as the door is open and closed constantly and the kitchen window it's not a big deal. And they do get opened in the morning if its a sunny day.

But then, I do.often find other people's houses quite oppressive so this is probably why.

Triffid1 · 11/02/2023 12:41

Oh, and yes, windows usually opened in morning when heating is off as obviously wide open windows and blaring heating is a waste.

Rebellious23 · 11/02/2023 12:43

Bedroom window is permanently on the vent/cracked open
Bathrooms don't have windows
Living room window open daily as the cat uses it to get in/out

Rebellious23 · 11/02/2023 12:44

Oh and spare room most days as it's my gym/peloton so I open it for cold air!
Also have a dehumidifier in the spare room for when I'm drying laundry

kimchifix · 11/02/2023 12:47

Daily, but that's to let the dogs in and out, but I leave the door open for a while mostly - unless it's raining. We usually open our bedroom windows too for a blast of fresh air. DD and older DS have theirs open pretty much daily. 11 yo bedroom window only once in a while when I'm cleaning - he is only in there to sleep & gets a blast from the other rooms.

kimchifix · 11/02/2023 12:49

For those asking about heating - Heating isn't on during the day & south facing house so it's warm from the sun. We have it on first thing and then in the evening - on a thermostat so only if temp drops.

adulthumanfemalemum · 11/02/2023 12:49

Not much in winter except the bathroom to get rid of condensation. Dh is much more likely to open windows than me, i just wouldn't think about it unless it was nice weather. I'm amazed how many have them open all the time, do you have your heating on too? One of the main reasons for keeping them shut un winter is to keep the heat in. Otherwise your heat is just spilling outside all the time.

mondaytosunday · 11/02/2023 12:51

Bathroom window every time I take a shower, then forget and the next time I go in there (before bed) it's freezing!
I have dogs do my back door is open a lot.
My bedroom window is open about once a week.

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 11/02/2023 12:51

Every morning and often I air the bedroom for 30 mins or so before bed as I love a nice cool room to sleep in!!

FenghuangHoyan · 11/02/2023 12:56

Hardly ever. We've house cats, so opening windows is not a great idea if we want to keep them like that

Maraudingmarauders · 11/02/2023 12:58

Our bedroom windows are open all night every night. Bathroom gets opened daily after showers. In the spring/summer I try to open downstairs daily, but during the winter tends to be when I'm cleaning or in advance of visitors.

Galadali · 11/02/2023 13:05

Bedroom windows are only closed when we go on holiday. Doesn't matter how many degrees below zero it goes, I can't sleep with it closed.
Kitchen and bathroom windows I open every day when cooking/washing.

Yellowcakestand · 11/02/2023 13:07

I have the small kitchen window on the latch constantly. All vents open always.
I put all upstairs windows on the latch every morning and close them on the evening.

C1N1C · 11/02/2023 13:07

Rarely... our indoor cat makes Houdini seem like an amateur.

Takox · 11/02/2023 13:08

Kitchen and bathroom every day. Bedrooms couple of times a week to air the rooms.

slowquickstep · 11/02/2023 13:10

Every window every single day for at least 20 minutes in Winter/Autumn. in Springtime they are open all day, the same in Summer unless it is really hot they are opened for half an hour early in the morning then closed along with the curtains for the rest f the day.

hettiethehare · 11/02/2023 13:11

Every day, unless it is absolutely chucking it down. I open all the bedroom windows about 3 inches before I go downstairs, and then shut them again when I head out, about 20-30 mins later.

Giggorata · 11/02/2023 13:12

Almost daily.

Goldandpurplezebra · 11/02/2023 13:15

About twice a week I will open windows for about 10 mins.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 11/02/2023 13:16

We open ours daily and have 5 house cats. A coupe of windows are open 24/7. Just use window restrictors or the cat proof mesh panels. Not a problem.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 11/02/2023 13:18

My bedroom window is open all year round. I open kitchen windows when cooking and all other windows while I'm cleaning. Can't imagine leaving windows shut for months on end!

PAFMO · 11/02/2023 13:19

Every day for at least 10-15 minutes, even if it's raining. You can really tell when people don't. It's grim.

Getir · 11/02/2023 13:25

Yay! we got a 'grim'
