Fascinating thread - how often do you open your windows?

Just realised today I don’t think we’ve opened ours since maybe October. Could do with doing so more regularly. Is this something others do regularly?

I remember reading a thread like this before and being absolutely astounded that people have their windows open all year round. I just can't imagine it, it would be freezing!

bluesky45 · 11/02/2023 13:27

Not been opened since September for most of them. It's freezing! Why would I add more cold air to the house?!

lewiscapaldi · 11/02/2023 13:27

This is like the latest Mumsnet badge of honour, isn't it? If you don't open your windows in winter you're grim and must smell. And obviously have a toilet brush

pigpinkstockings · 11/02/2023 13:27

Bathrooms and bedrooms every day!

Janbohonut · 11/02/2023 13:29

A lot but I live with a German and they are big on frisch Luft.
If we don't air out the house it also gets damp in winter from all of our cooking, showering, sweating etc.

Getir · 11/02/2023 13:30

My heating bills are high enough. I'm not about to open all my windows for all the heat to escape. I'll stay grim and warm.

Janbohonut · 11/02/2023 13:31

Also important for air quality - carpets, upholstery etc give off toxins and fresh air dilutes them.

evtheria · 11/02/2023 13:33

I do upstairs bedrooms nearly every morning for 15' or maybe longer, like school walk and back, depending on temperature. Kitchen door gets left open 10-20' also in morning while I'm eating breakfast.

Living room nothing like that, as DP has a right moan (he spends most of his leisure time at home in that room) I've given up with it.

007DoubleOSeven · 11/02/2023 13:34

Daily, even in cold weather. Bedroom windows only closed at night during the coldest winter days and also for the month of September, which I hate but I hate spiders more.

LBOCS2 · 11/02/2023 13:36

Bathroom windows are permanently open an inch or so.

All the bedroom windows are closed on the secure airing locked option at this time of year.

Kitchen window gets opened whenever we're cooking.

cabbageandgravy · 11/02/2023 13:38

If your house is draughty enough you might not feel the need to open the windows but it's a shame more windows don't have secure 'just open a crack' setting on the latch.

We are lucky enough to have a ventilation system that blows freah air into every room with the windows shut, but I like to have a crack of fresh air when I m staying anywhere else.

UseOfWeapons · 11/02/2023 13:44

Every day. It’s a Victorian house, so it needs air flow. Smells freshers, too.

Poor indoor air quality can cause or contribute to the development of infections, lung cancer and chronic lung diseases such as asthma.

But maybe you consider the desire to avoid these as just "the latest Mumsnet badge of honour".

ElaOfSalisbury · 11/02/2023 13:53

Every day.
I like fresh air in the morning once DH and children have gone to work / school / nursery.
Also in the evening after cooking to get rid of smells.

SweetPetrichor · 11/02/2023 14:03

Bedroom open every night, bathroom open during the day, everywhere else as and when required.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/02/2023 14:07

Everyday for half an hour or so, unless insanely cold - and even then I’d open the bedrooms for a bit. FRESH AIR.

2Bornot · 11/02/2023 14:09

I air out the house every day, I think its gross not to. Doesn’t your house smell of food and sweat?! Even if you all smell lovely, don’t you wanna let out the surplus carbon dioxide and let in some oxygen?

Stuffynosetime · 11/02/2023 14:09

All these threads about folks affording to heat their homes and here we have the opposite, windows open all day long and loving it Baltic 😂

And there was me thinking MN was all about the snuggling under blankets and heated throws.

What???!! I open mine daily! It would feel gross to me not to.

Getir · 11/02/2023 14:15

Gross and grim, Just need a vile now.

Thesearmsofmine · 11/02/2023 14:18

Every day unless really windy. Bathroom and our bedroom is open a crack 24/7.

kimchifix · 11/02/2023 14:18

Vile! Grin

blackearth · 11/02/2023 14:28

Don't people have trickle vents anymore?

We have one on every window panel (so living room has 4 trickle vents etc) and they are all open all year round. You can really tell the difference when they are open or closed.

I do open windows too. Especially bathrooms etc. but we are all out the house full time working so no-one home to keep rotating which room is open / closing doors / trapping heat in certain rooms etc.

Theoldwoman · 11/02/2023 14:28

I have mine open all year round. The only time I close them is during horizontal rain or when we go away.
I couldn’t imagine not opening the bedroom windows at least for part of the day, the bathroom window after showers, and I can’t sleep with windows closed.
