Fascinating thread - how often do you open your windows?

Just realised today I don’t think we’ve opened ours since maybe October. Could do with doing so more regularly. Is this something others do regularly?

We have the trickle vents open fully and the air brick covers open all the time. The windows haven’t been open for a few months other than the bathroom and kitchen windows.

WeCome1 · 11/02/2023 10:30

Bathroom, every day, rest of the house probably one window here and there every couple of days if it’s sunny or a room feels stuffy or smelly (usually with teen body spray).

bellsbuss · 11/02/2023 10:31

Every morning , I don't like that stale smell you get if when you don't air it

Happygone · 11/02/2023 10:31

Never except the bedroom one that's open all the time just a little bit.

starlingdarling · 11/02/2023 10:32

I'm similar to you OP. I open the kitchen window very occasionally while cooking. The only window that is opened regularly is the bathroom window but I close the door while it's open.

CinderellasBoot · 11/02/2023 10:37

And letting the £££££'s of heat out the house???

Not a chance!

bobbytorq · 11/02/2023 10:51

Not very often but I've dehumidifiers with Ozone, UV and Hepa filters so the air is always clean.

All windows get opened for at least 30 minutes each morning.

Same

TangledWebOfDeception · 11/02/2023 10:56

Every day.

We both love fresh air. Sleep with our bedroom window open (at least on the latch), right through winter as well. The only time we would shut our bedroom window is if there are high winds or a proper storm.

NancyJoan · 11/02/2023 10:57

The bedroom and bathroom every morning for an hour or so, and I tend to open the back doors if I’m pottering about downstairs. DS ‘s room is just starting to get that special boy smell, so I’m forever opening his.

OhLordyWhatNow · 11/02/2023 11:05

My windows are closed most of the winter.

Bathroom window opened if it's very steamy, with door closed.

Kitchen only if extractor fan not effective.

Any other window only opened for expulsion of spiders.

Entrance opened multiple times everyday to go to work or put bins out, etc. that's enough air exchange.

I want to keep precious heat in and if I want more fresh air I go outside.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 11/02/2023 11:14

Every day for a minimum of 2 hours. I love the fresh air coming in no matter how cold it is.

Sugarfair · 11/02/2023 11:16

Bedroom, bathroom and living room daily. I can’t imagine not letting fresh air into my house.

Notcontent · 11/02/2023 11:46

I get confused by the people who say they have a window open permanently in winter. I assume that means you don’t use any heating, as heating on with a window open is just flushing money down the toilet?

I open our bathroom windows after every bath/shower but close the door so it’s just that room that gets chilly. Rest of house only gets aired in winter on nice, warmer days,.

Floralnomad · 11/02/2023 11:47

Everyday in the spring /summer , very rarely in the colder weather .

borntobequiet · 11/02/2023 11:48

Not at all from November to May(ish).
The wind blows through the walls though, so the place stays fresh (and cold).

Lioney · 11/02/2023 11:52

Every day, old house with condensation.

Nannyfannybanny · 11/02/2023 11:57

Bedroom window,as soon as I am up. There is no heating on then. South facing lounge window, open when sunny. Closed when the sun goes round to the west. Heating goes on when the sun goes down.

Getir · 11/02/2023 11:58

Hardly ever in the winter.

Daily.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 11/02/2023 12:01

Daily for 10 minutes but back door is upon all day for the dog

DitzyDaffodils · 11/02/2023 12:09

Daily. I can't stand stale houses.

If it's freezing I'll have a bath last thing at night and open the living room window while I do that, then go to bed after so I'm not sitting in the cold living room. If it's nice I'll open the living room window in the morning while I get ready and potter around tidying etc.

Bedroom windows opened in the morning after everyone is up, until dusk.

Kitchen window after cooking dinner or first thing after taking bin out, for an hour or two.

Bathroom window after everyone is ready for the day for an hour or two and if my bath isn't last thing at night, after that too. I have an extractor fan so it's not the end of the world if the window isn't opened until next day.

blackearth · 11/02/2023 12:13

What are people doing with heating when doors and windows are open? Presumable turning it on AFTER the windows are shut?

RomeoOscarXrayIndigoEcho · 11/02/2023 12:18

Every day. Wide open for at least 20 minutes to get a through draught and then open locked all day if I can get away with it. Close them when heating is about to go on. Trickle vents always open.

Bathroom window open wide for a while after showers and then open locked all day.

Most windows closed at night except the one next to me (like it open locked).

That’s what I am assuming but even so, having the window open will drop the temperature inside so it will then take a lot more energy to increase the temperature back up. A bit of ventilation is good but too much cold air means your house will either be freezing or you will be spending ££££.
