The great post Christmas declutter and clean!

I know it’s only Boxing Day, but I am trying to get motivated to do some tidying up as I have a few hours spare today. My house is very small so even a few extra new things mean that other things have to go. There is also wrapping paper everywhere and the kitchen is a bit of a disaster…

Our decorations come down on NYD , we have no tree ( the cats made it perfectly clear on their 1st /2nd Christmases with us that they would climb, chew and sabotague our tree -prelit fake with no baubles )

I did a big clothes declutter in May when we did the bedroom, and a kithen declutter end Nov.

I bought some white serving dishes for nice dinners when we set the table , I get a chance to use them tomorrow .

Sorted out the kitchen storage tubs /glass oven dishes .

I have a random glass lid for a pot that I have no clue what it fits . So I'll try it on everything and if there's no match , it can go .

Sorted through bedding and towels today , found a load of those hair rurbie towels so result Xmas Grin

I hoovered and mopped the whole house. Decluttered some sandals and tuperware.

Then got distracted and made 2 cakes and some bread 🤦‍♀️ creating more washing up...

I'm starting today. First job is to de-Christmas the house and I'll sort the Christmas stuff as I do that. Then, I'm going to do room by room and decorate as I go. It's going to be a long project but hopefully by the end of 2023 I'll have the house as I want it 😊

BrewandBiscuit · 01/01/2023 08:48

Happy New Year!

Are any of your superstitious? Will you be cleaning or decluttering today?

My plan too, good luck.

Dh is sorting his office out today, it's become a dumping ground so needs a declutter and deep clean. AlI the rooms need a good airing, dusting and good clean.

I'm going through my wardrobe and getting rid of unwanted items, it's mainly tatty clothes falling apart. I've bought new work clothes so I need to make space for it all.

Then the next few days will be spent getting ready for the start of term and work. I did batch cooking yesterday and need to do more for the freezer.

Majorityofthree23 · 01/01/2023 11:59

Christmas decorations down! Now need to put them away.....

devildeepbluesea · 01/01/2023 13:48

I’m in!! Been on it like a bonnet since the 27th. I have done:

Fridge
3 kitchen cupboards
Decluttered glassware
2 big storage drawers
Booze cupboard
1 set of living room shelves and got rid of stacks of books

1 more set of shelves and a storage unit still to do downstairs, then it’s on to upstairs.

devildeepbluesea · 01/01/2023 13:49

Oh and I chopped up my tree this morning too.

Greenshake · 01/01/2023 13:52

Tree and decorations down and packed away, dishwasher and washing machine on, hoovered everywhere and bagged up stuff for the charity shop and the tip.

There's a thread on Chat about the DH putting a load of washing on and hanging it out ( Hell In A Handcart , I tell ya !)

I did laundry yesterday , no cleaning today but I'm going to start in dinner in a while .

I have 2 bags of household stuff to go to Charity Shop .
The decorations will come down today and probably in the loft tomorrow .

cleanasawhistle · 01/01/2023 14:27

We started last night after tea.
Open plan kitchen ,living room, diner.....and only room with Christmas stuff.
I washed all pots and cleaned oven and hob.
Cleaned inside some cupboards and moved stuff that was in wrong place.
Tidied fridge, checked dates and quick wipe.
Washed all cupboard doors and all work tops.

OH took everything that didnt belong in the room upstairs to spare room.
Brought down boxes and starting taking Xmas stuff /tree down.
Took all that up to spare room.

We then brushed floors,moved furniture,
Wiped everything down and moped floors.

So one lovely clean organised room.....shut the door on the upstairs spare room that is now full of stuff lol

Great thread! This will help keep me motivated to clean/tidy up. We pretty much live a minimalist lifestyle already and only have the things in the house that we need. But between birthdays and Christmas, an end-of-the-year purge is needed!

Hosted Christmas this year so the house was messy!

Cleaned up the kitchen and took out loads for recycling.

Put the furniture back in their proper places. Hoovered and dusted.

Took the tree, ornaments and star down. Took the decorations and stockings down. Packed everything up in the garage.

Did a big declutter of DC’s toys and wardrobe.

Next up, decluttering the garage. I will wait till the kids are back in school before attempting this.

Whoever mentioned the January apartment cure thingy; thanks! I got my first email today to say to do a quick declutter of a drawer. I've just gone through my underwear, socks and lounge/sports wear drawers and I feel weirdly happy about it.

Love a declutter and it's definitely handy having the email prompt

gingercat02 · 02/01/2023 15:09

Started today (no washing/cleaning on NYD).
We are moving DS into a bigger room and making his the spare. Current spare emptied and being painted now.
While the vacuum cleaner was upstairs I have done all the bedrooms.
3rd load of washing on.

Once DS is relocated we can get rid of a tonne of books, clothes, soft toys and general child crap that he won't want in his new teen room.

Fridge and freezer cleaned and sorted on NYE before the online shop came.

Need to do a list for tomorrow 🤔

devildeepbluesea · 02/01/2023 17:36

Since yesterday I’ve finished the living room and got rid of a huge load of books and DVDs (mostly via the local reuse page) - the remainder will go to charity shop tomorrow.

I’ve also got rid of all the crap in the bathroom and my bedroom.

Left to do: spare room (this will be a biggie)
Storage unit on the landing. Also hoping to get rid of the unit itself, but that may be a step too far.

Wond3rment · 02/01/2023 22:21

Progress has slowed here and we’re back to work in the morning.

I do have a list and will work through it this month. Bought a lovely storage unit for the kids shower room in TKMaxx on Saturday so that will help with storing whatever is left after the declutter of that room.

Christmas trees still up but all other decorations have been taken down and boxed up. I didn’t want to have no sense of Christmas left on our last night of holiday so they will be down by Friday night.

MushMonster · 03/01/2023 09:32

Back after a little NY break!
I love reading others' progress, it is very encouraging!
Kitchen only needs painting the walls and decluttering the wine racks (which we use for storage rather than wine lol). Very happy about the declutter in the kitchen and organising the cupboards. We got lots of space now.
Next room is the bathroom. Just needs a little tidying up, most of it the organising was done last year (around Easter) and remained so. But we need to change the bath panel. We will be doing a bit of DIY.
And getting our room ready for wallpaper and new bed, which is arriving today.
I am very happy about how the house is looking.
Really looking forward to finish and see al
l the rooms fresh and free of boxes!

MushMonster · 03/01/2023 20:45

Another day done!
Tomorrow is my last full on day. The rest of the holidays will be cleaning a bit at a time.
Lots of laundry done today. At least all bedding and curtains are done now. Have some teddies and school clothes to wash.
We have done half the wardrobe clearance today. To be finished throughout the week.
How are all getting along?

silentpool · 03/01/2023 21:37

I had gone through the linen closet so took some tatty sheets round to be recycled.

I actually realised yesterday that I don't have too much left to declutter - it's only really some clothes that need to reach the end of their lifespan and then going forward, I'm buying much less

I plan to get the steam cleaner out later to clean the grout in the kitchen.

Otherwise I plan to use up my toiletry and cleaning product stash and then buy much less going forward - so my cupboards are not full.

gingercat02 · 04/01/2023 11:03

Took the tree and decs down yesterday. A bit early for us but the tree was totally dead. So that's Christmas packed away until December.
Living room, hall and landing all thoroughly cleaned.
DS has started packing up his bedroom.
Need to finish painting today so that will take priority.
DH and I are having a date day tomorrow so did the declutter 😂

gingercat02 · 04/01/2023 11:04

*sod the declutter! Cinema and dinner will be much more fun.
