The great post Christmas declutter and clean!

I know it’s only Boxing Day, but I am trying to get motivated to do some tidying up as I have a few hours spare today. My house is very small so even a few extra new things mean that other things have to go. There is also wrapping paper everywhere and the kitchen is a bit of a disaster…

Today I need to buy food, pick up a prescription, change at least our bed (plus the DCs if I feel motivated), clean 2 bathrooms plus guest toilet, set off robot Hoover (so get DC to clear the floor) and make some bread.

I also want to declutter the xmas decorations but I'm not sure I'll have time as I also need to do things with the DC and MIL (who is on day 14 of a 30 day visit 😮)

RocketIceLollie · 27/12/2022 10:31

@invincible assign your mil a bathroom to clean 👍😁

InvincibleInvisibility · 27/12/2022 13:01

Haha. no way. She's 84! She does her bedroom and bathroom and the ironing.

If she could just get her own lunch Id be happy! (She lives alone with no help whatsoever so is perfectly capable but expects me to wait on her)

Ive cleaned the bathrooms and done the shopping. Next will be some decluttering as a reward 😀

Mumstheword2022 · 27/12/2022 13:24

Hey all

did the living room earlier while watching Neverending Story! 🤣

tree down and Christmas gone ( have left the rest up) dusted, cleaned the inside of the windows, blinds quickly, around the woodburner and hoovered

we are going away for a couple of days and I don’t fancy doing it just before I go back to work.

need to change the bed really but washing machine on second load and it’ll just sit on waiting for me.

locketrocket · 27/12/2022 13:27

I'm in too.

Could anyone recommend some good storage ideas for the Christmas decorations please? Fed up of using random boxes!

If anyone is looking to do a bigger declutter, I'd recommend Apartment Therapy's January Cure, for a few weeks of decluttering tasks to tackle.

Thanks for this - I've signed up!

I use the plastic lidded ones from The Range or B&M.
Usually the 32 or 48 litre ones. They stack well, I can see what's inside them and can categorise the contents across the boxes.

kittykatrawks · 27/12/2022 13:42

I'm in as well. I've got lots of boxes and some labels. Cardboard boxes for decluttering and taking to the charity shop.

Thankfully I've had a lot of edibles this Christmas so not lots of items to clutter.

I'm so busy but I'm already itching to get started.

InvincibleInvisibility · 27/12/2022 13:42

I need to buy some storage boxes for decorations too.

Ive just decluttered half a bin bag of decorations. Not bad considering I threw away 2 bin bags in the summer before we moved. I think i could be more ruthless but haven't the heart right now. Especially as its mainly baubles we like and use - its just that DH bought a 100 bauble tub 15 years ago but we obviously don't put that many on the tree at one time. But Im stuck in the mindset of "what if/when several break (as they have before) and Ive thrown away the others "

Took sheets of our bed but havent put fresh ones on yet or set off the washing machine 🤦‍♀️ Thats next on my list!

fizzyfood · 27/12/2022 17:26

Would love to take tree and decorations down but my family wouldn't like it. I've given the kitchen a tidy and got rid of the rubbish as it's bin day tomorrow.

locketrocket · 27/12/2022 18:49

Storage boxes have been purchased (thanks @cataline ) Will leave the tree up, but everything else coming down tonight

belowfrozen · 27/12/2022 19:01

I always start today after a total day of rest on Boxing Day. Bags of charity shop stuff building and kids rooms tackled

BrewandBiscuit · 27/12/2022 20:06

Im in. I love a good decluttering session but I’ve been unwell recently so things have slipped.

ordinarily, I’d have Christmas down by now but I’ve enjoyed this Christmas so much I don’t want it to end!

upstairs and the kitchen are looking ok but the living room is a bit cluttered with toys etc. I basically need a bigger house!

generalh · 27/12/2022 20:18

Doing mine NYD as we are away next week. Want to come home to a decluttered house. Have made a list and everything! 🤣

Mogloveseggs · 27/12/2022 20:29

Ooh I'm in. It will be a gradual process throughout the rest of the year and January as need to pack up dds room for Ds to move into as well and decorate it.
tomorrow I'll take the cards down and sort the piles of washing.

MushMonster · 27/12/2022 21:04

Started decluttering my DDs room. It is goingvto have a huge redecor and re-arrangement.
Already got some bits for charity.

My tree is up and will stay there till after New Year. Why do you take it down so quickly?

MushMonster · 27/12/2022 21:06

Tomorrow is: more laundry (3 loads!), finishing the decluttering, painting the room and re-arranging everything back.

Jasmino1o · 27/12/2022 21:08

I’ve filled the car up with everything that needs to go to the recycling centre tomorrow!

I have also gone slightly overboard, rearranged the whole dining room to make a little more space. Once the tree is down, possibly tomorrow, I’m rearranging the lounge too 🙈 I have also ordered a new rug and coffee table because our current coffee table gets filled with unnecessary stuff on the bottom shelf so have ordered one without a shelf!

Kitchen is all tidied and everything from Christmas kept away. But DD’s bedroom is a right mess!! But I might wait until she is back in school before I tackle that one! She’s only 3 so can’t expect her to do it properly!

SwimmingFree · 27/12/2022 21:52

I spent the whole day decluttering the kids rooms and the spare room. We have guests coming for Hogmanay.

I was listening to a new Jodi Picoult audiobook and have been enjoying that so it kept me motivated.

socksandvests · 28/12/2022 00:01

Well thanks to this thread I have just moved my fat ass off the sofa and decluttered the DS's computer room.

I've got two full bags of rubbish, a bag for the charity shop and also found a bag of gifts he had forgotten he'd been given which included a £50 note!

He was chuffed to bits!

Tomorrow I'm going to go through all the Christmas ornaments that didn't get put out this year - charity shop most of them and then take the tree down and pack away all the baubles 😀
Then I have to dig a big hole and plant my Christmas tree in (or at least put it in a big plant pot until it stops torrential raining)

I'm going to leave a few christmasy bits out as we have guests coming so will pack away the rest of them at the weekend.

Then I might even get a ladder out and tackle the huge cobwebs that kept catching my eye when we were eating our Christmas dinner grrrrr

Wond3rment · 28/12/2022 09:11

Definitely joining you! I will do 90 mins of decluttering this morning, focusing on our bedroom. Lots to do, have my next audiobook set up to listen to and am looking forward to it!

Thanks @SkylightSkylight I am going to look her up-will report back to the thread

I love Dana K White- am working through her podcasts and implementing some ideas

TheChippendenSpook · 28/12/2022 09:30

I had a friend coming over today so got up early to start tidying properly. She's not well now so isn't coming over so instead of getting in with it, I've gone back to bed.

FlamingJingleBells · 28/12/2022 09:45

Going to declutter my wardrobe because I have got some sale items coming.

1 bag of extra Christmas treats to drop off at the Foodbank because I can't eat anymore & somebody can enjoy them while they're still in date.

I've already deep cleaned the kitchen and bathroom and organised my linen cupboard.

Need to deep clean the living room before New Year's day.

BrewandBiscuit · 28/12/2022 09:53

I’m fixing things today. Lots of annoying little things that need fixing so working on those
