I know it’s only Boxing Day, but I am trying to get motivated to do some tidying up as I have a few hours spare today. My house is very small so even a few extra new things mean that other things have to go. There is also wrapping paper everywhere and the kitchen is a bit of a disaster…

Well I got up (again) and took the tree down. I w also cleaned and tidied everywhere and feel much better for it.

The ironing can wait until tomorrow!

socksandvests · 28/12/2022 16:15

The tree is down and (most) of the needles have been hovered up 😁

Any tips for sorting paperwork or kitchen cupboards?

Ooh i love a paperwork sort.
Best thing to do is put it into piles on the floor or a big table.
Do piles like
Car
House
Medical
Work
Then take one pile and divide it again.
Car for instance
Tax
Insurance
MOT
V5

House
Insurance
Banks
Warranties
Receipts for big items

Then go through each pile and throw anything thats out of date or irrelevant

Get yourself a concertina file, file in order making sure to label each section and voila

I hope that helps :)

As for kitchen cupboards. Do one at. time.
Empty it out, clean it and whilst its drying, get rid of anything out of date (and unusable), anything broken or chipped, unwanted or that belongs somewhere else. When you are refilling it check the other cupboards for anything that belongs in this cupboard.

I've done most of the washing and ironing today and have finally given up on my rubbish iron. I've thrown it out and bought a new one!

I've also thrown out a very worn and old dressing gown (only about 3 years later than it should have gone in the bin!) plus a bag of stuff from a bedroom cupboard.

InvincibleInvisibility · 28/12/2022 20:57

Ive decluttered some more random things that we just wont miss (like scratching pads for the cat who hasn't touched them in 6 months...).

Have also cleaned the baking cupboard and identified 4 books that DC2 really won't ever read so will give to the school

MushMonster · 28/12/2022 22:31

Hi, all going well I see! You have all done lots today!
I started the day cleaning kitchen and entrance corridor, dining room.
Then another 3 loads of laundry. I still have two to get dried! That will keep me busy tomorrow! I was left with one more, a large bed cover, but after decluttering my DD's room, I got a new pile of laundry😭😭Back to square 1.
We did declutter most of her room. Moved the furniture and painted the wall.
Tomorrow we have to clean her floor and finish arranging new places for a few things, not much.
I need to take a whole car full of things to the local tip (they also distribute items to charity)
Then clean the cupboard under the sink! Oh, I hate that one 😥
If I have any time left, it will be the pots and pans cupboard next.

Mogloveseggs · 29/12/2022 10:53

Right only got a couple of hours today so need to prioritise.
Everything that isn't Christmas tree down and in boxes ready to go back in the loft.
Sort basket on bathroom windowsill and get rid of rubbish.
Clean bathroom.
Clean loo.
Clothes away.

BrewandBiscuit · 29/12/2022 14:14

I had big plans today but have just ended up with a grumpy, stroppy and bored 4yo so I’m getting nowhere. I aim to get a carrier bag of stuff out the house at some point today and get all the Christmas toys upstairs and from under my feet

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 29/12/2022 14:18

Feeling rotten with lingering Covid after effects, but have been able to sit down and go through paperwork and now have a six inch pile ready for shredding. I just have to finish drinking the wine in the wine box so I have the empty box to put he shredded paper in as per the council’s recycling requirements. So that’s tonight’s task. 😉🥂

So far, so good.

1.Our Master bedroom is done
2.First trip to the clothes recycling centre done

Tomorrow is the Utility Room and Boot Cupboard. Weirdly I can’t wait 😁

MushMonster · 29/12/2022 19:37

Still going! But a bit less productive than expected today...
No appointment for the recycling centre today. I got the appointment for Sat.
DD room is done.
Laundry put away.
Now I got DD laundry pile to sort!
Cupboard inder the sink still not done, but I am leaving it till tomorrow.
I ordered some boxes to help with the tidying up of wardrobes and kitchen.
Old things to keep are up in the attic.

Tomorrow:
Change toilet seat to the new one.
Clean cupboard under the sink
Pots and pans cupboard
Sort the pantry, to be completed when the boxes arrive.
Going shopping for new cleaning supplies.

InvincibleInvisibility · 29/12/2022 20:41

I was motivated to take down Christmas decorations today but got side tracked by a film (never watch them usually but everyone was occupied for once so I could)
Have thrown away an old purse though 👍🤣

EricNorthmanYesPlease · 29/12/2022 21:41

Thanks for this thread its made me really motivated.

Yesterday and today ive done 5 loads of washing.
Put all the Christmas stuff into the loft and sorted through what i didnt put out.
Decluttered all bedrooms of clothes that dont fit, any items no longer wanted/needed, moved into my bedside tables finally and made a jobs list for upstairs.
Ive got a pile ready for charity (tomorrow)
All the christmas returns/exchanges ready to go
Did a big toiletries shop that should last the year, and it only cost £1.53 as i had a voucher to use.
Ive spent one of my xmas vouchers on myself for a change as usually it goes on DD but she doesnt need anything
Moved into a new purse and handbag - surprisingly threw loads out of my purse!
Sorted all the recycling out
Cleaned the kitchen
AND
Emptied the front of my car.and booked a valet for tuesday.

Over the weekend
I will have to sort the rest of the car
Pushchair needs a deep clean
Boot liner needs a wash
Spruce up the child car seat
Wash door mat and trainers
Washing machine needs a cleaninh cycle

Im proud of myself today as i didnt plan on doing it!

BrewandBiscuit · 30/12/2022 09:19

Today is a laundry and take down Christmas Day. I think I’ll actually miss my tree!

silentpool · 30/12/2022 09:37

I've sorted out the pantry.
Gone through the linen closet and have some sheets to send to recycling.
I've some clothes to take to the charity shop.
I went through the kitchen junk drawer and tidied that.
I've got some electronic bits and pieces and cords to either donate or take for recycling.
As the new year goes on, my plan is to use up toiletries, cleaning products etc and just buy less of them going forward.

MajorityofThree · 30/12/2022 11:57

Five bags of clothes out of DS's room (he's a complete magpie). Heading straight to charity shop so he doesn't change his mind.

Wond3rment · 30/12/2022 17:56

The done list is growing nicely:

1.Our Master bedroom is done

2.First trip to the clothes recycling centre done

3.Utility Room and Boot Cupboard done

4.DS wardrobe and chest of drawers done

Tomorrow will be a smaller job of the Larder.

InvincibleInvisibility · 30/12/2022 19:00

Well done everyone .

Ive tidied away the Christmas decorations and dusted. Thanks to decluttering its all in just 2 boxes. Ive freed up a box which is now under the sink with everything tidy .

I was pleased. Until dh and dC came home and none of them could see any difference! None of them spotted that the decorations has been tidied away 😡

IET · 30/12/2022 19:15

I've cleared out my wardrobe today and put away things which don't fit or don't get worn at the minute. I can't bring myself to part with them yet, so I'm doing the wuss version of decluttering where I just put them in storage as a sort of halfway house before I eventually get rid of them.

I need to get rid of lots of toys which have bits missing as well. That's my plan for tomorrow

IET · 30/12/2022 19:16

@InvincibleInvisibility that's so annoying! How do they not notice? I think mine would be the same though

InvincibleInvisibility · 30/12/2022 20:32

To be fair the Christmas tree is a tiny fake one (borrowed off MIL last year when we got a kitten) and where I was sitting I was blocking DH's view. BUT that doesn't explain the rest!

My 11 year old did identify that id tidied but took ages to work out what was missing.
