May the Fledglings Fly with you

Hello everyone, and welcome to the May Flylady thread! I have shamelessly copied the OP from the April thread, thank you Sing Flowers

We welcome newbies and returnees - if you are curious about the system feel free to ask questions or lurk! We do follow it, erm, loosely to say the least. So there is a lot of chat about random life stuff as well as housework, decluttering and organising.

A key element of flylady is not being a perfectionist!
I don’t think the regulars would mind me saying that most of us here are not naturals at housekeeping etc, so please don’t feel we are some intimidating group who demand perfectly shined sinks. We are human. We fall off the wagon. We commiserate and help each other climb back on, and we stock the virtual naughty corner with snacks and blankets for the days when adulting is just too hard.

So, the system:
🔹Some baby steps which are designed to help you build up a routine.
🔹Daily missions to help with sprucing up particular areas in the zones, for example the first zone of the month is the entry/porch and dining room if you have one.
🔹Try and do 15 minutes decluttering a day. It didn’t get cluttered in a week so it will take a lot longer to clear it!
🔹Daily focuses to help shape the week.
🔹Here on the thread many of us post to do lists, but also “ta da” lists of things we’ve achieved that day.
🔹We also recommend the Power of Three technique - if you’re overwhelmed with too much to do, just pick three things and don’t think about the rest.

Anyway, I will post some links each day (hopefully) but whether you follow the system or not - many of us just take the bits we like or build our own flylady style system to suit our own lives - do join in if you want a place to chat about keeping a house and family running!

EspeciallyDistracted · 18/05/2022 20:03

Evening all,

Sorry I didn’t get on to post links this morning, I am leaving a bit early to make doubly sure DD gets to school on time for her exams in the mornings at the moment. Going OK so far but she is anxious about History tomorrow, she desperately wants to do well in it and says there is a huge amount to remember.

The link to the Flight Plan updates overnight so if I haven’t managed to post you can always scroll back to the day before and click through from there. It also has “yesterday” and “tomorrow” options.

I don’t seem to be have much on my Tada! lists at the moment, my brain seems to be going blank by the evening. We are keeping on top of things though. I went off-zone a couple of days ago and decluttered my dressing table. And then to my delight I have just clicked on “tomorrow” and found the mission is to chuck out old make-up and toiletries so I am ahead for once Smile.

Ed- goodluck to your dd - exams are tough times on all the family.

Ditzy- thanks that good to try.

Bean- art gallery sounds lovely.

Willow- hope your dd is ok and your tin hat helped. Thats a good list.

Currently my world is like a washing machine at the moment. Words were crossed about the state of the kitchen. 'D'h is lucky that the thread 'spade' was not in my hand.
I decluttered the clutter that has been hanging around the kitchen for months. And sorted out new pyrex casserole dishes to put supper in every night. There will be a dish and salad. Fraggles have been told choose something you like if not, bread/butter/toast it is. After ds floods of tears(illness/exhusted.) He undestood and toast it was. Got my happy son back after he had some food.

Are hills and zoo ok?

GreenWillowAndCatkins · 19/05/2022 08:49

Good luck to all exam people!

I suspect zoo and hills have fallen foul of the new platform, but I hope they're both ok too @Dancingtomusic .

This morning has started well with WillowHound spilling my tea on the arm of the sofa and the doctors' surgery telling me off for booking The Wrong Sort Of Appointment before they'd even opened . I should not have booked the available appt with the duty doctor, that is for medical emergencies only. It says nothing about this on the website, but I presume we are all meant to be telepathic now. So I have an appointment with the minor illness nurse, who is going to take one look at my pulmonary embolism history from last year and refuse to deal with me. Yippee.

Ta da:
❤️ Dog walk.

🕳️ All The Things (that a black hole, for reference)

EspeciallyDistracted · 19/05/2022 13:31

The thread is quiet isn’t it, I cannot believe what a shocking mess MN have made of their site. I’m not having too many specific problems, but there are a lot of niggles and changes that are not to my liking.

Full day off at home today, first time in absolutely ages. Picked DD up again after her exam at 10.30 and we went to Sainsbos to get some food for lunch, then home and she is busy revising and I have been doing jobs that need doing (a bit of decluttering, a bit of tidying and a bit of paperwork. Off outside in a mo to finally tackle my car, then I will be going to the allotment.

OP posts:
Dancingtomusic · 19/05/2022 21:27

Ed- weldone to your dd for gettinh her head down and revising. Your allotment sounds like a lovely place to go.

Willow- hope you get seen by the correct person!

Goodluck all exam people.

Well I am off my course. I will miss my tutor - she was blooming superb!

Dancingtomusic · 19/05/2022 21:28

Bean- how was the art gallery? I miss art galleries.

BeanAnTae · 19/05/2022 21:54

It was lovely - and very quiet. I didn't stop for coffee there - instead I went to a bookstore and bought Stephen Fry's retelling of Troy for Ds. I had a fruit tea there and a sandwich.

BeanAnTae · 19/05/2022 21:55

How are your little fraggles dancing? And how many fraggles at Fraggle rock?

BeanAnTae · 19/05/2022 21:57

Waves to Ditzy, ED and Willow 😁

DitzyBluebells · 19/05/2022 22:06

ED a lot of people on other threads saying similar things. I hope Mumsnet haven't accidentally killed the forum. Another forum I was on made changes and died never to recover.

Willow that sounds so stressful at your doctor's.

I'm liking your system for the evening food Dancing, very organized and stress free (now they all understand!). Well done on the decluttering too.

I also like your meal system Dancing. DD is going through a picky phase at the minute. I’ve found we have the best success with saying “fine, you don’t have to eat any of it, but you do have to come and sit at the table with us to chat”. Then we don’t comment when she starts digging in Grin

sounds like you’ve been very productive Ditzy.

Did the nurse see you Willow? And was she any help?

I had a friend I haven’t seen in ages visit yesterday morning. It meant downstairs got an extra home bleurgh and it was all done my 10am and once she’d left I felt like I could just relax in it. I could do with sweeping the floors again already today, and should do a bit more zone cleaning in the bathroom, but have no motivation to do either this morning. DH has gone away with friends for the weekend so my main aim for the next 3 days is everyone fed no one dead.

Dancingtomusic · 20/05/2022 10:07

Up- everyone fed - no one dead is a good aim to have with a little baby.

Ditzy- thanks

Bean- I have 2 fraggles a 5yr old and 7yrold.

Thanks for saying you like my supper idea.
Big changes need to happen here to make the next life stage possible. I dont see why as a woman I have to give up my working life because my other half doesnt want to clean or lift a finger.

🏖Adults turn to be ill here- sigh.

Tadas today-
🏖sainbo shopping done at 8.30am it was soo lovely a quiet- summer school dresses for dd, reduced workout wear -(that might be a laugh seeing myself in skin tight lycra stuff- nude colour- why bloody nude?) Who needs to see that?!

🏖small food shop
🏖new duvets
🏖breakfast
🏖start decluttering sitting room or dining room.
🏖must complete it all by monday- so I will get a chance at a normal life here.

Its so quiet here. Mumnet is slow on my phone. It used to be so speedy to drop a message and run.

BeanAnTae · 20/05/2022 12:55

I ❤️ your supper system Dancing. I also recommend a snacky dinner of leftovers and cheese and cold cuts.

EspeciallyDistracted · 20/05/2022 13:21

Afternoon all <trails in late again>

MN even more annoying today with the constant cookie messages.

Here is today’s set of links flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=-60

Today’s mission is to scrub round the taps in your bathroom. It is also declutter your bag and car day - I did the car yesterday and my bag earlier in the week, first time in ages for both but at least I fell ahead today.

Busy morning, dropped DD at school, stayed for PTA coffee morning, went and did the weekly food shop, dumped it at home, chopped down a significant amount of a shrub (no birds nests were disturbed), filled the car with it, picked DD up after her exam, came home via tip, put away shopping, had lunch, been pootling on the internet for the last half hour.

The sun has come out, it rained all morning and I got pretty wet during shrub cutting even though it only took 10 mins (had to do it or miss my tip slot, you can’t book them on the same day).

Off out for a bit of non-food shopping now, then got to go and do a bit of PTA stuff at DS’s school, pick him up, pick up DD’s newly altered prom dress, do my yoga class and then my PT session at the gym.

BloomingHazel · 20/05/2022 17:59

I had stated to type a message yesterday, got busy at work, then backed out of it, losing my post! Oh well.
I've been busy at home and work this week, but kept reading along with the thread.

Monday I worked my main job (10 hrs) then ate at home real quick before heading to my 2nd job (3 hrs) so that was a full and tiring day.
Tuesday I got a lot done:
🌺 both bathrooms bleached & deep cleaned (using a toothbrush around the taps, inspired by someone on this thread - I forgot who now!)
🌺 3 LOLs (bedding & towels)
🌺 flowers planted in the ground & in pots
🌺 return sent off to Amazon
🌺 Skyped mum
🌺 DH breakfast cooked for the week
🌺 grocery pickup order placed, picked up & put away

Wednesday I worked all day then made frosting for cupcakes I pulled out of the freezer (birthdays at work)
Thursday I relaxed after work
No flying today either after work, although DS will do a home bleugh as his chores for today, as well as mowing the grass

I work tomorrow so not sure what I'll get done, but I'm home all day on Sunday.

BloomingHazel · 20/05/2022 18:46

Sorry for the typos above, I didn't want to lose my post again.
ED I really need to clean my car again. Our dog made a mess of my passenger window 🙄
dancing Hopefully your DP will step up and do more, as he should. I'm with you on believing that just because you have a penis, doesn't mean you can't clean or do any other housework!
Sorry I haven't mentioned everyone 🍒👋 to you all!

EspeciallyDistracted · 21/05/2022 10:23

I have cleared all my cookies and MN is behaving a bit better for me now.

Hazel - I am in awe of you working 10 hours in one job and then going onto 3 hours in another.

Hope everyone else is OK, the thread has gone very quiet.

I have had a lazy morning, Saturday is the only day I get a lie-in, so I did, have just had breakfast in the garden and am about to get dressed and go to the allotment (the plants have enjoyed all the recent rain but so have the weeds). Back later

OP posts:
GreenWillowAndCatkins · 21/05/2022 11:15

Morning! I think MN have actually killed this thread, which is a real shame. It's so tedious to post now and the mobile site jumps about on my phone screen so I end up in the wrong places 🤬.

I did get seen by the nurse in the end, thanks to whoever asked. She put me on massive dose of steroids, which made me dangerous (not noticing things, overreacting to anything I did notice, racing heart, shaky etc) so the doctor took me off them again yesterday after we concluded that a heart rate of 127 while sitting drinking tea was probably not optimal. I am having a very quiet weekend.

Nonetheless, I have read the decluttering thread that I used to be on (until I fell ovv spectacularly) and been inspired to clean the kitchen and mop the floor.

StillUp · 21/05/2022 11:29

I think it was me who did the toothbrush on the taps Hazel. Glad to have inspired you, however I peaked there and the bathroom hasn’t seen much more cleaning action for the rest of the week.

Yes that heart rate does not sound very resting Willow! The thread has certainly quietened down but hopefully we’ll keep plodding on. I’m not having any trouble posting now at all <touches wood>

You deserve a lazy morning after all
you did yesterday ED.

TaDas:
erm… we are all clean and dressed and fed. There’s some washing on the line and the dishes are done. That’ll do. Soft play this afternoon. I’d prefer a beer garden but hey ho.

BloomingHazel · 21/05/2022 14:54

willow racing heart rate and being dangerous sounds scary! I'm glad your doctor saw sense and took you off the steroids. I do hope you get to enjoy a relaxing weekend.
ED that sounds like a lovely start to your weekend. I still need to clean the cushions that go on the swing so we can use it, although I have to figure out where I can hang them up outside to dry completely. Drinking coffee whist sitting on the swing really is a lovely way to start the day.
Up a beer garden sounds fab, I'll have to agree I enjoy that a lot more than soft play!

It's still a little cool here, yesterday felt like winter with the wind and there was a frost warning for this morning. Luckily it looks like all my plants survived and no frost in sight!

We went to a BBQ last night (was freezing 🥶) so no flying was done. I will need to start getting ready to go to work (2nd job) the day goes by fast there so should be back home before I know it.
I really hope things settle down with mumsnet, I'm not having any problems posting anymore, and keep myself logged in. However, I use the mobile site, not the app or a computer, so not sure if that's got something to do with it 🤷‍♀️
It would be nice to hear from others zoo, hills, Red, that, Sing and more (but names aren't coming to me right now)
Alright, time to peel myself off the couch 🍒👋 for everyone

EspeciallyDistracted · 21/05/2022 15:04

Hazel we have had a swing seat with cushions for a few years, and they live in the shed when not in use, if they get wet we put them on the rotary washing line (ours can be lowered to waist height). But it’s a pain. I love the seat so much though. We have just added a sofa and chair set with cushions and got them wet a couple of times so this weekend’s job is putting in one of those big plastic storage boxes for them, they have spend a lot of time shuttling between the washing line and being stacked up under the parasol the last couple of weeks as we have had some heavy downpours after several weeks of no rain. DH has just gone out to buy some concrete slabs for the box to stand on.

OP posts:
BloomingHazel · 22/05/2022 06:18

I got home from work to find handwash dishes done, DH had replaced a tap in one of the bathrooms, the other tap still need to be replaced. Under cabinet sockets had been installed and a few things rearranged as discussed. We now have more counter space in the kitchen!
I put out a couple of hotspots and changed out the tablecloth on the dining room table. A couple of friends/ coworkers stopped by today to look at installing a sprinkler system in the back garden so we won't have to do it manually.

We spent the evening at my ILs and now I'm falling asleep 😴
I'm just glad that most of the housework is done.
