May the Fledglings Fly with you

Hello everyone, and welcome to the May Flylady thread! I have shamelessly copied the OP from the April thread, thank you Sing Flowers

We welcome newbies and returnees - if you are curious about the system feel free to ask questions or lurk! We do follow it, erm, loosely to say the least. So there is a lot of chat about random life stuff as well as housework, decluttering and organising.

A key element of flylady is not being a perfectionist!
I don’t think the regulars would mind me saying that most of us here are not naturals at housekeeping etc, so please don’t feel we are some intimidating group who demand perfectly shined sinks. We are human. We fall off the wagon. We commiserate and help each other climb back on, and we stock the virtual naughty corner with snacks and blankets for the days when adulting is just too hard.

So, the system:
🔹Some baby steps which are designed to help you build up a routine.
🔹Daily missions to help with sprucing up particular areas in the zones, for example the first zone of the month is the entry/porch and dining room if you have one.
🔹Try and do 15 minutes decluttering a day. It didn’t get cluttered in a week so it will take a lot longer to clear it!
🔹Daily focuses to help shape the week.
🔹Here on the thread many of us post to do lists, but also “ta da” lists of things we’ve achieved that day.
🔹We also recommend the Power of Three technique - if you’re overwhelmed with too much to do, just pick three things and don’t think about the rest.

Anyway, I will post some links each day (hopefully) but whether you follow the system or not - many of us just take the bits we like or build our own flylady style system to suit our own lives - do join in if you want a place to chat about keeping a house and family running!

Glad I inspired you ED. I’m determined to stick to doing it on a Saturday morning now I’ve started again.

Hope you had a lovely Mother’s Day Hazel, sounds like you did. At least DD won’t be too far away.

So riding on the back of the motivation from the home bleurgh, this morning I managed what I’ve been aiming to do for ages and got up before the rest of the family. I did a 20 minute yoga work out, hung out an LOL that I’d had on a timed wash and emptied the dishwasher. It definitely made a difference to how the rest of the morning went and I did not even LMS when it took 5 requests to get DD upstairs for teeth cleaning only for her to shout down 5 minutes later “why am I up here again?” I mean, she clearly gets it from me but still.

Since then during MiniUp’s nap times I have:
✅ put away yesterday’s clean laundry and ironing
✅thoroughly cleaned one section of kitchen bench
✅ 2 x s&s
✅cleaned the kitchen sink and tap. The sink was pretty manky and a bit tea-stained so I’ve left some bleach on it while I have a cuppa.

She’s still sleeping so going to do the weeks planner page. Have a good Monday everyone 🍒 👋

Duettino · 09/05/2022 19:14

@SingToTheSky wow that's very exciting. Do you work in a related field or is this a betterment of plan? I have a degree in psychology and criminology from many many moons ago. It's absolutely fascinating!

I went to the gym this morning and had a solid day at work. Did a load of washing. Yet to take it out. Tempted to go and clean now as DP not studying. Need to find my muster. He is in the office tomorrow so I could equally do it on my dinner.

I just ordered an iPhone pro max. I'm wondering if I acted impulsively and should cancel it. It's an extra £26 ish a month which doesn't sound a lot but it's probably wasted as I don't care about phones and also, the environmental impact of new phones is supposed to be terrible. I was only looking as my current phone needs charging around 3pm. Also, the £26 is in addition to the new car I bought on loan of approx £120 a month extra and cost of living increases. I can trade mine in for approx £150 which helps. Urgh. I hate decisions more than I hate cleaning.

swallowedAfly · 09/05/2022 19:15

Well done Still - that sounds like a great morning.

I'm just sneaking in and straight into the naughty corner. Thought it had only been a few days I'd fallen off the thread for but it's been closer to two weeks Shock

StillUp · 09/05/2022 20:50

Welcome back Fly. It’s amazing how quickly time flies isn’t it.

rest of ta das:
🍒re-organised big corner cupcakes that contains pans etc. Decluttered some old oven gloves x 2, several ancient cake tins and a pile of individual pie tins. They were given to me about 7 years ago. I’ve never used them. I rarely bake and can’t see a time I will ever need to make 10 pies. Why did I keep them?!
🍒washed the few cake tins that made the cut and found a better place to store them.
🍒 Did a DW cleaning cycle
🍒 paid for the next term of dancing
🍒 added various things to planner
🍒 cleaned the hob after DH cooked, did the dishes, shined the sink
🍒usual reading, maths, bedtime with DD1

StillUp · 09/05/2022 21:08

*Cupboard. I don’t have a big corner cupcakes. They wouldn’t last 5 minutes in our house.

GreenWillowAndCatkins · 09/05/2022 21:10

Big corner cupcakes @StillUp ? that's what they used to call me in High School I'm coming to your house! Epic 🚗🥕 there. Well done on sorting out your baking things. I love baking and have far too many pans that get used just often enough to keep them.

Hazel that sounds like a lovely Mother's Day. I'm glad DD won't be too far away, it means you can keep an eye. How exciting that DH has put in his two weeks notice - is he going on to something similar, or a new path?

Swallowed good to see you! Time goes so fast on here...

Duet I hope I didn't overstep! It's good that you have boundaries around helping your parents, or we can get consumed by it.

ED sounds like you'd better just empty the shed into a skip and have done with it!

YesTaDa
❤️ Lego in the garden to renew my spirit
🧡 Roast beef etc as predicted, although DS2 chopped the carrots
💛 Watched the Nick Knowles house makeover thing on catch-up. It's quite fun, I like it.
💚 Big push to get things done to start the week:
💙 Put the sofa covers back on
💜 Properly cleaned the kitchen after roast
❤️ Brought all the washing off the line, finished the towels off in the tumbler
🧡 Set the washing machine on the timer so there was a load ready to hang at 7am
💛 Rotated mattress and remade bed
💚 Handed out all clean washing
💜 Took first LOL for the morning downstairs to the utility room.

Ta Da
❤️ Morning routine the minute I got up - LOL on the line, next LOL in, DW rotated whils tea was brewing
🧡 Quick shower, S&S, meds etc, dressed and downstairs again by 7.50
💛 Wrote menu and partial Tesco order during breakfast (note to self: take random bottle of whisky out of basket)
💚 Took DD to school for 9am exam
💙 One hour's writing
💜 Financial planning meeting that DH had arranged for us with an IFA, but not mentioned til this morning!
❤️ Hung 2nd LOL out
🧡 Mopped DD up when she got home - exam was fine ("piece of piss", in her words) but the school forgot ALL HER ADJUSTMENTS FOR SEN despite constant emailing back and forth about it since September
💛 Crafted an emaul to the school with DH. Grovelling apologies received, will never happen again etc & so forth. We shall see.
💚 More writing
💙 Took DD back to school.for afternoon exam
💜 3 hr nap on sofa, which is slightly worrying
❤️ New lemon chicken recipe for dinner - very nice
🧡 Scrubbed the birdmuck off the trampette 🤢
💛 Ran a hygeine wash through the WM with the bird-muck cloths in
💚 Got washing off line and and handed it out
💙 Walked WillowHound with DH.

Ok, I think I see why I'm exhausted and back in bed!

🍒👋 to everyone.

Morning all,

Welcome back Fly, make yourself comfy in the naughty corner.

That - I am feeling a bit like that too, in my case it’s because my two have their GCSEs and A levels, so most extra-curricular stuff has stopped and I am treading on eggshells round them.

Willow - cracking lists!

Well, I didn’t manage the stove top mission (need to turn it off before I can do that as it’s a heat storage cooker, maybe at the weekend). I did however wipe down the fronts of the kitchen cupboards.

Tuesday’s Flight Plan

flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=-60

The mission today is to clean the silverware holder and it's environs, so maybe the cutlery drawer or if you have pots of utensils on your counter. Our cutlery drawer could do with a bit of a wipe-out, it’s so much better in this kitchen than our old one where it was under the space where we used to slice bread, make tea and coffee etc. Need to teach family to close it completely and not leave it slightly open.

Tuesday is also planning day.

GreenWillowAndCatkins · 10/05/2022 08:16

Thanks @EspeciallyDistracted . Two more exams for DD today, I feel your pain. Sending good luck to your DC and 💐 for you!

@TidyHouse2022 I know what you mean about the new site being confuzzling. I'm never quite sure where I am, and it jumps about on my phone screen so I end up in unexpected places because what I thought I clicked on, moved. Hoping a clean kitchen can help!

Ta da:
❤️ Dw
🧡 LOL on
💛 Washed, dressed, medicated

To do
🚗 Run DD to school for Classical Civ exam
🚗 Writing. More writing. Bit more writing
🚗 Collect DD
🚗 Update Tesco order
🚗 Walk to town to run errands
🚗 Take DD to school for afternoon exam...
🚗 And collect her again
🚗 Choose random dinner from freezer
🚗 Pilates at 6pm

i had probably better add "clean silverware drawer" to that, so I feel like I'm getting somewhere!

Hope everyone has a good day.

BloomingHazel · 10/05/2022 15:09

willow DH will be shifting back to being more of a mechanic. He sells parts right now (for lorries, tractors etc), and will be doing more of the physical work on them instead. Mostly changing tyres. He will be the manager though, so that will be a change for him. He used to work on the big trucks before this job, but even that was different.

YesTaDas:
🌺 worked all day (as usual)
🌺 did a workout as soon as I got home, I was going to get into comfy clothes, then realised I should just get my workout gear on!
🌺 went to the shoe shop with DH and DS. DH needed shoes urgently, as they kept eating his socks, which we also needed to get

No ta das yet today, just drank my 1st cup of coffee. I'm going out with SIL and MIL to go plant shopping today, while DD sits with grandma. That means I might not get much done today 😔

🍒👋 to everyone

Redsquirrel5 · 10/05/2022 17:29

Finally!
My housekeeping family🤗
I have missed you.
I have been locked out😭bloody changes. My Ipad would log on but i couldn't type anything in the box. the keyboard wouldn't pop up at all for the message box but would for the others very, very infuriating😖 however i have been reading along except for today's.
Dh has been hogging the computer downstairs and i have been busy.Too tired at night and he was usually up until later than me.

So cheery waves to everyone. Welcome, welcome to the newbies and I hope everyone who is not back soon will be. I had to change my password to get in.

I have been busy back in the market and helping some refugees both practically and support for filling in forms. We have managed to -coerce- persuade some ladies from church to help and so far so good. So I can do 3 mornings and the occasional all day Saturday. We have a mountain of stuff to pack but we have also washed and given out some clothes to people here. Friend and I are back on track with each other and had a really good laugh yesterday. We get on really well despite the age gap of about 30 years.
I could have done with some gardening/greenhouse expertise and think i was a little late putting seeds in. Flowers still to do but have Fr.beans, peas, broad beans, thyme, basil and some Diasica planted.

Life otherwise is ok. I have been painting. I still have left over Covid and so have to pace myself so a bit of art is helping me rest. i am still making lapel brooches and some hair bows but they are fiddly. Need to get on with squares for blankets for Scarf challenge this month.I took the others to the Women's refuge and they were very pleased.
Dh is pretty much behaving and has done some of the garden.

Flying is more soaring and diving. I am finding it easier to pull it back quickly when i get into a dive.
Looking forward to being back with you. Hills and Zoo I hope you are ok.I will be on spasmodically as DH is glued to it every morning. Perhaps target afternoon nap time and jump on like to day in mid wash loads. He emptied the loft. So now it is my problem to sort out.Just what i needed ...more to do! Mainly needs washing and parting with 😪found baby clothes.
Well in typical fashion that was longer than i meant but don't know when i will be back.

Redsquirrel5 · 10/05/2022 17:30

yeah it worked.😘

Morning all,

The Flight Plan for the day is here flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=-60

Weds is anti-procrastination day which means I need to allocate this evening to paperwork and not keep clearing off to the allotment.

The mission for the day is to clear out the fridge, I need to do that too.

Back later

OP posts:
GreenWillowAndCatkins · 11/05/2022 08:08

@Redsquirrel5 hooray, you're back! Glad you were able to defeat the New Platform Gremlins. How lovely that you are back on track with your friend, that's good news.

ED I'd say clearing off to the allotment was excellent anti-procrastination, but I know what you mean.

Well, today has started with a bang already when FIL rang at 7.15am to announce the computer was "dead". It wasn't, he'd just switched it right off - which he's agreed not to do - and forgotten how to login. He absolutely couldn't see that waking us up for something so frankly unimportant was a problem, then started quavering about "oh don't ask me to think about this now, I've not had breakfast"! I don't think that's our issue, mate! I'm glad he hadn't fallen or hurt himself, which was my fear when I heard the ring tone, but this is a worrying development.

Anyway, Ta Da:
❤️ DW rotated
🧡 LOL on
💛 S&S
💚 Bed airing
💙 Dinner agreed
💜 Second cup of tea steeping.
❤️ Wiped out cutlery drawer 🥳

To do:
🐑 Telecon 10am
🐑 More writing (SO nearly done)
🐑 Zoom seminar about the excavation of Seahenge in Norfolk at 1pm (very excited about this)
🐑 Anti-procrastination on fixing curtain linings in our bedroom - DH pulled them adrift last week 🤦
🐑 Talk DH down, who is beyond hopping with Pa.

SingToTheSky · 11/05/2022 08:58

Morning everyone. I am behind on the thread and barely checking MN ATM because it’s still annoying me.

I have already anti procrastinated today though, I finally cancelled an auto renew for an app subscription.

Yesterday was tiring - managed to fit laundry/kitchen tidy around 4 hours of work, then I spent my break making a chilli as it needed to go in the slow cooker. Then an hour maths lesson. The evening was mostly spent helping DSD2 with her assignment but I managed to do a bit of uni reading myself as well.

DS is now able to start physics lessons as well, which is exciting but I need to check how it will fit in!

po3.1
❗️Get dressed and take meds
❗️Message pupil’s mum about tomorrow’s lesson (possibly rearranging but more likely cancelled)
❗️Start tidying downstairs as I have a pupil coming here for a lesson today - also need to check if he’s bringing work from home

SingToTheSky · 11/05/2022 09:00

Yay red!

EspeciallyDistracted · 12/05/2022 07:12

Morning all,

I anti-procrastinated and started writing up some meeting minutes from last week (using someone else’s notes as I had to leave early which has made it trickier). Also did 1x LOL which I have just put on the washing line, it rained a lot yesterday but looks much better today. I badly needed the rain for the allotment.

So, today is Thursday which is Errand Day. We are still in the kitchen and our mission is to tackle the drawer where we keep plastic wrap, foil etc.

💚 Pulled out kitchen sofa, swept behind and underneath it, dusted behind radiator, pulled out shoe rack to de-mud, turned it through 90⁰ so it fits the space better.
💙 Delicious lunch of beef and tomato sandwich with Salad Bits and a cup of tea.

Good job I checked the diary, there's an online school meeting at 4pm about next year, that I'd forgotten about!

EspeciallyDistracted · 13/05/2022 08:23

Morning all, quiet on here yesterday. I’m getting the impression from here and other long running threads I’m on that a lot of people are still having problems with new MN, so annoying.

Willow - well done on your productive day

Bean - well done on the rafters, that sounds like a fiddly job.

Today is Friday, when Flylady asks us to clean out our handbag and car (both badly need doing Chez Distracted).

It is our final day in the kitchen, our mission is to sort out the undersink cupboard, links for the day are here:

flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=-60

It is also supposed to be date night, I have a date with my personal trainer 🏋

OP posts:
GreenWillowAndCatkins · 13/05/2022 10:30

I was just thinking, ED that MN have achieved the impossible and killed their own platform. It's too much like hard work to get it to do anything! I realised yesterday that I wasn't going mad, Active Threads was refreshing even if I was using the back button, so I was missing things I thought I was going back to see.

Anyway. Am Domestic Goddess!

Ta Da (including the end of yesterday):
💖 went to school online meeting. They are VERY EXCITED to share ALL THE NEW THINGS next year. Which are VERY EXCITING. And also NEW.
🧡 Did I mention they are also EXCITED?
💛 But very little of the NEW EXCITING stuff if for Y8, so I'm not sure why I was there.
💚 Assembled and baked pie
💙 put cushion covers back on - I have accidentally created a hedgehog (see picture)
💚 Big sleep!
💜 DW, S&S, LOL on
💖 Clean washing handed out
🧡 Bed made, windows open, second hoover of the week up and downstairs (told you I was a domestic goddess!)
💛 Emails cleared
💚 DD taken to school and retrieved again
💙 Birthday presents ordered for DS3
💜 Birthday presents reviewed for DS2's GF and my DSis

Now I have a clanging headache behind my right eye so I'm going to have a coffee and shut my eyes for ten minutes to see if it shifts it. Tennis social for DS3 tonight, 4.30-6 and Tesco expected 8-9.
