Playing the Minimalism Game

For the month of October I am challenging myself to playing the 30 Day Minimalism Game as described by various people on their YouTube channels including The Minimalists. I prefer Jolita Bartkus' video on this. I know October has 31 days but the last day is for reflecting on how the month went.

How to Play: On the 1st you declutter one thing, on the 2nd you declutter 2 things, on the 3rd three things and so on. By the end of 30th day, 465 items should have been decluttered. Well, that's the aim.

I've been on this decluttering lark for a few years now so it'll be an interesting project. I'll try to update everyday of what was decluttered and maybe a little story of some of the items. I'm doing this online as a way to hold myself to account but I would welcome anyone who would like to join me.

It starts tomorrow. Eek!

Nice work on the tiny bottles @RedCake I might look at my collection tomorrow

mrsjackrussell · 06/10/2021 14:28

@Declutterclogs I think I will keep the medication thing in case of emergency as doing ok atm. Good job on the bra front. I'm eyeing up my underwear drawer now.

Heading to town soon so Iv done day 7 & 8 for the Oxfam bookshop.

These were gifted to me in lockdown and never looked at them.

@Declutterclogs getting rid of size 8/10 cloths from 20 years ago will be a massive challenge for me. I’m saving that for the last week as I reckon there are big numbers to be had. Not to mention acknowledging that I am never fitting in to them again.

Im trying to lob the large items first so I can see space appearing. No noticeable difference in the house yet.

anonymousanne · 06/10/2021 14:31

@AdultingAvoidance

I think you all have so much to declutter because you don't sort and tidy on a regular basis, Saw the broken claw clip, that should have been binned when it happened not left as a triumphant declutter day item. It's so unnecessary to live like that (yes judgy)
It takes all sorts to make the world go around. I'd say I'm pretty minimalistic (minus the ridiculous amount of baby/toddler gear), but I read this and thought the idea was great! I have products in the bathroom I could sort, my wardrobe is a biggie and surely every house in the world has a draw of random crap?? You don't have to live in squalor to have a declutter, and even if they do what harm is it doing you? If you can't relate to the thread just move on by 🙄🙄 Good luck to those playing, I'd join in but I hardly have time to pee these days so no sorting out/decluttering for me 🤣
RedCake · 06/10/2021 14:33

This game is helping my world go round Smile

Declutterclogs · 06/10/2021 15:12

Same!!

@RedCake I haven't been able to find the strength to deal with the clothes or the acceptance til this week and this thread - and it's been a 20 year journey for me too. It's some pretty big emotional work isn't it. I'm still reeling a bit from having started!

Trumpton · 06/10/2021 15:52

6 random wool ends and practice pieces . Boom!

Today's haul:
4 useless hangers with clips that have been wallowing in my wardrobe just in case for years
1 pack of foam floor tiles
1 out of date medicine bottle

Plus
3 balls made from fymo
2 prices of artwork from a year ago
1 (another) dummy holder.

I’m a bit late to the party but saw this thread today and it’s a great idea! Glad to see in the video that she was counting individual washers towards the end. I’m going to try not to get that desperate. I am going to try and catch up over the next three days and I am going to make sure if anything comes into the house an extra item is added to the decluttering pile. Also only going to count when stuff is physically out of the house. I have a little pile of things to sell and they HAVE to be gone by the end of the month.

So my catch up so far:

Day 1: pair of baby leggings with a hole in
Day 2: Eye spy book and a tankard
Day 3: Small roll of extra wool, number flash cards, and cracked Tupperware box

Today In: New winter coat for DD
Extra Out: Some cut up bit of sock MIL left here from her wool and has been hanging around waiting to be returned for weeks.

freezerdinners · 06/10/2021 18:40

Grin @Declutterclogs I was wondering!!!

YupIFreakilyHave · 06/10/2021 20:17

Still here.

Will catch up tomorrow.

Oh and super work everyone. So happy for you all. 😊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😊

Hi everyone. Welcome @sandwichdistraction.

I've had a hectic day so I took an easy option. 25 bits of paper, receipts etc removed from my handbag, plus a bonus 5. Running total of bonus items 22. Also removed 6 pens Shock, but I'm not counting these as they went into the pen pot.

RedCake · 06/10/2021 22:00

Worryingly I’m eyeing up the photos thinking hmmm I need one of those.

Elenorrigbywoes · 06/10/2021 22:39

I got rid of my six items before I left for work - a broken toy car, plastic egg, bag of spare clothes for childminder, random plastic parts from a kinder egg toy and a bracelet. It is such a positive habit and I'm enjoying decluttering more items each day. Great work everyone.

RedCake · 06/10/2021 22:41

You are not wrong @WitchityGrubby Grin

WitchityGrubby · 06/10/2021 22:46

Oops, forgot I'd name changed

Trumpton · 07/10/2021 07:37

Went through medical box. Out of date dental kit, dressings, empty Maxalt box( migraine meds) , gloves that looked less than fresh, thermometer ear covers ( we are family !) , medicine cup, out of date First Defence ( I will buy fresh when we start flying again .

Had a charity bag through the door for collection tomorrow so I have managed to catch up.

Day 4 - 7: total out 22 - 20 clothes and toys in charity bag, 1 10k race medal in the bin and sold 1 baby bath that is being collected this morning.

We are on holiday 23rd-26th so I might have to try and do those days ahead of schedule.

YupIFreakilyHave · 07/10/2021 10:34

Having missed a few days, I'm playing catch up.

Day 4:

2 freebie eye masks
1 dental impression
1 spare box for night guard

Total: 10

The dental impression is going to DC's old nursery. They will LOVE it.

Various half empty make up items, including lipstick that doesn't suit me AT ALL.

I don't wear makeup any more. Maybe for a wedding.
