Playing the Minimalism Game

YupIFreakilyHave · 30/09/2021 21:00

For the month of October I am challenging myself to playing the 30 Day Minimalism Game as described by various people on their YouTube channels including The Minimalists. I prefer Jolita Bartkus' video on this. I know October has 31 days but the last day is for reflecting on how the month went.

How to Play: On the 1st you declutter one thing, on the 2nd you declutter 2 things, on the 3rd three things and so on. By the end of 30th day, 465 items should have been decluttered. Well, that's the aim.

I've been on this decluttering lark for a few years now so it'll be an interesting project. I'll try to update everyday of what was decluttered and maybe a little story of some of the items. I'm doing this online as a way to hold myself to account but I would welcome anyone who would like to join me.

It starts tomorrow. Eek!

I’m away for week next weekend so I’ve been “getting ahead” numbers helps me find right days to post! Been quite addictive this morning.

Most mine been random crap nothing really sentimental yet this could be telling!

lazylinguist · 03/10/2021 13:26

I haven't got started yet today - other jobs to do first. I don't think I'll have any trouble finding 3 items out of all the stuff I still haven't put back from yesterday though!

MissCreeAnt · 03/10/2021 14:12

Day 3 so in my backwards system, I need 28 items.

6 shoes (and yes I am counting individual shoes!!)
32 underwear and my original set of cloth sanitary pads. Some were home made. I daren't say how old they are Blush.

So 28 items achieved, plus bonus 10

Declutterclogs · 03/10/2021 14:15

@Chrysanthemum5 thank you for sharing your boots story. I know people say 'things' aren't important, but the way things can make you feel certainly is. New shoes or bag or outfit can definitely give a HUGE confidence boost when you need it can't they- so it's totally understandable that they are hard to get rid of!

@Akire I reckon the sentimental stuff is just biding it's time - it won't be too far away! Getting rid of the unsentimental clutter is just as valuable though - and also hard to do because it's just such an annoying task! So a tasty biscuit for you too

Declutterclogs · 03/10/2021 14:16

Ugh biding its time. Sorry

AdultingAvoidance · 03/10/2021 14:17

I think you all have so much to declutter because you don't sort and tidy on a regular basis, Saw the broken claw clip, that should have been binned when it happened not left as a triumphant declutter day item. It's so unnecessary to live like that (yes judgy)

Akire · 03/10/2021 14:24

Reported Hmm

lazylinguist · 03/10/2021 14:25

Wow - what a revelation! No shit, Sherlock. Guess what - people are busy, and non-urgent stuff sometimes piles up. I'm sure you are absolutely perfect in all aspects of your life though. Except in being a kind and non-judgy person, of course - I think that area could do with some work.

As for it being 'unnecessary to live like that' - like what? I have things to declutter and like the idea if owning fewer, but they are things which are in cupboards etc - my house is pretty tidy and clean. I do not live in chais by any means.

@AdultingAvoidance I'm judging you as a fun sucking misery pants. And I'd rather be someone who has to declutter sometimes than be so miserable

MissCreeAnt · 03/10/2021 14:38

@yupIfreakilyhave short and pithy is good too.

AdultingAvoidance · 03/10/2021 14:41

Amazed I have been reported for a differing opinion! In my house if I break a claw clip, I bin it. Why would I leave it sitting around? It's a brittle plastic claw clip that won't work. I find it strange that anyone would just leave it on the side. No, my house isn't perfect, it's a normal busy family home and yes I work full time out of the house

YupIFreakilyHave · 03/10/2021 14:43

If you must know I was still using it until I got a new one a few days ago. Happy now? Hmm

@MissCreeAnt is it 28 items today for you?

I reported because just unnecessary Mean when it’s a positive thread. You don’t need declutter why comment? Do you go on the diet threads and tell everyone you shouldn’t let it get that bad just eat less? Or the money ones and say just spend less I would never get in that state.

I’m out anyway, got enough stress in my life without someone picking over what I post for next month. Thanks bundle for making something positive horrid. Good luck to everyone else.

rurbane · 03/10/2021 15:38

Starting this today but including items that were working their way towards being decluttered for days 1 and 2. Sometimes I have to check if dp and dc are happy with things going and it can cause a delay.

Day 1: beach toys. My children were OK with letting them go. dp, however, ...
Day 2: 2 water pistols
Day 3: 3 bits known as 'the box it came in'

lazylinguist · 03/10/2021 15:40

lazylinguist You said it so much more eloquently 😆

Grin Linguist by name, linguist by nature. I like the sound of my own voice, even when it's in my head! Blush

mrsjackrussell · 03/10/2021 16:19

Hello, can I join please?
I decluttered 6 items today to catch up.
A cardigan my daughter doesn't want and has left here.
3 dvds including a box set
Candle holders
Hessian bags

I keep thinking I might want the hessian bags but they sat in cupboard for months Smile

@YupIFreakilyHave

*@MissCreeAnt* is it 28 items today for you?
Am I counting it wrong? I started with 30 on the 1st, 29 on 2nd, so 28 on 3rd.

Maybe I should have started at 31

YupIFreakilyHave · 03/10/2021 16:46

No. I think that's right. 28 on the 3rd and today is the third.

OP posts:
YupIFreakilyHave · 03/10/2021 16:59

Welcome @mrsjackrussell and @rurbane both good starts.

@Akire Please don't let that goady poster undermine you and us, who are all supportive of each other. However, if you want to bow out I can totally understand.

I saw it as a fun thing to do. Had no idea people could care so much about my broken clip. Who knew.

Oh @MissCreeAnt on the 31st you only have to reflect on how the process and celebrate your success.

OP posts:
lazylinguist · 03/10/2021 17:01

Right - today's 3 items:

  1. a shower plug hole cover that just makes the water not drain away properly. It's been sitting in a cupboard since a week after we had the bathroom fitted 2 years ago Grin
  2. A candle I like the smell of but it's half-burned, dusty and lost its smell a bit
  3. Some earphones which hurt my ears
Elenorrigbywoes · 03/10/2021 17:01

Day 3 - birthday banner, tea towel and old toy. I dropped a present to my nephew and a small bag of baby bits to a friend so that feels like a lot out today.

MissCreeAnt · 03/10/2021 17:58

@akire I hope you do stay.
@mrsjackrussell totally know what you mean, I tend to hang onto bags and boxes thinking they'll be useful for something.

@YupIFreakilyHave ah yes, that 31st step is crucial Grin
