Playing the Minimalism Game

For the month of October I am challenging myself to playing the 30 Day Minimalism Game as described by various people on their YouTube channels including The Minimalists. I prefer Jolita Bartkus' video on this. I know October has 31 days but the last day is for reflecting on how the month went.

How to Play: On the 1st you declutter one thing, on the 2nd you declutter 2 things, on the 3rd three things and so on. By the end of 30th day, 465 items should have been decluttered. Well, that's the aim.

I've been on this decluttering lark for a few years now so it'll be an interesting project. I'll try to update everyday of what was decluttered and maybe a little story of some of the items. I'm doing this online as a way to hold myself to account but I would welcome anyone who would like to join me.

It starts tomorrow. Eek!

Continuing day 24…

• 1 toilet roll stand not needed
• 3 big wood pallets and cardboard from DH garage cabinets etc deliveries to dump
• 6 Presents to friends and teachers leaving the house

-1 more chewed up dog toy -1 pair of shoes being returned -1 fleece also

So 140 items to go. I was busy today but found 23. 117 left to find.

27 items today. 277/361, or looking at it another way, 916 items in 2 months. That's not bad really. Reckon I might call it a day there for now. I'll be "encouraging" teen DD to have a good clear out over the hols and I'm sure we'll get to over 1000 once that's done.

It's been great to share the journey.

I'm finished now too. I'm continuing the decluttering but in my own time and I'm sure that I will do the remaining 117 soon.

I had to have a little smile this morning my lovely friend sent me a craft Advent calendar. 24 little craft items. I think tomorrow’s is needles so all useful !

I am dropping off 3 duvets this morning as I had to empty airing cupboard for plumber.
Also old towels to vets

Day 25:

• 1 DS too small fleece
• 1 DS worn out t-shirt
• 1 DS too small t-shirt
• 6 DS too small pants
• 2 pairs of old socks
• 1 single sock
• 1 parcel of clothes returned
• 1 present given away
• 1 big bunch of Christmas cards mailed ( 50 ish )
• 1 pencil cases worth of DD destroyed stationary to bin at end of term
• 6 pairs of DD old school socks to rags
• 1 more finished book to charity box
• 1 Christmas decoration
• 1 finally finished mini size wonder balm pot thats worked wonders on my cracked heels , been in the drawer for ages until I finally tried it properly

I’m aware that the month finished and I didn’t make it in time unlike in October but for myself I’d like to do rest of the days I have left even if it takes a while longer . 5 more left ...

I got sucked back in helping DD! 44 more items done from her room, now 960/1000 for the 2 months

Determined to get those 5 more days done !
Here’s beginning of
Day 26:

• 3 metal hangers from dry cleaning to metal collection at dump
• 1 plastic hanger from DS other new coat
• 1 pair DS too small trousers I noticed in his wardrobe although have been going through it endlessly
• 1 more David Walliams book DD finished ,she’s now moved onto the next . I kept them from DS and glad I did since she’s really enjoyed them too
• 1 soft dog ball destroyed stitches coming off ,soon I’ll do a cull in preparation for his new ones arriving with Santa !
• toiletries used up from my stash now I know what I have better I’m not buying duplicates

More later from the clean laundry pile I hope .
We gave up our rental last week now waiting to get our deposit back and be properly done with it then after Christmas we are planning to start emptying the storage locker and that’ll generate a lot of outs .
My mum is decluttering my kids old equipment like the high chair and the travel cot and toys in Finland shed kept incase we had another one but I’ve told her they can all go now . They need to move at some point as well and a bit morbidly she doesn’t want to leave us a lot to sort out once they die. We have had a lot of losses in both families in the last few years .

Slow going here but a few more things to add to day 26 total

• 1 too small hockey stick
• 1 old pencil case
• 3 pairs of DD pants
• 4 pairs of old socks both to rags
• 1 box of clothing being returned
• 1 big open box of dog chews he doesn’t eat just carries and abandons in different corners around the house so they’re pointless waste of space !

7 more left to find ,if I had the energy to do kids clothes clothes again it’d be easy but they’re out of my room for Christmas, it’s bad enough to have boxes of presents I don’t want the clothing boxes too . They were here for a few weeks . I will return to them later I think .

• 3 pairs of DS old pants
• 3 open packets of braided lamb skin sticks dog doesn’t care for anymore
• 1 chewed up mouthguard of DDs , she’s been keeping it at school in her hockey bag and I’m horrified at the state of it , we’ll make a new one in the holidays luckily last day of school tomorrow !

4 more days I will try to do them …

Onto Day 27:

• 1 lone sock
• 1 worn out hockey stick bag
• 5 chewed up dog toys
• dog reward biscuits he’s stopped eating so swapped them for meat ones

I'm not counting anymore but lots of Xmas tree decs are going to charity soon.

Mrsjackrussell I dont feel like I’m doing well but I kind of want to finish what I started .

A few more :

• 1 DS broken hoodie shirt to rags
• 1 too small dog Christmas patterned snood from his treat and toy box
• 1 useless dog Christmas snuffle mat , for some reason with this he just spreads his kibble all over the floor unlike with his old one

Another 16 for day 27 to find ( and 3 more days to go ) but I have been very tired and busy with other stuff so it’s happening drip by drip . When DH was going to dump and charity shop with rest of the previous stuff today I tried to open the kids clothes boxes that are now in the study until we sort out the attic a bit ( before Christmas) I got real anxiety and had to just close the lid . I need to do the rest when I’m in the right frame of mind …
Here’s chipping at it with a couple of more :

• 3 more toiletry bottles finished from my stash
• 1 new ornament I was given but don’t want to charity
• a big pile of boxes to dump

So now 11 left . Tonight I will sort out the boxes and deliveries of presents etc and at least get rid of lots more cardboard !

• 1 pair of my broken pyjama trousers to rags
• 1 parcel of DS too big pants returned
• 1 ugly shirt returned
• 1 damaged Christmas present returned
• 1 rock hard dog chew he doesn’t seem to care for to bin
• 1 unwanted diary to charity
• 1 metal biscuit box my mum sent something to the kids in to metal collection
• 4 packets of the most disgusting smelling fish dog food to food bank ( nothing wrong with it I just can’t stand the smell !)

And onto
Day 28:

• 1 unused dog toothbrush
• 1 unwanted dog treat bag
• 1 dog planner ( all arrived with something else I ordered …)

25 items left to find ;

• 1 more a packet of new dog chew sticks he hasn’t taken to so they’re going , will try the other flavours before tossing those too if he wont eat them
• 3 pairs of old pants
• 3 pairs of old socks both to rags
• another dog planner I received earlier
• 1 more plastic basket I spotted in the kitchen cupboard (I’ve been getting rid of these and using different containers instead )
• 1 worn out school water bottle to recycling

Now 15 left on this day and 2 more to go after that . I will get there !!!

I'm disappointed I only just found this thread! Love seeing all the random stuff, I've got loads of it cluttering the place up.

It’s just me left here because I am stubbornly wanting to finish the month after not managing in time unlike oct !

I haven't rtft (!!) But am going to watch the initial video and have a browse through for inspiration later. You've done really well, is this the 3rd month?

We’ll it’s me finishing my second month .I didn’t manage to do the last few days of November but I want to finish it so I’m chipping at it until I’m done 😁. I haven’t got the time or energy to actually start going through any boxes before Christmas so these last bits will be drip by drip . I don’t think any one’s started a dec thread but you could join the decluttering one thing a day thread I’ve also been on in the past .

Found a few items tonight :

• 2 too small hats of DS to clothes bank
• 1 frozen sticker book finished by DD (I took her to see the musical last week )
• 1 puzzle of DDs that turns out she’s finished before already to make room for Christmas

presents

• 2 manky wooden cooking utensils we’ve used with the food disposal

Now 9 remaining …
