Here we are on the February 2021 Flylady thread - this time last year we were just starting to realise that the world was going to change in a big, big way. The Fledgling threads have pulled us all together and been a great source of comfort and distraction from it all.

This is a friendly housekeeping thread based (loosely... Extremely loosely sometimes 😂) on Flylady's housekeeping system . Welcome one and all, lurkers and long-time posters alike. Join in, hang out, but above all remember you are not behind, just jump in where you are.

The beauty of Flylady is that you don't have to flatten yourself trying to get your house clean to begin the routine upkeep; the first - and only - thing she asks you to do is to shine your kitchen sink. Routines - morning, afternoon and evening - are built gradually through her Baby Steps. To those, you add a Daily Focus and a weekly area to concentrate cleaning on. By the end of a month, your whole house will have had some attention. If you miss a bit, never mind, it'll come round next month!

For this month, I'll be posting daily links to the Launch Pad on the Flylady site so you can follow the daily focus and cleaning missions. You can sign up to receive emails from Flylady, but we suggest you don't - she sends masses, which will clog up your inbox and drive you insane into the bargain.

Because this thread has been running a while, there are some acronyms we use to make life easier
S&S - swish and swipe, round the bathroom to keep it acceptable daily
LOL - load of laundry. No, we don't find washing that funny!
Ned - born of a typo, a mythical being who assists with laundry mountains
The pointy stick ----> to motivate people
PO3 - Power of 3, if you can only face a few tasks. People often find groups of 3 tasks stack up over a day!
The Naughty Corner - where we head when it's all Too Much. Usually stocked with fresh coffee, fluffy throws, delicious snacks and the opportunity to sit quietly with friends or build a blanket fort and sulk in it if you need to.

During the Pandemic, we have also been using the KCC or Keep Calm Corner, invented by long-time poster / thread leader SC. This is a regular dose of memes, questions for discussion, random trivia etc to distract us from the rest of the world. All contributions welcome!

Remember - No Fledgling Left Behind!

Thanks red I’ve done prompt lists before like Inktober but I think for my current needs those are a bit too involved as I can take quite a while deciding. I’m hoping this quick daily exercise will help loosen me up a bit, drawing wise :o

Well I’m only just getting to bed now as DD1 was in a panic. I have to admit part of me is quite glad she does care about her schoolwork - she joined the school very enthusiastic but that has reduced over time, and I’m glad she is concerned now about keeping up - I think the avoidance has caught up with her TBH so I think she will learn from this. And I have reiterated that we are of course proud of her, the teachers really like her and often praise her etc and that we will manage to get her caught up. It just means we have to properly sit down and go through all the Google tasks and see what is missing, what needs uploading etc, which usually makes her grumpy and more avoidant. Not relishing that task but from the conversation we’ve just had (why is it always past midnight when we have them) I think she’s finally accepted it’s necessary.

Unfortunately she’s inherited her “if I ignore it it’ll go away” from me.

I am of course now wired so I’m curling up with Netflix for a bit. Don’t mention the maltesers. 😳

Red- your breakfast pancakes sound amazing and with cup of tea, i would think you were the best wife in the world too!

Woolly- glad you are trying to stay off your foot. How is the not eating sugar going?

Butta- how is E feeling now? Sorry to hear he wasnt feeling well. Lots of mummy cuddles will help.

Mc- are you still carrying Mc tiny around in a sling while you do bits around the house? Has Mc tiny got to a lovely size now? Where they are strong and grab hold and cuddles are fab.
Miss mine being little and small in my arms. But even tho they are big, they still want lots of cuddles from me.

Hiya everyone, up late again with heartburn and feeling uncomfortable. Restless leg syndrome is keeping me awake most nights now. Elijah is okay, I’ve got a vapour bubble bath from Asda and that seems to have helped a bit. He’s in my bed so I can keep an eye on him. We did some shape sorting today, he’s getting really good at it!. Thank you everyone for your well wishes for Elijah :)

Great news about negative test sing! I’m sorry DD was panicky, but it seems like she’s got a good idea on what to do now!

red I just ordered some vitamin c orange drops, great idea!. Your greenhouse plans sound lovely!

I hope the pain killers have worked THAT

Sorry you had a bad day yesterday foxes, I hope today was better!

dancing I think if I ever got in a relationship again I’d go for separate beds, I like my space too much to share!. He’s better now, still not himself, but lots of cuddles tonight will hopefully make him better.

Morning all

I 'finished' and sent my essay last night. I say 'finished' as it wasn't really. It needed to be bare minimum 1900 words and was about 1250. But i just couldn't do anymore. I won't get the 40 pass mark but i will get SOMETHING which i can then pull back in other (hopefully my brain reappears). I'm not beating myself up about it, there is no point. Also, i don't have time for that!

I need to catch up on my maths today, i have to do some mock exam papers and take them to the centre i think by Friday

My back / side feels better today (touch wood) but i will be taking it easy. I was having a lot of round ligament pain yesterday too, every time i sneezed was agony!

Listen to me, moan moan moan!

Valentines day we will probably just have a nice steak from the butchers

Well done that for getting something done and handed in! That is a big achievement.

Hills that’s so sweet about DS remembering. I guess that sort of time specific TV isn’t a likely memory for today’s toddlers, now we have 24h access to baconface et al

I’m sure I had other stuff to say but it’s all fallen out of my head. I’m still in bed, I think I have what DH had, but no key symptoms needing a test yet. Cagletini wouldn’t wake up either so she’s home, DS will do bare minimum work.

I think for Valentine’s Day I might order the next season of King of the Hill to watch together, we both like that and something funny may cheer us up a bit. I bought DH the first season for a birthday years back as he’d mentioned it, and was surprised how much I liked it, I think we are up to season 6. Propane anyone?

I’m not planning on getting up for a while yet but if I feel more awake later I can work on my bujo as I need to fill in some trackers etc.

Need to get up and get cracking. I am just going to do front door area and vacuum stairs. After that just some normal jobs and I might start putting away the Christmas crockery😥we use it until end of January then it gets bubble wrapped and into a large Really Useful Box. Always sad to see it go but pleased to get it out just before Christmas.

Plan for a walk if it isn’t too cold and slippy. We did get snow but not much so will be melted soon unless we get more.

Hi everyone, I’m off work today and DD is at nursery so I have a day to myself. I realise how lucky I am to have this now and then reading posts from other fledglings. I really don’t know how you do it!

I was thinking about blitzing the house today, but then thought about how DH would never ever consider taking a day off work to do housework, so instead I’m putting no pressure on myself and just seeing what I end up doing.

I think I found yesterday the hardest day of this whole pandemic. I’d looked forward to a day of with DD, and the morning was nice, but then just hit a complete slump in the afternoon. She didn’t want to do anything like bake or play doh (the stuff I quite enjoy) and just wanted me to play in her room with her. I got complete cabin fever and just wanted to be able to go somewhere that wasn’t within walking distance from home! Things looked up a bit when she wanted to play hairdressers and I got to sit still while she played with my hair Grin. I’ve given myself a shake and I know how lucky we are to have lots of scope for walks and fresh air.

Sorry things haven’t been great Foxes, hope today is better. Very exciting about the kitchen!

Hills how lovely that DS has remembered that, it’s funny the simple things that stick in their head isn’t it.

Sing I tried to explain to DD yesterday about how we could only watch what was on at any given time and couldn’t just have on whatever we wanted. She didn’t get it Grin. How annoying about the nursery. I also find children disrupt toy organisation. DD insists on mixing up her toy baskets and different sets. Moana should be barefoot not in Elsa’s boots, and rapunzel should definitely not be wearing her dolls booties. I have to zip my mouth up and sit on my hands when o watch Grin

Dancing I try to remember that anyone with an immaculate home has either worked hard to get it like that for you coming, or probably has another area of their life that they are struggling with. No one is perfect. Remember, while you’re homeschooling no one sees your house. Once people can come round you won’t be homeschooling and you can up your standards. Just keep on top of the basics for now. If I was homeschooling I think I’d try and have the morning routine done by 9:30. Then I’d do 15 mins decluttering or zone cleaning and/or the mission while the DC were doing a task. The home bleurghing is just an hour or so that’s only one day where you need to do a bit more. Could you do it at the weekend when DH is about? My DH is The Parent for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning while I get mine done. Ultimately though, you are homeschooling and keeping the DC fed and clean, you can’t do everything.

That migraine or whatever it was sounds awful Zoo. Glad it’s passed, and glad you’re feeling better too ED.

Right, after my mega waffle I’ll add my ta Das:
🌸 dropped DD off at nursery and came home via the supermarket for bread, milk, fruit, cereal, birthday card and beers for a relative and a big bar of aero
🌸 put shopping away
🌸 breakfast of waffles and chocolate spread as there is no DD here to set a good example for
🌸 LOL
🌸 made beds
🌸 sorted clean laundry
🌸 had telephone appointment
🌸 set off DW, wiped benches
🌸 pottered in DD’s room sorting outgrown clothes, organising her wardrobe and drawers, looking at what we’ll need to get her for the spring/summer. I bought lots in the sales last year so not much needed.
🌸 hoovered kitchen while the kettle was boiling

Now I’m having at least an hour of not moving!

Aw up I’m sorry you had a bad day, glad you’ve got a day off today (I think you’re brilliant using any of it to do housework!). It’s such a crappy boring pointless time isn’t it?! We aren’t even ones to go out and about a huge amount TBH - day trips are quite a faff with the little one and needing trains etc, so they are rare, but having absolutely nothing to look forward to is just beyond crap isn’t it. I just remembered need to look up what’s happening with some tickets I had for a show last year that was originally rescheduled for January!

DH took the Caglets to a different park yesterday - DD1 used to go there after school when not in lockdown. I realised that’s the first new place she’s been to since around April last year when they went to a nearby pond. 9ish months of no new places, at an age when you’re meant to be expanding your experiences and discovering new things. It totally bites.

I’m still resting in bed - watched some shows, listened to audiobook etc. Finished the maltesers 🤫

I agree with you all - it all just seems relentless at the moment doesn't it?

Sorry you had a bad day up , hope today has been better for you. There is a chance I may have a child-free day this week - my parents were my childcare bubble before Christmas but haven't wanted to continue since then, which I completely understand, with numbers in our areas coming down a bit now they have offered to have the dc because dh is doing a training course from home and with both dc here that will be tricky and I don't want to take them out on an 8 hour walk! Anyway, my point really was that I would also like to try not to just get the house clean and tidy and actually enjoy some time to myself! So I hope you did have a well-earned rest today.

I've been working today and I'm thoroughly fed up with it now, roll on half past 5. I really should get back on with it.

My feeble ta da list (I started strong but then got less productive)
Made ds packed lunch
Took ds to nursery (had a huge row because he wouldn't put his shoes on, he cried all the way and then refused to say goodbye to me, I then felt like crying all the way home but didn't because dd with me, then I collected him and they said he'd been absolutely fine and he had totally forgotten the whole thing arrrrgggh)
Work
Got dd to do some art, some English and some RE with a little bit of help every now and then
Dishwasher emptied and reloaded
LOL
Quick tidy
Popped to shop on way home from dropping ds off
Rang the dentist to book my check up (finally!!)
More work and more work

Better get back to it and stop hoping it will go away!

foxes 🍷for surviving the work day.
zoo I hope that start of a migraine won't blossom into a full on one. Can you take anything for it?
Sing I hope you recover soon from whatever bug your DH shared with you. Delighted to hear his test was negative.
That well done for handing in your essay! Super woman.
Up I sympathise with your wobble yesterday. I actually stopped proper daily tidy up of toys.. I find it's pointless tidying them all away in the evening just to take everything out again in the morning 😬
Dancing mctiny is growing fast! I love carrying him in a sling (I did get a more structured carrier though, to save my back as he is getting heavier). I just can't get enough of cuddles, trying to soak up every moment.

Ta das:
💥Sorted out mother's birthday gift. She is very difficult to buy for, so I am hoping she will like it.
💥Ordered flowers to be delivered for my DH on Valentines day. I thought I'd go a bit unconventional this year. I really like when he gets me flowers, so I want him to experience the same. Also will look into food delivery/take out on the day, I would try to pre-order for the day, as I imagine delivery would be busy in the current climate.
💥Done the hand and foot prints for my little baby in clay. Now they are setting and will be framed on Thursday.

So not much actual cleaning going on, but lots of other wee tasks that were outstanding.
🍒👋 to everyone!

Evening all, been at work again today, it is so much better than wfh for me but does mean the house gets neglected a bit.

Tada!
Work
Bought petrol for the first time since December (usually get through a tank per week)
Home, chat with DCs
De-pooped litter trays
Lit woodburner
Put washing on.
Cooked risotto. I don't even like risotto but DH does and I was curious to see if the DCs would - they were a bit meh. It came out perfect in texture but a bit bland, it was very, very easy using the Instant Pot

I'm in bed now, I'll pop back on in the morning with links and catch up with chat.

MC you sound very organised. Glad you getting lots of cuddles.

That fantastic achievement. Onwards and upwards! You must be an inspiration to others on your course.

Zoo I sometimes start my migraines like that very disconcerting. Hope you feel better tomorrow.

Foxes I put the timer on and found I was working much faster than usual. I think I was trying to beat the clock and get it finished before it pinged. It might be worth a try then if it is done quicker you can have some time to yourself. Consider a face mask or foot soak. I find those feel great. Or an hour in the day reading a magazine or novel. Hope you get the time.

Sing BF grandchild had a letter from the government not to take her out. She has hardly been away from there anyway but now confined. She is nearly three and they only have a little yard. Poor mite. She was used to going to grannies this time last year and they have about 1/2 acre of garden and live on a farm. She can’t go to nursery either and her dads trying to look after her and wfh as mum is a key worker.

UP sorry you are finding it hard at the moment. When it gets warmer I think it will lift all our spirits. When I am having a bad day I think “ You could be a mother in a high rise flat with five kids.” That thought for a minute of what that would be like soon sorts me out. We are all feeling a bit of cabin fever I think.

I didn’t get out for a walk today as it was too icy. It was enough going down to let the hens out. The cover stops them having to walk on snow but some of it had collapsed with the wait. It snowed a few times in the day and is forecast tonight. It is bloody 🥶 cold.

TA DA
Aired bed.
Put wash in.
Let chickens out.
Had tea and toast and made DH some.
Washed up. He dried and swept the floor while I made bed and vacuumed floor with different vacuum.
Put away some clothes.

Tidy entrance and vacuumed stairs. Not working and not charging so start stop and we will need a new battery.
Used other vacuum to do dining room and sitting room.
Put wash in drier.
Heated soup made yesterday. A little hot and I only put a pinch of chilli. Warmed us up though.
Sorted magazine pile and looked through one. Cup of tea.
Watched a shot film.
Made next doors children a hot chocolate and chocolate balls package and put on door when mum went to collect them. I thought it would be a nice surprise when they came home from school.

Dusted sitting room surfaces and doors. We have latch ones so top, middle and bottom need a wipe.
Put another wash in.

Made fish, mashed potatoes, carrots and broccoli for tea. Fish bits very small. Washed up some and DH did the rest.

When mine were small the only way I could keep on top of things were by getting up at 6am. I would make a cup of tea and take it around as I did chores. I would wake anyone who needed it at 7and concentrate on the older two as they had a bus to catch to school. When DS 3 was a baby I aimed to have everything clean and tidy by 10:30 then walk to the shop and there would usually be another mum about so we would go for coffee at one of the houses back for 12:00 for lunch and kids picked up at bus stop at 3pm.
We had mum and toddlers twice a week and swimming once a week with babies and we took the other to lessons after school.
When I had the four I was at college full time and like That DD was a surprise( though I had always wanted 4-6) so it was harder. 6am start. 7am teens up for bus, DS3 to school here and then DD into the car to meet BF and hand over. I used to do the washing at night and it was hung out in morning. I had 24 long assignments some 100 pages and other tasks to complete and 100 observations some three pages long.

My friend with three said I don’t know how you did it and the younger ones said when they had kids they remembered. I was like that determined. I used to do catch up on Saturday mornings. Winter was harder because the boys played football for several teams and league games.Dh was away more of the month than he was home. I had a veggie and later two. So sometimes two different meals. The kids were expected to help so from 8 onwards - beds to make and dishes.

Oh and we had a pony ( to muck out and put out)and several cats.

I remember feeling very tired. I liked getting up early and having that hour to myself.

We had less stuff then so it was easier to keep tidy. I have inherited furniture and I bought some more when we moved here. I really ought to decluttering more. It is hard work being a mum. I think dad’s get it easier in some ways though some work very long hours. I think you just do what you can pat yourself on the back from time to time( because no other bugger is going to do it) and give yourself a kick up the bum sometimes. If you get in a real pickle buy the occasional ready meal they usually don’t know. We spend a lot of time cooking and washing up etc.

Cherry 🍒 waves👋 To everyone

Another late one, my sleeping pattern in all over the shop lately. I’m barely getting any sleep, my acid reflux/heartburn gets really bad around this time of the night and wakes me up, I’m struggling to get comfortable with the bump too, but I suppose it’s preparing me for the lack of sleep soon!. There’s loads of snow predicted from the weekend onwards, I’m stressing about it slightly as I have an antenatal appointment next week, I don’t drive so was banking on public transport being up and running to get to it, so hopefully the snow isn’t too bad. I’ve tried to get a fair bit done today, kept on top of cleaning the house and organised places for the new baby’s things. We also did ice painting, which was really fun!.

Well done on getting the assignment done THAT!

Sorry about nursery sing! I hope you’re feeling less poorly now though. I completely understand where you’re coming from, Elijah hasn’t really been anywhere other than a couple of parks, our flat or mum and nans house. He was 5 months old when lockdown began, it baffles me that his whole life has just been this!

red brilliant list, I’m in awe of what you did when you had little ones! I’m the opposite and get everything done on the nighttime, but I couldn’t do as much as you!. Sorry about the icy weather!

zoo acid reflux/heartburn/indigestion have been a nightmare this pregnancy. I get it quite bad due to Crohns anyway, but this pregnancy has made it so much worse!. Sorry to hear you and DD2 suffer from it! I hope you’re feeling better now!

Sorry about the stressful nursery drop off foxes, well done on getting through the workday!

I think that’s it Sing, it’s the lack of anything to look forward to! Just more weeks of the same old. I do try and remind myself of that though Red. We are so lucky to have beaches, a river, fields, all within walking distance, and I know things will be much easier with warmer weather. It’s just all a bit miserable in torrential rain Grin. At first I quite liked being able to stay at home with no pressure to do anything, but it’s all worn a bit thin. I’ve also hit peak ‘what’s the point’ with tidying toys Mc. Good to know I’m not alone.

I did really enjoy yesterday though everyone, thanks. After posting yesterday I only hoovered the living room, did a little dusting upstairs, and sorted through DD’s nursery artwork stash. Over half binned (Blush) and the rest I’ll photograph for her Photobooks as well as sticking up a few bits in the kitchen somewhere. Otherwise I read and netflixed and it was perfect. Feeling very restored.

Red you sound like you were very organised when yours were little.

Foxes that is not a feeble list, it was a work day!

Mc the restaurants near us who have been doing takeaway you do have to order in advance and get a scheduled delivery or pick up time so even the valentines one we should get when we want it. The usual takeaways have been very busy though.

Zoo the heart idea is lovely, and glad the wifi plan is going ok so far. Very sad about captain Tom. I must admit I felt very lucky, but also guilty, to get my vaccine at work. I see the logic in it a bit - protect the staff from catching Covid from patients and reduce staffing issues, and protect the vulnerable patients we are seeing, but I sort of didn’t feel I should be getting it before my elderly DGM and CV parents/step-parents/PIL (half of them are done now). We have quite high vaccination rates in our area, under 70 and CV are well under way from what I hear.

Wishing away the snow for you to get to your appointment Butta.

The house is allowed to get less attention when you’re in it less ED.

This morning I’ve fed the cats and DD and that’s about it. Another cuppa and then the TV is going off and we are going to start the day. Back later.
