Here we are on the February 2021 Flylady thread - this time last year we were just starting to realise that the world was going to change in a big, big way. The Fledgling threads have pulled us all together and been a great source of comfort and distraction from it all.

This is a friendly housekeeping thread based (loosely... Extremely loosely sometimes 😂) on Flylady's housekeeping system . Welcome one and all, lurkers and long-time posters alike. Join in, hang out, but above all remember you are not behind, just jump in where you are.

The beauty of Flylady is that you don't have to flatten yourself trying to get your house clean to begin the routine upkeep; the first - and only - thing she asks you to do is to shine your kitchen sink. Routines - morning, afternoon and evening - are built gradually through her Baby Steps. To those, you add a Daily Focus and a weekly area to concentrate cleaning on. By the end of a month, your whole house will have had some attention. If you miss a bit, never mind, it'll come round next month!

For this month, I'll be posting daily links to the Launch Pad on the Flylady site so you can follow the daily focus and cleaning missions. You can sign up to receive emails from Flylady, but we suggest you don't - she sends masses, which will clog up your inbox and drive you insane into the bargain.

Because this thread has been running a while, there are some acronyms we use to make life easier
S&S - swish and swipe, round the bathroom to keep it acceptable daily
LOL - load of laundry. No, we don't find washing that funny!
Ned - born of a typo, a mythical being who assists with laundry mountains
The pointy stick ----> to motivate people
PO3 - Power of 3, if you can only face a few tasks. People often find groups of 3 tasks stack up over a day!
The Naughty Corner - where we head when it's all Too Much. Usually stocked with fresh coffee, fluffy throws, delicious snacks and the opportunity to sit quietly with friends or build a blanket fort and sulk in it if you need to.

During the Pandemic, we have also been using the KCC or Keep Calm Corner, invented by long-time poster / thread leader SC. This is a regular dose of memes, questions for discussion, random trivia etc to distract us from the rest of the world. All contributions welcome!

Remember - No Fledgling Left Behind!

Waders- 🍾🥂✔🎺🎺🎺🎶 weldone to your Dd!

Dancingtomusic · 11/02/2021 09:13

Mc- I hope you find your shopping in the garage.

Zoo- what a cute pic of a paw! I miss having cats as they are so cute! Glad scoutcat is ok, tho abit bald. 🐱

Dancingtomusic · 11/02/2021 09:18

Up- sorry to hear about your teaching friend too.
If you dont mind me asking, what is the covid research collecting data on?

I just watched Good Morning Briton and they said Long Covid is a real thing! Yes! I hope they do research into it to help people.

Mc3209 · 11/02/2021 09:30

Waders massive well done to DD! 🎉🎉🎉

Shopping wasn't in the garage and footprints weren't human.. Must have been Mr Fox visiting in the night. Called customer support, delivery was cancelled due to weather conditions, but the driver marked the whole van as 'delivered' by mistake. Mystery solved.

EventuallyDeleted · 11/02/2021 09:48

Morning all,

Mc how annoying about the shopping.

Zoo - gorgeous toe beans! One of mine would tolerate toothbrushing, the other would have your arm off if you tried.

Red - we have an M&S Food which is rubbish for SD too, they limit number but the numbers are too high. I try to only go in when it's quiet. None of the supermarkets here have one-way aisles but Sainsburys and Waitrose have much wider aisles than M&S and Aldi so they feel safer. Our swimming club uses several local authority pools (covers a huge area) but there are lots of smaller swim schools which used school pools, private ones in people's gardens etc, this is quite an affluent area.

Dancing - thank you for your kind words, the swimming club stuff is tricky, but I quite like the challenge, it's not too dissimilar to parts of my paid work, which is why I volunteered. Glad it's over for another couple of years though - we do a "lite" version in the alternate years which isn't so bad. No tic-tacs, just endless cups of tea.

Waders - huge well done to DD! I remember all the stress about the wrong exam board etc. What a good result.

Day off today, it's a beautiful day but still below zero. About to get off to the allotment for a walk and to take my veg scraps to the compost bin there.

Links:

Thursday is Errand Day, our mission is to sort out our plastic bags, cling film etc. Flight plan is here.

Just realised I haven't posted any tadas for ages all month

Tada for yesterday:

1xLOL
2 hours work
Run
Yoga
Decluttered the kitchen counter corner of doom (fruit bowl, pen pots etc).
Mulled over kitchen designs

Mc3209 · 11/02/2021 10:18

Cross post that. Morning! Everyone is so productive already! I am still in bed, tinkering on my phone.
Well, I guess groceries are sort of sorted.
Should probably get up...

merryhouse · 11/02/2021 10:48

great news waders

S2 has mocks for the weeks beginning 8 and 15 March - isn't that when they might be back in? That will be fun.

TaDa
did the whole training course despite almost falling over with boredom 3/4 way through (some things really don't need additional information to what's on the PowerPoint slide...)
got a whole load of emails deleted (I'm now almost down to 800 in the inbox, about half of them read...)
showed S2 how to make cocoa as we ran out of drinking chocolate
made shopping list
weighed up which site to believe on whether shoulder is good for roasting; eventually decided the UK-based one was probably the better bet (confirmation bias having nothing to do with it guv)

ToDo
prepare lunch for before 12:00 lecture
make and drink tea
make pastry
gird loins
walk to Tesco for £40 shop, being met by H to carry home
put away shopping
make pie filling
list what's in freezer (again)
make pies
while pies cook

  • prepare veg, make gravy
  • do the kitchen missions (at least 2 are tick-box exercises)
  • wipe over the light fitting
sort out PCC emails (at very least get them all into one place)

I am not a cat.

merryhouse · 11/02/2021 10:51

ooh, and another TaDa:

made final decision on curtains for the dining room and (watched as H) ordered them. Only decorated it 22 years ago... (currently have blackout linings hung up, clashing horrifically with the cream walls and with holes along the storage folds)

SingToTheSky · 11/02/2021 10:54

What a pain mc :(

Yay waders so awesome!

Dancing I seriously hope that a) long covid gets proper recognition and investigation, and b) as a by-product, it increases understanding around CFS/ME and other chronic illnesses. Somehow I don’t hold out much hope though.

TMI GROSS ALERT 🚨 (sorry)
Was in two minds as to whether to post this, but frankly I need the advice and the reassurance!

So we discovered last night that Cagletini has worms 😫🤢🤬 I am grossed out. Was also mortified wondering how she’d got them when we’ve barely been out but then I googled and it seems they take 2 weeks to hatch, so that’s from before nursery shut. I’m amazed it still happened with all the extra hand washing but perhaps it means it’s not such a bad infection as fewer eggs? Maybe? 😫 Anyway it was definitely the first appearance, she only uses the potty not the loo so we would have noticed. She’s not been itchy either.

So today has been designated spring cleaning (in the absence of being able to dowse the entire house in bleach, or burn it), DH went to get the medicine and a few other bits while I got on with more cleaning.

Anyone who has dealt with this, what else do I need to do other than towels, bedding, door handles etc? Disinfecting potties between every use obviously. I’m most concerned about toys. Quarantine or wash and risk them falling apart? DS especially has heaps of teddies.

Aaaargh.

Right sorry gross part over.

ta da so far
🦠aired house
🦠put towels away
🦠put clean laundry away
🦠scrubbed door and window handles downstairs
🦠Cagletini up dressed and breakfasted
🦠scrubbed cupboard door and drawer handles in kitchen
🦠scrubbed front of microwave
🦠blanket LOL (DH had done the first one already)
🦠scrubbed and antibac sprayed table
🦠dusted piano while marvelling at how dusty it got in a few days
🦠hung up rest of clean towels straight from dryer
🦠put flannels away
🦠got DS to empty DW
🦠got DD1 to antibac Cagletini’s tumble mat and wobble board
🦠got DD1 set up with work
🦠put breakfast stuff and random mugs in DW (gosh darn it I love it SO MUCH)
🦠threw some rubbish away
🦠scrubbed and antibac sprayed sink in downstairs loo

Redsquirrel5 · 11/02/2021 11:30

MC I sorted my teasmade( present from DS1 years ago ) so still in bed too. Really need poky stick. Have had two mugs of tea. Late to sleep last night but had a good sleep. Just being lazy and CBA as I have the Room of Doom waiting for me.
Sorry about your shopping so annoying.

Dancingglad someone else is a card saver. I thought I might sort into categories in a box once I get everything else organised. Yes, to arty ones I put those up. I bought a ribbon and pegs so you can change them and have a large heart that has wires to push them into. I used to have some on the fridge but took them off and had a large notice board with some on but changed that when kitchen redone.
ED no one here with a pool. Private house with one in next village and a couple in city which let them out part time. Some of my cousins have pools, not in UK. I thought I might complain to M&S because if no one does it won’t change. We went at lunchtime 1pm because thought it might be quieter and it was when we went in but then suddenly became busy. It isn’t very busy and just two trolleys wide. It is back to Booths for us. Wide aisles and people mostly keeping distances and polite. We are going to shop in that town instead of city. Easy parking, great charity shops for books, quirky coffee shops and easy walk about. What is not to like?

I did that drawer on Monday haha one ahead of Flylady.

Waders What a 🌟 congratulations to her.

That great start to the day.

Zoo glad to hear he is improving. Also getting odd predictive text. Laughed at Hokey Pokey thought you had the pointy stick. Re read my post to find it had changed through to threw. Looked like I was having a tantrum😂 can usually work them out. It is difficult with a phone.

Just to say I am up now. I had to get up for a wee after all the tea and S&S the bathroom. Looked in room of doom arrrgghh! Not sure where to start today. Think I will take all my felting stuff out so that should make room to sort other stuff.

🍒👋🍒👋🍒🍒🍒👋 to this e I have missed.

Stilllivinginazoo · 11/02/2021 12:38

sing I'd get some napisan and add couple spoons to the drawer and low temp wash with a pod in drum
I remember dd1 having worms.i went loopy at nursery at school as only place and in those days Letters Were Sent Home over nuts/worms and actions expected to be taken..
If it's plastic/washable wash it up.honestly it'll be ok.i must admit I hated that more than nits tbh, even tho we seems riddled with those itchy fuckers(nits) for about 4years as dd2 seemed to draw them to her and by that point there were parents that didn't bother treating as it was a foregone conclusion they'd be back the week after...

Stilllivinginazoo · 11/02/2021 12:41

Oh,and for what it's worth she only needed to touch a toy and put hands in her mouth that another kids had touched after a quick scratch....

Tada
Crochet done
DS bedding in drier
Towels load one folded and put away
Next load wash in
Lunch orders been taken, just about start prepping as girls have 1-145,D's has 1245-130.be nice next week to eat together without someone freaking they'll be late for lessons!

HillsBesideTheSea · 11/02/2021 13:08

Teen is stomping around calling me an arse.
School back for 8th with mocks. Oh fucking great? His ass has failed. right anyone got any advice on resiting GCSEs? How to find a college etc etc...

Sorted my exams out. But now realised i don't know if i need a covid test before hospital appointment. I can find no info on it. And i am not sure if i remembered to ask. Will need to try to ring tomo.

Need to also find direct line for opticians as will be able to schedule that in after the hospital appointment.

Online classes here. but with various small tasks thrown in around the things.

SingToTheSky · 11/02/2021 13:10

Cheers zoo we don’t have napisan or similar atm so I think for now I’ll just bag all the toys up (we wouldn’t have time to wash them today anyway) and then wash them gradually when we can get our hands on some. Still got bedding to do. DS is clearing up his Lego so we can vacuum and I need to clear our floor too 😳 we vacuum the living room at least once a day, but upstairs is definitely neglected 😳

HillsBesideTheSea · 11/02/2021 13:12

If you can get pumpkin seeds into her diet it helps to reduce the risk of worms. You give high levels of them to animals to help reduce worm load. Just gotta be careful on the amount for small child and not rely on as a cure. More preventative. Memory wants to tell me that it numbs them so they get flushed out the system more readily so to speak.

Do your own research on this though. My memory has been know to lie to me plus animal husbandry (goat welfare) and child welfare are two different things and i am not sure if it is for the same species of worm. cos there be lots of worm species

(sorry not helping at all am i) Blush

Redsquirrel5 · 11/02/2021 13:16

Yep, had them here.
You need to treat everyone in the family. DD got them from nursery. I think she maybe had them from school too. She was mortified about that as about six. Only two classes infants and junior. Teacher very sensible so included it in lessons.

Hot wash for towels bikers 60 degrees.

Haha 🚵‍♀️ bikers. It was knickers! 🤣😂🤣😂😭

Ihave been in RofD for an hour and now got distracted. I have found a few of DAunts cookbooks one from 1947 and recipes with powder egg etc. It does mention oranges which surprised me. Also very small and old Good Housekeeping book of Hot and Cold Puddings. This is the aunt that knew and went to school with some of the chefs of the time. They were in a lovely straw basket which I think I will use for shopping in the summer.
So I have a box of books to be given away. Found some more cards and groaned but they are new ones birthday, Easter and a few Christmas so put those aside. Some ones to make too. Put them with To make cards.

Back in for twenty minutes. Then kitchen table to do. Zoo glad to hear I am not only one still wiping shopping. It takes ages doesn’t it. I try and decant what I can, wash hands then do the rest with Method and a cloth.

Have some crossed posts later.

Redsquirrel5 · 11/02/2021 13:23

Hills quick scan.

Normally they can do resits in January. Some colleges do Maths and English as evening class but be careful as I had DD starting Maths at college and after three weeks he told me I had to pay £400 and she was the only one having to pay. Other school students and then some mums trying to Up skills to go back to work. He might be better to stay at school cost wise. It may have changed and may have to change now.

HillsBesideTheSea · 11/02/2021 13:27

He can't stay at school if he fails. if they sit the mocks when they go back when he has not engaged with online learning he will fail, if they remain with online learning he will fail. He is an arse so he will fail.

SO yeah. it will be a what the hell do we do for september if he fails kinda thing.

HillsBesideTheSea · 11/02/2021 13:28

I can't even find colleges around here that even offer A levels anymore they are all industry qualifications, Btecs and t-tests. So god knows what GCSE provision is like

SingToTheSky · 11/02/2021 13:44

Most round here seem to offer English and maths but science seems hard to come by.

Oh good point about knickers (I’m not sure bikers would fit in the machine) at 90, I’ll separate them all out and ask the kids for their undies too and wash everyone’s together. We’ve all had our tablet now. It felt like a trip to the vet 😂 thankfully Cagletini chewed hers quite happily.
