Decluttering one item a day (and having nowhere to put it!) – thread number 16

stealthninjamum · 23/01/2021 20:33

Once again this tireless group of mumsnetters are decluttering our houses by getting rid of one item a day. Of course this year I’m just piling the stuff behind the settee because the charity shops are all closed but luckily noone’s allowed to visit me to see my clutter mountain.

This is an accountability and general chatter thread and newbies and old hands are always welcome to join in the conversation while we keep working on our houses making them clearer, organised, and clutter free.

This year some of us are trying to get rid of 2021 items and some of us are working through the Toss app that tells us what to get rid of each day. Then we report back on the thread with an update.

Previous thread here.

So it’s been a week and I still haven’t finished sorting our room out! I’m so fed up and can feel myself slipping. We got a puppy end of last year and I am so fed up the dog steals anything and everything you can’t tidy as everything needs to be kept out of reach of the dog she even try’s to grab cleaning cloths.
We got her unexpectedly so hadn’t prepared the house for a puppy so loads of stuff was just piled up on sides out of her way. It’s just a never ending cycle of walking, washing muddy paws, cleaning the bathroom feed and repeat. I’m fed up of messy fields and dog stuff everywhere. Dh was supposed to do most of the walking but that hasn’t happened due to illness just so fed up at the moment.

I’m trying to start to follow TOMM again! To week 1 this week so see how we go. I sorted out the cutlet drawer this morning and got rid of 6 carol syringes -and a few medicine spoons and some curly straws that are never used and a pain to clean.

I’m now sat on the floor with a flask pack on while Ds plays on line with a friend they are in our room so I can’t finish in there at the moment.

Sorry not really delcuttering just needing to rant

lazyakita · 22/02/2021 18:31

Out:

  • 5 ill fitting/uncomfortable tights/underwear/bras as Toss suggested the underwear drawer today.
  • broken fairy lights
  • lonely dustpan

353 total. Nothing new in.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/02/2021 18:50

Only outs today are random bits of rubbish in the playroom, and my daughter's mold collection. Do hope it wasn't a scientific breakthrough she was planning on there!

RoosterRoosteringFree · 22/02/2021 19:01

Hiya, never posted before. Here’s what I’ve gotten rid of:

Day 1- broken apple corer binned
-Ripped laundry bag binned
-Pile of receipts shredded

Day 2- two large bin bags of clothes to charity clothes bin (mostly baby clothes but also a coat of mine and pair of shoes)

Day 3- packet of size 3 nappies and a box of chocolates from cupboard taken to supermarket food bank

Day 4 - a chipped, cracked cup binned
-More receipts binned

Day 5 (today) - pair of hole-y leggings binned. I was cleaning shower today and they got stained with bleach. Definitely had their day.
-2 bottles of empty shower gel and a bottle of shampoo recycled.

I’m drowning in junk in my house 😭 I wish I could get it all out in one day. It’s hard motivating myself to sort stuff when it’s just going to sit there anyway because the charity shops are shut.

footprintsintheslow · 22/02/2021 20:40

Day 166:

Emails
Desk picked up from freecycle
Two letters posted with books in for friends.
Ood sauce gone

EllieQ · 22/02/2021 23:09

2021 day 53 update:

No decluttering today as I didn’t have any time - busy day at work, quick dinner, then DD had Rainbows (over Zoom), then I had book club (over Zoom). I’d forgotten how drained I feel after a day of work. Back to decluttering tomorrow!

SleepingStandingUp · 23/02/2021 00:14

What kind of junk you got @RoosterRoosteringFree , we might have ideas for you. Certainly for books and clothes

I'm decluttering sleep apparently because you know, who needs it at night? Better to scream and generally be miserable.

Nothing out today altho packaging from in things went into bin immediately. In things were special pencil for DS to help him write neater and a red tail (devil set) for his Knuckles costume. He isn't keen on the horns so whilst I'm contemplating keeping them, he'd be in favour of getting rid so they may end up on the charity bag, which is fine. I had to buy the set for the tail as it's VERY hard to buy red Tails on their own that aren't butt plugs. Yes, really.

MrsTidyHouse · 23/02/2021 06:25

Just and no more keeping my head above water by tidying and sorting. School uniforms handed down from larger child to smaller. Outgrown now bagged up and ready for donation.

Recyclables go straight into recycling trolley. Careful meal planning and supermarket orders mean much less food wasted. This week, only two mushy bananas.

stealthninjamum · 23/02/2021 08:50

Welcome rooster you’ve made a good start. I’m drowning in junk at the moment too but i find the most time consuming bit for me is to make a decision to get rid of something and so I do have about fifteen bags of stuff that have been sitting around since before the November lockdown and also emptying cupboards, but at least I know I’ve done the mentally hard part. It helps that no one can come to my house too.

So most importantly, which section is charity shops??

Decluttering one item a day (and having nowhere to put it!) – thread number 16
ememem84 · 23/02/2021 09:15

Non essential.

Vinorosso74 · 23/02/2021 09:15

I would assume 12th April but guess it might vary between shops and when they have enough staff/volunteers to reopen. The clothes I have to donate are winter things which they won't really want in spring!
I can picture us all queuing outside charity shops across the country desperate to offload our decluttering.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/02/2021 09:29

It stops being illegal to go out March 29th so hoping Facebook lady will start collecting then but I need a few good weekends of nice weather to get the garage sorted so I can even get to the stuff now!!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/02/2021 09:31

Charity shops will be overwhelmed!

Vinorosso74 · 23/02/2021 09:39

The ones around here stopped taking donations last year! Luckily, we managed to drop a bag of books off at one.
I volunteer at a cat adoption centre (well out of lockdown) and the amount of towels donated was huge! Useful when the tumble dryer keeps breaking but there is little storage space for them all.

stealthninjamum · 23/02/2021 09:43

I assumed 12th April but maybe later depending on getting them organised again. It’ll be lovely seeing the charity shop volunteers again because in my area they’re all retired and The volunteering is a big part of their life. I have a favourite charity shop I donate stuff to and they’re lovely there.

Dd2 has a craft project to do today and luckily we are well equipped with bits of wool, card, googly eyes (for no obvious reason) so I guess those will be my outs.

@SleepingStandingUp I’ve got an attic full of cooking equipment and kitchen stuff. My husband is a former chef and wants to be the one to sort through all that stuff.
Then there’s clothes, toys (so many toys!), baby equipment (bouncer, bath, Moses basket and stand, breast pump, bottle steriliser) and books. I’ve listed some clothes for sale on depop. If they don’t sell soon I’m going to try eBay. I’m taking most of the clothes straight to the charity bins though.
I might try music magpie or ziffit for the books. I did that once a couple of years ago. It took hours, comparing prices for every book.
I also randomly have a lot of vases and pink photo frames I don’t want anymore.

stealthninjamum · 23/02/2021 13:20

That sounds hard rooster. Personal question - and you don’t need to answer - but do you think you’re going to have more kids. I think the easiest quick win is getting rid of those baby things, babies and toddlers things take up so much space.

My other personal question (and again don’t feel you need to answer) is whether you need the money. I used to spend a lot of time selling things but don’t have the time at the moment so I would be happy to get rid of it all.

With my stbexh I found he wouldn’t declutter anything. I used to get his stuff and put it in a pile on his side of the bed to deal with. I do wonder why he left Grin

@RoosterRoosteringFree icollectclothes will take clothes and toys and books if you don't mind getting nothing for them. You can order a collection online and just pack it onto anything you have, they're not terribly fussy as long as it's clean, dry and liftable.

I do sell some clothes on Vinted but it can be a faff so I tend to price low and do discounts for bundles as I don't want to be posting one pair of trousers at a time.

Re books I scan a dozen on each and see who pays the most / takes the most for the bundle. So if one bunch is 7 books for £5 and one is 8 for £4 I go with the former. Then I rescan anything left with the other app iyswim

ememem84 · 23/02/2021 16:02

haven't yet managed to get rid of anything today, but have smashed through the laundry. 4 loads today all hung up outside drying happily in the sun and wind...

am going to do another sweep of the kids books when dh goes to pick them up from nursery. should have 45 minutes ish before they get home to do a blast. i have already spied some artwork which can be binned.i feel sort of bad ditching it, but they bring it home and never look at it again. . .

i used up a sample of eye cream yesterday. nothing that made a big dent in anything though.

Miaowse · 23/02/2021 16:16

I’ve had a quiet few days - barely ticking over as someone else said.

Today so far I’ve dumped some flour, an open and very out of date bag of peanuts and some OOD cake sprinkles (which surely don’t go off, but I will never use them so no point giving them precious cupboard space).

stealthninjamum · 23/02/2021 17:10

I just cleaned my main larder cupboard and somehow made it look much emptier just by moving a few things around. The only item to throw away is a packet of ood bread sauce. None of us eat it, so I probably bought it for exmil.

Hi, can I join ? I’m still reading the thread through . Not sure if I’ve already been here on another thread a long time ago or was it somewhere else since I’ve been decluttering for a few years now .Before we moved to our current house we’ve been renting from last Feb while we are selling our old house and our new one is being built I decluttered and organised little by little for about 4 y and had everything in labeled boxes some are in a storage locker atm . Our new house should be ready in the summer so before we move there I want to go through everything in this house again . There’s so much less here than the old house but plenty to toss I’m sure as always . We got rid of huge amounts from our attic and cupboards ,and the rest is boxed up ( everyone’s memory boxes ,2 kids baby and toddler etc clothes by age since I was doing ivf for a few years now probably going to have to forget about it so they will go when I’m psychologically ready , the few toys and books I’ve kept for grandkids , kids art etc, school books I need to look through and only keep a few ) . The storage locker I’m not sure we will need in the future since the new house has a big attic room we will have divided partly into storage and other use by putting up a wall later . At that point I will go through the boxes from storage and I’m sure some of the contents can go from there too .
My speed is generally slow because I have many health problems and I’m in pain daily so I can’t do much . I always have spurts of action followed by periods of nothing happening . In the old house I stopped counting somewhere around nearing 200 big bin bags and cardboard boxes or large items like high chairs leaving the house . We have two kids and a new puppy and my husband has been working long days from home for the last year so they impede my effort too . Especially the younger one wants to keep most things including every scrap of paper ... my DH is too busy working and has taken on most of DD homeschooling although her school has been very good with it , cooking and we share housework with our teen but he’s in the GCSE year so busy and stressed enough . I haven’t done any clear out here since I did before moving in but have been steadily been putting too old / broken clothes away , books , puzzles etc into charity shop bag and DH took one big load in the end of summer / fall at some point when they opened up and has taken stuff fo dump there’s a clothing collection and a rag bank there also a reuse area with book collection etc but now things are here in boxes waiting to go again on the top floor landing and the under stairs cupboard .
So far this year I have gotten rid off :

  • 50 + books from DD room , living room bookshelf and other ones we’ve finished reading recently . Now I have about 25 in a bedroom drawer left to read that are then going . Others still have quite a few in their bedrooms and the living room shelf so we’re not going to run out anytime soon .I’m
aiming to read minimum 4 books a month instead of staring at tv or the iPad this year but some are on kindle not in physical form
  • 10 large kids books like old annuals , Guinness World Records book, encyclopaedias we had multiples of somehow
  • 30 DVDs I’ve checked are all available on Netflix, Amazon or ITunes if we want to see them again or watch with our youngest for the first time . Now we only have kids school plays etc left all other DVDs are gone after several clear outs
  • 10 console games , kids generally claims they need them all so this is a real win !
  • 5 remaining normal music cds now only have a few in my own languages and DD story and kids music ones I’ll weed through soon . FH got rid of all of his in one fell swoop a couple of clear outs ago 😄. We have Apple Music subs so really don’t need them anymore
  • 10 board and card games ( we are trying to play our way through the rest we have lots of a bit difficult because of the kids big age difference the younger wants to keep ones every one else is sick off and she’s too young to play some the older can )
-5 puzzles that are either now too easy for DD or DS has finished I’m not storing for the next 7 y ( their age difference) for DD to be able to do
  • a sack of old socks , pants , pyjamas and T-shirts with holes or that are worn out other otherwise to the rag bank
  • a huge bin bag full off clothes from my wardrobe I had already throughly gone through before moving here ( a few I’ll just never use that are brand new going to charity shop box ) rest are ones I’ve worn for years that are just too worn out now and can go . 2 big cardigan coats , 2 long skirts , 6 dresses and a shirt at least .
  • piles of colouring books and random paper, pens and rubbers etc , old play dough from DD kitchen art drawer that she organised with DH for the first time ever it normally takes me ages to go through it every few months
  • 14 unused Toucan craft boxes I subs to for DD when little then she lost interest so they piled up they’re going to charity shop minus our name and address
  • piles of paper from a rattan trunk in the kitchen that housed DD homeschool stuff from last y we don’t need went to recycling . I need to still look through the old work books and toss them not keep as I have countless of others In the storage locker
still have to weed through
  • 4 dress up costumes that were too small and / or worn out ,good ones going to charity
  • 4 pairs of old kids shoes that were too small and / or broken plus some flip flops
I need to work out a ball park total haven’t done that yet and have probably forgotten things . We are also working our way through DD old presents ;craft ,activity and science etc kits she’s got tons of she’s been doing 1/2 a week and so far has used up 3 Toucan craft boxes of the 5 she kept , a figurine painting set , a sharks tooth digging kit , A National geographic geods one , a chocolate coin maker that is going it didn’t work very well but she wanted to keep of course anyway ( it’s going !) . Oh and have tossed some dog toys that have been destroyed by the puppy and he’s grown out of two dog carriers already ... more new dog toys coming in though . My goal isn’t minimalism or perfect labeled order I have no energy for that I’m too sick ,but just to get rid of what nobody needs and have a place for everything . I want things organised roughly and out of sight preferably! I’ve stalled atm because I’ve been so poorly that anything extra is too much but once I’ll get going again I will update . Generally I am putting things away daily ...
Nordicmom · 23/02/2021 17:43

Oh yes and we are just either donating everything or it’s going to dump or recycling neither of us has time or energy for selling except for my DH bikes or some boats etc he’s selling from his mom’s house .

Miaowse · 23/02/2021 18:10

Wow @Nordicmom sounds like you’ve achieved a huge amount!
