Decluttering one item a day (and having nowhere to put it!) – thread number 16

stealthninjamum · 23/01/2021 20:33

Once again this tireless group of mumsnetters are decluttering our houses by getting rid of one item a day. Of course this year I’m just piling the stuff behind the settee because the charity shops are all closed but luckily noone’s allowed to visit me to see my clutter mountain.

This is an accountability and general chatter thread and newbies and old hands are always welcome to join in the conversation while we keep working on our houses making them clearer, organised, and clutter free.

This year some of us are trying to get rid of 2021 items and some of us are working through the Toss app that tells us what to get rid of each day. Then we report back on the thread with an update.

Previous thread here.

We have til tomorrow, a child addicted to dress up, clear ideas on his favourite books and a house full of costume bits. It makes so much difference.

And if he's going to moan, tell him he's doing tomorrow!!
Can you try the moving one thing from the room if you're leaving kinda thing just to keep it rocking over and at least your consciousness pricked?

I have had a tough couple of days with dd2 refusing to do any homeschooling. As a result I’ve been sat next to her while she has her live lessons and not really done any housework or decluttering other than broken pencils / pens and bits of artwork.

Anyway I have created the next thread.

I’ll go back and read your updates now.

Determined to read and catch up on this week of the thread but for now...

Day 176:
4 children's books to a friend
1 drinks bottle recycled
Photos and emails
Reusable breast pads in bag for a friend when I can see her in the future.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/03/2021 20:41

341: had a Christmas present I wasn't sure about, it fell off the bookcase so one weird pointy tea light holder in the bin...

One day left of home schooling peeps

Gave away some hobby paints today... will watch next thread!

Unexpected out of 12 bits of DC clothes being picked up tomorrow. A bit more cash for their money boxes. Just happened to spot the request and had the pics ready to send as I’ve been trying to sell as bundles. Obv they wanted bits from each bundle but I don’t care - they will be out of the house tomorrow!

ememem84 · 04/03/2021 21:44

Sheet mask currently being used.

SandAndSea · 05/03/2021 00:53

Page 10 already! I think I've been behind for the whole of this thread but I'm trying hard not to feel bad about it. I've slowed down a bit on the decluttering recently. Just a few bits out here and there. "Bits & bobs" are continuing to haunt me so I'll need to have a bit of a blitz soon.

Tonight's items:

  • 1 packet from a lovely moisturiser which I had forgotten about but found and will now enjoy using.
  • 1 too-small (used) soap, found in a travel bag.

I'm also half-way through a diy job which is using up the stuff I bought for it. I'm hoping to finish that this weekend.

Yesterday's outs were used general tidying really... Finished shampoo, bits of abandoned art work, my sanity to a game of Monopoly...

Last day of home learning hopefully! Better try the school shoes on...

SingToTheSky · 05/03/2021 07:47

Couple of outs recently. I got rid of a old plastic box that had a load of pens in, I didn’t even like the box we were given (horrible colours) so the pens are in a tray ready to sort (need to paint the wooden drawers for them)

Also got rid of a cuddly toy and some old socks that will never find their partner now, plus some old dressing up stuff

stealthninjamum · 05/03/2021 08:36

vinorosso hope your dd gets the school she wants, that must be so stressful for her and I hope you get your appointment soon.

ellieq hope you’re feeling better.

miaowse I feel the same, but even a few bits of paper or receipts is an achievement so it’s always good to post.

We have one of those big Ikea square boxes with holes in it full of teddies. Dd2 chucked them all out of the box yesterday looking for a teddy. I told her if she didn’t tidy them away I would throw them away. She announced she didn’t want them so that’s 21 stuffed toys in a bag to go!

OP posts:
Gassylady · 05/03/2021 08:55

@stealthninjamum are any of them “proper” teddies? . If so you could put them by for the teddy trust that collect for children that literally have nothing in refugee camps. I have a box sat waiting to be posted once they reopen after COVID. No real progress as I’ve got very fed up with work and now a twisted knee too can’t be bothered to be turning out cupboards and drawers - misery loves company!

stealthninjamum · 05/03/2021 09:47

Thanks gassylady sadly no real teddies. I know someone mentioned somewhere else to get rid of teddies but I couldn't find it yesterday when I set up the new thread. I will try to add both to thread 18 as I know people always struggle to get rid of teddies.

It's made me a bit sad. dd1 said she didn't want any of them and dd2 refused to look (just being difficult) and will undoubtably miss them but I can't back down now and it'll maybe be a lesson that if she continues to empty boxes over the floor for me to clear up the contents will go. This happens multiple times a day.

Posted adult DS some spare (for me) items for his hobby.

I have a project I want to work on this weekend which would be 'upcycling' some materials we have lying around. Involves teen DS teaching me some woodcraft skills, even. Wish me luck.

I am watching other thread, too. :)

SleepingStandingUp · 05/03/2021 17:26

342: Pulled out a couple of cardigans and or tops that got too small over lockdown but the tops at least must be replaced. All barely worn with lockdown so will be kept for DTwins as I imagine they'll have the same issue with big heads and small jumper head holes

Might declutter DH to the park with his Mom Saturday and try and have a good tidy so I can get back to decluttering. I keep thinking I should do X project but then stop because I should tidy first...
