Decluttering one item a day (and having nowhere to put it!) – thread number 16

stealthninjamum · 23/01/2021 20:33

Once again this tireless group of mumsnetters are decluttering our houses by getting rid of one item a day. Of course this year I’m just piling the stuff behind the settee because the charity shops are all closed but luckily noone’s allowed to visit me to see my clutter mountain.

This is an accountability and general chatter thread and newbies and old hands are always welcome to join in the conversation while we keep working on our houses making them clearer, organised, and clutter free.

This year some of us are trying to get rid of 2021 items and some of us are working through the Toss app that tells us what to get rid of each day. Then we report back on the thread with an update.

Previous thread here.

Last night I didn’t declutter a whole lot but I did get some other things done that have been needed.

I’ve said before I struggle to maintain my home - and this, the last few months, has extended to taking care of myself. So yesterday I tried to reestablish a good night time hygiene routine so this morning’s me woke up feeling good and doing things like making my bed properly. I wouldn’t admit this to people I know, but have truly neglected so much, especially myself and I’ve got to get better at it.

On the other hand, this morning I decluttered (clothing recycling bank) some bedsheets, some old pyjamas and yet more knickers. In the interest of self care, I’ve ordered some new clothes, underwear and nightwear and its started trickling in so getting rid of the worn stuff as it comes in.

I also gathered up all the loose coppers in my house - where do they come from???!! - my bank however has reduced their hours to pretty much mon-fri school hours which is an utter pain, I will have to drop them into the machine on my week off later this month.

Well done Hag, that's a massive step Flowers and will make such a long term difference to your life

Vino did she get in?

Feel like I've had more outs that ins but they're generally replacements. I really need to sort the junk at the back of the room as it's stopping me doing anything else

Vinorosso74 · 03/03/2021 09:28

Sleeping she got her 3rd choice which is fine but she really wants 1st choice (it's a great all round school) so I'll see where she is on waiting list and hope for movement in the next 6 months!

SleepingStandingUp · 03/03/2021 09:41

Ah that's tough but fingers crossed

SydneyCarton · 03/03/2021 10:54

The cassettes I listed on Olio were collected yesterday and I’ve earmarked another duplicated audiobook which I’ve already downloaded to give away as well. Schools and nursery are back next week so I can drop more stuff off at the textile banks at lunchtime. Can’t wait until charity shops are up and running again to donate a load of books but I expect they’ll be overwhelmed at first.

stealthninjamum · 03/03/2021 11:55

I was up before 7 tying to get organised for the day.I chucked out lots of papers, drawings, paper aeroplanes and tidied the dining room ready for homeschooling. I organised dd2s worksheets and scanned this week’s work.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/03/2021 14:08

Ten cookbooks in the book box.

DD is currently turning a cardboard box into a Roman shield for History/Art....can't wait for HS to be over...

lazyakita · 03/03/2021 14:23

I feel guilty for being absent for a few days. I had a panic as a friend sent me a care package. I tried really hard to (nicely!) impress upon them that I'm desperate to declutter due to moving at some point and just for my MH in general. Well, the package arrived and I'm blown away by the generosity, but also really stressed out at receiving so many things I don't want/need. There's loads of skincare (that I'm sadly allergic to), makeup, reusable coffee cups, decorative items and a purse. I'm going through it all currently and won't count anything as an 'in' yet as I think I may regift or donate most items, which I feel horrible about but I just can't keep everything!

I got rid of the following:
4 old placemats
A shampoo & matching conditioner that don't suit my hair
6 paperback books
4 posters
A hardback book

Up to 394 things out. I bought 8 storage containers to help me organise under sinks and in the office, bringing me to 22 items in.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 03/03/2021 14:34

@lazyakita do you have any charities that help out low income families? Local to me theres a hub that was set up to help the community and people who were struggling. They are collecting items to make little pamper packages for mums to have a small mothers day gift. Mums who have very little/ nothing so unlikely to recieve anything.

I havent been very productive this last week, ive felt wiped out. The house is still a mess, the ebay stuff is slowly selling though. Just need to upload the stuff that hasn't sold on Facebook onto eBay.

Food shopping coming today and a soap dish (to use up the many bars i have in the cupboard and are much better for my hands)

The kids have just rung a friend and are playing roblox together, last time they were occupied for over an hour. so I'm going to take this opportunity to have a quick tidy round and see if I can gather some stuff to declutter!

Miaowse · 03/03/2021 14:57

@Vinorosso74 fingers crossed for movement on the school waiting list and hope your breast clinic appointment comes through quickly as must be a stressful wait. Flowers

I have also totally fallen off the decluttering bandwagon. I’ve been reading along but what puts I have had have been so minor i was embarrassed to post. Hoping for much better progress next week.

Vinorosso74 · 03/03/2021 16:03

Thanks, it is at the back of my mind but GP said the appointment should be within 2 weeks.
Cleaned the cupboard out under the kitchen sink today as it was a bit chaotic. I found loads of those lids for putting laundry liquid in the machine, kept two-one on the current bottle and one on the new one! Also, out some dried up wipes, some unidentifiable cleaner, some bathroom cleaner which I don't like and some descaler which I used to do the coffee machine and kettle.
Doing well on using food up out the freezer so I can give that a proper clean and sort out.

ememem84 · 03/03/2021 18:28

Changed my watch strap today because old one was going a bit gross. So old one out. New one on.

Ditched some packaging. Emptied hoover.

That’s about it for today.

Gassylady · 03/03/2021 19:30

Still just chipping away at paperwork. Sold a few more bits on eBay so some more packaging used up too. Not read in detail as reading glasses broken but thinking of those waiting for appts etc. I had a letter today asking me to confirm I still wanted my urgent gynae appt - referral was made last March!

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 03/03/2021 19:34

vinorosso I hope you are OK, the best thing is keeping busy. Your under sink cupboard sounds very similar to mine when I sorted it out!! I found allsorts under there.

So today I said I was going to do my room.... there was lots of outs, im very happy. Even though I've not done the washing up, cleaned the bathroom, or hoovered which all needed doing!
So here are the outs:
*2 bags of rubbish (emptied several handbags of receipts, random empty packaging, broken or ripped socks other rubbish!)
*3 empty contact lenses big boxes, 2 other random empty boxes and a stack of paper for the recycling.
*3 hoodies, a bag, some slippers to list on vinted.
*2 mini dehumidifiers rehomed to where they will actually be used!
*4 bags for life put away.
*a big tuff tub full of random stuff put away in the right homes. Found 8 pairs of laces so the boots and trainers I need new laces are now sorted. I was about to order some from amazon.
*3 pillows thrown away (the new ones were down the side if the bed sealed, no idea why I havent done it sooner!)
*exercise machine listed on the free site, been down the side of my bed for circa 2 years unused.
*bag full of children's hangers listed on free site.
*4 empty drinks bottles in the recycling.
*broken hot water bottle and handbag in the bin.
*bagful of bits for work by the front door ready to take tomorrow!

Knackered now 😂

footprintsintheslow · 03/03/2021 21:35

Day 175:
Photos and emails
Ten Tuppawear lids that have lost their tubs
One jar recycled

ememem84 · 03/03/2021 21:48

Baby shampoo gone and the last one bas been put in the bathroom. Making space under the bed.

SleepingStandingUp · 03/03/2021 22:30

340: a lighty up head band thing the twins like to eat, the wires have worked their way through so, binned.

Shower head replaced, toilet innards replaced. Will sort between bin and leaving out for the tat man tomorrow.

I really need to use the few weeks the kids are back to get back into it. No point touching the garage until the charity shops open but I did get....
A charity bag through my door!! 🤣😁

EllieQ · 03/03/2021 22:39

2021 day 62 update:

Nothing again today. I though I was just suffering from cramps yesterday, but it now feels as though Ive strained a muscle in my side. So no decluttering today.

RoosterRoosteringFree · 03/03/2021 23:55

Those are good pictures @SleepingStandingUp

SydneyCarton · 04/03/2021 07:18

Crossing my fingers we get our recycling taken today (plastic/glass/mixed) as there are bags all over the kitchen Angry. They only do it every fortnight and didn’t come last time so it’s a month’s worth of stuff, plus we share bins with the other flats in the block so they get full very quickly.

ememem84 · 04/03/2021 08:50

dh has thrown away his slippers. they were so stinky!

Hagqueen · 04/03/2021 10:08

Well done everyone!

Last night I discarded a couple more worn and ruined clothing items, an empty shampoo bottle and some more old bedsheets.

Not likely to do too much more today, as have plans, but still want to keep up with getting my house in order in terms of cleaning etc.

pollyannaperspective · 04/03/2021 11:32

Mostly admin list decluttering so far today. Hoping to arrange bulk collection of the bedroom refurb stuff (wood, doors and carpet) by approved rubbish collector. Council charges by the item so too expensive and too much/big for me to manage safely to the dump on my own.
I do have a dump run this afternoon for packaging and 5 old saucepans plus some other bits and pieces.

Vinorosso74 · 04/03/2021 11:51

I've also done a bit of admin this morning, mainly some emails which required a response.
Having a sit down and contemplating what to look at doing before DD wants me to help her with her art task after lunch (not a favourite subject of hers or mine!!!)
