Decluttering one item a day (and having nowhere to put it!) – thread number 16

stealthninjamum · 23/01/2021 20:33

Once again this tireless group of mumsnetters are decluttering our houses by getting rid of one item a day. Of course this year I’m just piling the stuff behind the settee because the charity shops are all closed but luckily noone’s allowed to visit me to see my clutter mountain.

This is an accountability and general chatter thread and newbies and old hands are always welcome to join in the conversation while we keep working on our houses making them clearer, organised, and clutter free.

This year some of us are trying to get rid of 2021 items and some of us are working through the Toss app that tells us what to get rid of each day. Then we report back on the thread with an update.

Previous thread here.

ememem84 I’m intrigued by the reusable pull ups! The crunchy breastfeeding side of me wanted to do washable nappies but when DD1 was born we were in a rented place with a dodgy washing machine, so I never really got off the ground with it. DD2 is in nighttime pull ups but is nearly 5 so I’m hoping she’ll become dry in the next couple of months. Might be worth getting the washable ones when DS is more or less potty trained. So far we’ve had about three wees in the potty and a distinct lack of interest in doing any more Hmm

Next stop, the highchair!

footprintsintheslow · 11/02/2021 19:18

Day 154: yesterday
H has listed some reusable nappies that were given on freecycle. Someone collecting on Saturday.

Day 155: today
Yesterday's junk modelling gone in recycling.
4 calpol syringes
Photos and emails

I really want to catch up and comment on this thread in a more interactive way but can't manage that right now. Hope everyone is ok and sane.

stealthninjamum · 11/02/2021 19:29

Welcome forgetthehousework I am trying to ignore comments on tuna drainers, I do love a good kitchen gadget, but I also really love that my kitchen drawers never get jammed or stuck and that nowadays I can usually find what I’m looking for without emptying the drawers!

Thanks for the encouragement iceisnice I do find it helps when you guys tell me to throw something away or not but a new one.

My Search for a purse to declutter proved fruitful. I found two. One a Disney Princess one and one an embroidered horror.

miaowse leave the drainer where it is! We are here to declutter.

footprints this thread is the only adult ‘conversation’ I have at the moment which is why I’m here so much, I love seeing your ‘day xxx’ posts, you must feel so satisfied knowing how well you’ve done.

2021 day 42 update:

General decluttering: Back to the Pile of Paperwork today - I pulled out all my student loan letters and filed them, and put the envelopes went in the recycling. Chose them because I knew I only had a few from the past couple of years to deal with!

SleepingStandingUp · 11/02/2021 21:16

All this talk of bulky baby stuff is like decluttering porn.

In the garage we have the travel system from DS and then a single buggy, plus the long double buggy and car seats for that, plus two bouncing chairs and a baby beanbag thing and two IKEA high chairs. All to go.

In the house to go one day, two larger high chairs, large play pen, two baby bikes, two baby chairs.

My house would be so big.

FatLadySang · 11/02/2021 21:17

Out : 2020 family planner - ha! What a waste of money that was. Hadn’t noticed it was still hanging on the wall. Haven’t bothered getting one for this year.

UnlimitedChipsAndSalsa · 11/02/2021 21:52

EllieQ, it sounds like you're doing a great job chipping away at that paperwork.
Miowse, imagine how much you've already done. Those are outs that you won't have to look at, clean, shift around, etc. ever again.
sleepingstandingup, the box looks great!
stealth, if you can let your single socks go, go for it! I'm weird about socks, so my new plan seemed to be the only way to shift my collection of singles (nearly a carrier bag's worth). I'm actually hoping I get fed up with the odd pairs and send them all to the rag bag. We'll see.
footprints, it's amazing that you're getting anything done with a lovely squishy baby stealing all of your sleep.

My out today was a pair of hiking boots into the charity shop bag. They don't fit well.

ememem84 · 11/02/2021 22:30

Finished a Clinique night cream yay. So that’s something else out of my stash gone.

lazyakita · 11/02/2021 23:15

Not much movement for me today. Got rid of an old birthday card and some flooring samples. I'll count it as two items, so up to 183. Nothing new in but I have been shopping online so that will change soon!

SleepingStandingUp · 11/02/2021 23:20

249: DH has binned a broken whiskey glass with the kids names on 😕

I've stuck wooden letters to the boxes but shall not show off as the kids names are v outing. I was very impressed with the packet though, I got all the names out of one packet but needed the 2nd for me and now I have lots of spare letters with no E's or N's 😂😂

stealthninjamum · 12/02/2021 08:16

Toss has suggested I do my ‘nightstand’ today which I had to look up the meaning of.

Anyway I have two chest of drawers next to my bed and I have a dressing table and I am going to attempt to declutter / tidy them. That’s 13 drawers in total. It sounds like a lot but I have already done so much decluttering in my bedroom that I think it’s probably only half an hours work.

We had reusable pull ups Sydney. They were great but you need a child who is fairly reliable for the ones that we used - they were good for motorway journeys or other times when you couldn't take them to the potty quickly.

Love all the memory box ideas, I need to go through the stuff I have kept. Think it is all in shoeboxes at the moment so tidy but not pretty!

Big box of dvds has gone so that feels like a decent out. Am hopeful it will lead to more as DH spent some time happily scanning stuff yesterday evening but then decided that his 'rare' books were worth more than the 40p on offer. They are not rare, just old from his uni days!

Am pondering an offer from a friend to buy our old baby bouncer. Like lots of you we have loads of bulky baby stuff in storage but am feeling very conflicted about getting rid. Silly as in the unlikely ever I have more babies I could just replace it or even get it back.

My first out for today is a colour your own t-shirt set that DD started but outgrew before she finished.

ememem84 · 12/02/2021 12:26

The pair of socks I’m wearing will be binned when I get home. There is a giant hole in one of them.

ememem84 · 12/02/2021 12:27

We use reuseable pull ups for ds at night time.

SingToTheSky · 12/02/2021 12:30

em where did you get them please? We tried some for Cagletini but they didn’t work for her at all. Not sure if they were too big though.

ememem84 · 12/02/2021 12:31

sing I bought these ones for C

ememem84 · 12/02/2021 12:32

They’ve been pretty good. He did have an accident last night but it’s rare.

SingToTheSky · 12/02/2021 12:40

Aah cool thanks. We got jojo ones. She is dry most nights so she went without anything for a while but TBH we are just too shattered to deal with the odd accident (especially as she gets so upset when cold and wet so a lot of screaming 🙄) we’ve just got pull ups. So expensive though 😬

AlexTheLittleCat · 12/02/2021 14:10

Glad the reusable pull ups work well. I had reusable nappies and they always leaked, think the brand wasn't the best. I have considered them for potty training when it comes, toddler has giant wees as they are a little milk monster and I'm not sure they will last the night.

I found some tofu in the cupboard (the long life carton type, not the refrigerated type) due up at end of November, will be ok? I don't like to waste food!

I'm inspired by thread as always and must do some more decluttering over the next few days.

In: cordless vacuum cleaner, to declutter all the small messes that children create.

oohmama · 12/02/2021 14:35

Our kitchen drawer got really badly jammed last night. Infuriating
So I've re organised it
And managed to get rid of some calpol syringes that don't actually work

Also dd's toy cot which is broken! I will have to replace it though 😭

forgetthehousework · 12/02/2021 15:07

I am a follower of the Discworld goddess Anoia (goddess of things that get stuck in drawers) and regularly use the ritual chant of "How can it close on the damned thing but not open with it? Who bought this? Do we ever use it?" which is associated with her followers.

I have thrown out four books today.

stealthninjamum · 12/02/2021 15:38

forgetthehousework that’s hilarious. I haven’t read a discworld book for years but used to love Terry Pratchett. Anoia would hate me because my drawers all glide closed these days with no obstructions.

I have done nothing today. Well I watched a geography video on China, attempted some Spanish and I made meal after meal after meal. I have a brief space of an hour before I make the next meal with which to tidy my bedroom drawers and hopefully declutter something.

Are these designed for the odd accidental wee or a full on night of seeing? Currently have 3 kids who breach their night nappies.
