Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

Yes DH is somewhat addicted too 😂 I’m more of a fairweather player, I only started after lockdown, I was never into Pokémon before (unlike DS, who lives and breathes it - Xmas presents include an album for his trading cards, the latest encyclopaedia and I need to order a pikachu sticker for his light switch 🤔😂) but it gives me a bit of a “reward” for walking which is good as I am not really a “go out for a walk” person.

I am crashing a bit tonight which is purely due to yesterday’s swim, there are things I still want to do from my habit list as it would be a shame not to do them all on my first day 😳 and I haven’t actually had a moment spare to make the trackers etc. But I need to rest too so I might just curl up until Cagletini is asleep. But we still need to meal plan.

The evening routine worked fairly well, DD1 was annoyed it was starting as there was some big drama on her phone 🙄 but actually she did get on with her stuff including happily discussing homework etc so it was nice to have a phone break. DS declared raw spinach is ok. So that’s a win. :o

Right, painkillers and water and meal plan 😑

Lisette1940 · 05/11/2020 20:18

vio112 apologies - I'm sorry to read about your MC too x. Foxes podcast is here www.rickhanson.net/being-well-podcast-paul-gilbert-on-confidence/ - a lot of the podcast deals with depression too

Lisette1940 · 05/11/2020 20:19

here

Bowerbird5 · 05/11/2020 22:10

Ta didn’t
🌻 most of my plan. I had a really bad headache and went to sleep for over an hour on the sofa after lunch.
Have done a basket of RC. Kept most of it and found some lovely Christmas ideas/patterns. Filed and tidy and I will do the rest to tomorrow.
I was going to make cake but I have 7”,9”,10” round and two square and none are the right size if only I had checked yesterday I could have bought one. I have a large tin that changes size. I can’t find it. I will have a look tomorrow otherwise I will have to go and buy another.

Lisette1940 · 06/11/2020 00:43

I'm planning the cake too. Need 20cm tin. Must check greaseproof paper supplies too.

SingToTheSky · 06/11/2020 00:46

ta da continued
⬇️35ish min walk in the park by myself, was nice but I need to leave a bit earlier really
🔒a few mins of tidying in bathroom, kitchen and boodwa
⬇️dragged everyone through screen free routine after dinner which included cleaning table, future friend for nursery clothes etc
🔒bit of reading
⬇️continued putting clothes away
🔒evening self care routine
⬇️partially filled WM for tomorrow
🔒bought some kids Italian books on eBay as DS appeared to be completely serious about learning it (whyyyy couldn’t it be french? I KNOW french)
⬇️sorted vitamins for the next fortnight (forgot to list that earlier)

tomorrow
🎯DH is off early for covid test (due to hospital appt next week, no symptoms etc) so I need to take Cagletini to nursery
🎯home ed is already planned out although I need to print something
🎯DS has scouts
🎯I need to write out the house rules and routine and I want to do my tracker things dammit. It will be nice to actually do them.
🎯want to start my futurelearn course ideally

🍒👋

wooly great news with the tribe and school work.hope you feel better today.i was only saying to dd2 yesterday we've not had a cold this winter yet

foxessocks · 06/11/2020 06:52

glittery hope the cold isn't too bad and you feel better today. Hooray for a good day all round for the dc that's fab!

sing well done for getting everyone doing the routine!

Lisette thank you for the link for the podcast I will listen to that next week when the dc are at school Smile

Bower hope your headache is better

Sorry about everyone I've missed, I'm in bed on my phone and i can't scroll back without losing my post! I remember what I read but not exactly who said what 🤦‍♀️

Today is my day off (thank goodness!!) and ds is at home with me today so I usually try and spend time playing with him in the morning, then we pick dd up just after lunch (she does a half day at school on Fridays at the moment).

So around that hopefully some flying!

I'll try and post something for the KCC later now we've finished our fantastic fishy discussion 😀

OP posts:
foxessocks · 06/11/2020 06:54

Xpost zoo good morning! I also need to get out of bed! It's so hard when it cold and dark!

OP posts:
SingToTheSky · 06/11/2020 07:42

I hate cold dark mornings. Thankfully it’s light now but I’ve just messaged DH to put the heating on. We really need to work out the timer on the control panel thingy 😳😂

I don’t think Cagletini is up yet but she was a bit sniffly last night and kept waking up a little, no cough etc but might keep her home anyway, will decide in a bit.

po3.1
❗️Try and catch a few more minutes dozing 😳
❗️When up, drink some water and decide if nursery is happening
❗️Weigh self

MrsTidyHouse · 06/11/2020 07:47

Well and truly fallen off the thread. I was busy with the detritus of DS's old room until the weekend, then just stopped. LOs' homework is online now, but so piecemeal with several usernames and passwords for each child, which monopolises my iPad for a couple of hours each evening.

Apart from that, the routines are making a big difference. LOs argue less with me re tv, get ready for school quickly, and we are all eating more healthily during the week. The children are definitely better all round.

Having bought extra uniform in order to have fresh clothes every morning, then replaced outgrown items, I find I now have to buy school hoodies at an eye-watering price. Only two allowed per child, which will make daily clean clothes difficult.

Sorry to be down. I'm tired of conducting almost my entire life at a distance at the moment.

HillsBesideTheSea · 06/11/2020 08:54

Goood morning beautiful people totally stole that from someone but shhhhh

I have caught up on a bit of sleep, period almost over which also helps as that makes me lathargic too. (tmi i know, but know you will also understand). Everything still hurts but mentally i have some get up and go. Pain killers of a gentle level will help the physical get up and go.

House looks like something you would find on a hoarders episode because it is in that really really awkward mid sort out phase of tidying up. So i want to evict the charity stuff into mum's car, the tip stuff into dad's and the to burn stuff out to the garden for getting burnt in a bonfire night appropriate manner. By the time i have folded, sorted, ironed and put away the laundry the lounge should be mostly recovered.

Hopefully that is all achieveable to day. I also need to clean out the fish tank as that is getting urgent now. So that is the plan for between now and tea time. If i finish sooner i will start on the computer projects sooner (you know the sit down and takes time to achieve little ones)

Wishing you all good days! off to ring school. Ds is sick again. So time to try to sort an illusive appointment.

Thanks Foxes it seems ok so far. It came back last night.
Would it be worth mentioning to your work that they have overloaded you? Maybe someone else could take half as it seems unfair for you to be expected to do yours and hers.
Good to hear from you MrsTidy glad things are improving.
Hills I know just what you mean. That was our upstairs last week. Need to give DH a kick up the bum to get the furniture moved around like he said he was going too.

My hall looks lovely and tidy. Having to sort it for the arrival of the bed was good.Just need the builder to come and plaster it. The hall.😂 He is allowed apparently. Hoping he might turn up today. Then we could get it painted by Christmas.

Need to dry LOL as it just hung on line.
Hoping to do Window and one BRC in dining room. Two would be better. Need to find cake tin or go buy another. Might go to Dobbies as they had loads of new ones and there is now a small Sainsbury within apparently. They had a food shop in there before which I quite like as things like balsamic vinegar sold. I might also buy pansies and bulbs. Need to get others planted.
Right need to get to it.

SingToTheSky · 06/11/2020 10:02

Got Cagletini to nursery. Foot now hurts again. 🙄 I didn’t even drink any water before but my fast timer is green now so time for food and painkillers. CBA to get on with anything else yet 😖 so I am curling up on the sofa until DH is home from his covid test

SingToTheSky · 06/11/2020 10:02

Oh. He’s home 😂 but I’m still not moving yet

foxessocks · 06/11/2020 11:51

sing glad you got little one to nursery and hope your foot feels better soon Sad

Mrstidy that's great that the routines have helped but sorry you are feeling down Sad it's really tough at the moment.

Hills hope ds feels better soon. Not Tmi at all, we definitely do understand.

Glad you are feeling better glittery and thank you, this morning has been really nice just relaxing with ds Smile

Bower You're right I probably should say something, I'm also a bit annoyed as when they increased my hours they said they'd get one of the managers to take her share of the work back which she should be doing anyway but doesn't Hmm but they haven't spoken to her yet. So that would help. I think I will remind them of that. I'm not very good at saying when I'm struggling! I'm sure lots of us relate to that Grin

Right I need to clean ds up as he's covered in chocolate spread 😂

Back in a minute with some ta das and to dos!

OP posts:
HillsBesideTheSea · 06/11/2020 12:01

Not me foxes I'm a gobby shite that refused promotion 3 times as I don't want to manage people. Grin

foxessocks · 06/11/2020 12:08

Ta das
School run
Popped to shop on the way home for few bits
Sorted out my email out of office
Played board games with ds
Tidied kitchen
Dishwasher on
Hung washing up
Put more washing on
Took rubbish out
Tidied living room
Baked cakes with ds
Gave ds an early lunch as we have to collect dd soon
Helped ds decorate his cakes
Ordered eggs to come with my milk delivery tomorrow
Sent a birthday message

To do
Hang next load of washing up
Pay some bills
Make soup
Declutter some of ds clothes as loads are too small. For a kid who at the moment lives on porridge, cheese and chocolate he does seem to be growing well 🤦‍♀️ I shall blame 6'3 dh for that! Dd is pretty small so ds will catch her up soon I think and he hasn't even started school yet!!

I also really need to try and do some cleaning and tidying in this week's zone as I haven't managed much this week (not leading by example!)

School run time so better dash!

OP posts:
foxessocks · 06/11/2020 12:11

hills before the dc I was a manager and I was actually pretty good at confrontation in those days! Not so good at delegating though that's the problem! These days I just want to get the job done with no hassle from others Grin
I don't blame you for not wanting to manage others tbh

OP posts:
HillsBesideTheSea · 06/11/2020 13:42

ta da
clothes folded and dumped in relevant person's basket
Ironing basket mostly emptied - ready to be re-filled
Sock pile of doom folding and basket emptied until i found more socks waiting to be dealt with
2nd load of washing in machine
1st of 2 rice puddings in the oven. Yay allergies
food shopping out of my car

Just eaten lunch i need to go tackle more stuff. My get up and go is flagging.

SingToTheSky · 06/11/2020 14:23

ta da so far
👽got up, weighed in and got dressed
👽walked to nursery and back
👽got DS through a bit of work, no motivation today
👽pasta for lunch
👽5min tidy in downstairs bathroom while it was cooking (I like the short time target as it’s easier to fit in rather than not bothering at all)
👽aired house
👽made habit tracker and water tracker in my bujo type book for lockdown
👽phoned istore about charger (yay I adulted!!!)

Think I’ve buggered up my leg by not walking on my foot properly so I’m quite glad lockdown gives me no reason to go out 😳 DH is going to town to collect DD1’s meds and swap my faulty charger and we are trying to avoid top up shops so we should be able to stay home as far as possible. I might request some library books - as much for their stats as for us really, but I could get some Italian stuff for DS and some different books for Cagletini as well.

SingToTheSky · 06/11/2020 14:31

po3.2
❗️Get DS through last bits of work for the week
❗️Order screen cover for iPad as it has mysteriously cracked 😖😖😖 it’s nearly 3 years old so it’s had a good run but 😭😭😭
❗️Choose some short drama or anime series to try and watch in lockdown
