A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

4 hours at the pub! 😳 Had breakfast at 10, followed by a Pepsi later on, and people had come for lunch and left again by the time we left 😳 was so nice to chat.

I’ve sent DH to bed (he was up a lot with Cagletini overnight), might do some more planning for next week. Two more weeks before half term and it feels doable to get both schedules done as I've already written in a fair bit.

apumpkinaday · 10/10/2020 14:47

Sorry you aren’t sleeping zoo and sorry to hear about your DC panicking, it must be so difficult for you all💐

I haven’t done much today, I think we might drive somewhere for a walk. Maybe go for tea out, I feel like there’s so much I can’t do. The swimming centres here are only open for lane swimming and not leisure which is crap because the kids love swimming this time of year. I might cure my boredom by buying the kids some clothes.

EerilyDeleted · 10/10/2020 19:58

Evening all, sorry for not posting links earlier, I forgot, it's been a while since I've led the thread.

I am pleased with myself as I finished off the kitchen missions this morning by cleaning the counters and large appliances (I did the bin and floor yesterday and, erm can't remember what the other one was now, but the kitchen is much improved). I do find the kitchen missions the easiest ones in general.

Apumpkin - it does seem unfair that there's no leisure swimming for children, I do feel yunger ones are missing out on exercise as older ones are more likely to be in clubs or teams that are still running. However I have to say, as a parent of a competitive swimmer, the current restrictions on pool use, ie not being allowed to change and having to come and go with costume under clothes might put off all but the most dedicated anyway.

Zoo - I'm sorry about the lack of sleep, it does sound awful. I find lavender pillow spray relaxing but not sure if that would help with the severity you are suffering with Flowers.

Sing - yay for extended pub visit! All the current restrictions make these occasions all the more precious.

I'm feeling a bit down today. We are having the exterior of the house painted next week (weather permitting) and we have spent hours and hours going round in circles over colour choices - it's a rendered terraced house so we need to coordinate with the neighbours to some extent. The rendering was patched last year so it badly needs doing. DH and I feel it's time for a change, but I also feel sad that our house which has been the same colour for 20 years is going to change. DD doesn't want it to change and is sad too. DS likes the new colour. I think I'll regret it if we have the old colour again, but I'm scared I won't like the new colour too. Even though I picked it in the first place. We have been back and forth all week to the trade paint counter for samples and I have been walking round town taking surreptitious photos of other painted houses. Gulp.

How about another KCC.

What is your preferred Saturday night TV viewing? Present or past.

I'm partial to Strictly now. Also happy with some of the talent shows,
or quiz shows, not keen on the X Factor though.

I grew up with the Generation Game and thought it was amazing, the tasks, Bruce Forsyth's nudge-nudge asides to the contestants, the conveyor belt. Silver candelabra, continental quilt, crystal decanter, give us a twirl Anthea, those were the days.

OP posts:
SingToTheSky · 10/10/2020 20:28

Aw ed I'm sorry you feel sad :( hopefully the new colour works well!

Hmm, TV - TBH we barely watch family TV anymore, this is the disadvantage of now having Netflix and Prime. Strictly is something we watch religiously some years and then never get into on other years. DD1 has been ballroom dancing (not in a competition type way) for fiveish years and she enjoys watching it but also enjoys a grumble when they aren’t doing it properly!

We enjoyed the BGT auditions this year but forgot to watch the recent shows (except the Diversity BLM dance on YouTube) and annoyingly there’s no way of watching ITV hub on the telly as unlike BBC and C4 they don’t seem to have a PlayStation app. The other thing we love when it’s on is Michael Macintyre’s big show!

I loved the generation game as a kid, my dad likes snooker too so we often watched Big Break. Pot as many balls as ya can!!! 🔴🟡🟢🟤🔵🟣⚫️

SingToTheSky · 10/10/2020 20:32

And yes I had to Google the colour order as I couldn’t remember some! Purple is of course a substitute for pink :o

Anyone remember Pets Win Prizes? I loved that when I was young :o

EerilyDeleted · 10/10/2020 20:37

We don't watch much live TV now either (we have Sky but not Netflix). Saturday night is the most likely time for us to sit down and watch together though. Yes to Michael McIntyre's Big Show, that's another good one.

What in flying fuck is that madness that is active conversations?!

Can't a girl throw a strop, flounce and expect sanity to reign in her absence?

bit dusty in here...

EerilyDeleted · 10/10/2020 20:42

Well, hello!

EerilyDeleted · 10/10/2020 20:45

How are you Hills, it's been a while.

OP posts:
SingToTheSky · 10/10/2020 20:47

OMG HILLS!!! How the devil are you?

I realise I have name changed possibly three times since you were last here, but hello! :)

HillsBesideTheSea · 10/10/2020 20:54

It has been a while. Probably a lot longer than I think it has been. And longer than I intended because i accidentally got myself locked out by forgetting my password and which email account this is linked to.

Hmmm in summary? Still renovating that house. So much drama. we are going to pretend it is not happen and ignore that right now. Still decluttering. We shall pretend that long timers don't know how long that has been going on and ignore it. I am ignoring all conversations about GCSEs as this is a sensitive topic around here. very sensitive. Ds is hoping for exams it is the only thing that is going to save his butt right now.

Can i go with alive and employed? Grin

No witchy icons from mn this year? darnit miss those suckers.

HillsBesideTheSea · 10/10/2020 20:57

I have been living else where these lack of ability to clicky buttons on individual posts is annoying. No likes, no funny, no educational no buttons. It's weird and I keep looking for them.

HillsBesideTheSea · 10/10/2020 21:00

Evening SingtotheSKy Are you having a lovely weekend?

Forgive me whilst i try to get to grips with the thread.

foxessocks · 10/10/2020 21:28

sing omg pets win prizes I LOVED that!!

I also loved the generation game 😀

Saturday night viewing, not much really, dd stayed up and watched episode 2 of great British bake off with me tonight . Dd also loves strictly but I'm not so keen on it anymore, although I do like how excited dd gets about it!

Welcome back hills Smile

foxessocks · 10/10/2020 21:30

ED sorry about house painting issues, hope you like it once it's done, I'm sure you will! Well done for doing all the kitchen missions, I missed a few, but better than recent weeks so I'm fairly pleased!

Screamingcobweb · 10/10/2020 21:58

Hills me old mucker! Fantabulous to "see" you! Grin. Alive and employed is good in these troubled times! Sorry to hear renovations still ongoing though. Can very much sympathise Flowers Flowers Flowers

apumpkinaday · 10/10/2020 22:03

Not much flying today, we went for a walk in the wyre Forrest. There was a cafe there so we had cake and milkshake, then beans on toast for tea because I cba.

ED it is a bit rubbish for them isn’t it, I do feel like other than walks I can’t do much with the kids. Not good to hear they aren’t being run well. I’m sorry to hear you’re feeling a bit down💐

KCC I do love a bit of strictly, and when Saturday night takeaways on I love that too.

Welcome back hills!

SingToTheSky · 10/10/2020 22:05

Hey sc love the Halloween name.

Cheers hills I am my usual overwhelmed self 😳😂 some things never change!

Sounds like things have been hectic there but just settle in here, we are glad to have you back! :)

HillsBesideTheSea · 10/10/2020 22:12

Sing you say that now, wait til you see my list for tomo. I have it written and it is going to have to come with a warning... GrinBlush

Evening foxes and apumpkinaday

SC we're gonna regret that in the morning Wink

Screamingcobweb · 10/10/2020 22:26

Hey Sing Smile

Sorry not up to date with thread. A bit stressful here atm. Dd's school ridden with Covid-19. So many are quarantining there are only 15 in her form class out of 22. Many teachers off too which results in students being put together in study hall fhs... . Could have anticipated this situation and more on-line provision should have been made but school old-fashioned and inflexible and I know staff are under huge pressure. Hey ho.

Anyway, sorry but didn't see about you feeling down ED. Those big decisions about house renovations always v stressful and there's always a bit that feels worse just before it sll gets better. I'm sure new colour will look fab Flowers

Zoo I hope you sleep tonight [wafts lavender scented breezes in your direction]
