Fledglings Flying Frightfully into October

A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

Lots to catch up on! Hazel, ED, and Bower thank you for bark-bulb suggestions. I think I will leave the wee circles where bulbs are planted uncovered and bark the rest. Everything should be delivered by Saturday, hopefully the weather holds so I can finish it.

Kats I am so with you on the nesting clean. Pregnancy hormones are quite a treat.

Wellies Massive congratulations on DS passing the driving test! He must be chuffed.

Sing I hope you are feeling better. No relationship is a straight line, even the strongest ones have peaks and troughs. I hope you manage to find some quality time with your other half to reconnect to each other.

Zoo sounds like you are on a roll! I hope your insomnia is not too torturous.

ED with crocheting, I am going to easy clothes patterns. My problem with bigger items is that I sometimes lose concentration and miscount the stitches... 🥴

Ta Da:
🎉LOL X2
🎉Morning routine
🎉Cut the grass in the back garden and on the side lawn. Front garden is for tomorrow.
🎉Made apple pie
🎉Evening routine

👻👋 To everyone!

How are you finding mat leave mc? I really loved it with DD but with DS I was quite impatient, I just wanted him out!

DD has joined us in bed, she doesn’t feel well apparently but I know it’s because she heard DS in with me and didn’t want to miss out on the fun!. Charlie and Lola is on the tv and hopefully they’ll drift off to sleep watching it. To pass the time I’m booking a few Christmassy things up

Mc3209 · 08/10/2020 01:03

pumpkin I am loving mat leave so far! Getting to do all the things I didn't have time/headspace whilst working. Now I can actually read non work related books, play piano, sort out the house, and do a bit of crocheting/embroidery!

I hope your little ones have drifted off to sleep by now.
What kind of activities are you booking?

apumpkinaday · 08/10/2020 03:06

It sounds like you’re having a great time mc! I’m very excited to have a baby on the thread!!

Kids are asleep, I’m not🙄. I’m not too sure at the minute our fav activities have been cancelled but there’s a Christmas party at the sea life centre and Thomas land Christmas celebrations which I might book up

Stilllivinginazoo · 08/10/2020 03:53

pumpkin hope a naps in the cards for you later.
Kat deffo Dettol kids handprint decorations.id be in bits if had to throw those!

HauntingHazel · 08/10/2020 05:58

Welcome to the newbies!

Sorry I'm not going to add very much to the thread today, I'm tired. But I did want to stop in and say that I've done my ironing! 😇

foxessocks · 08/10/2020 07:07

Well done on the ironing hazel!

Wellies big well done to your ds!!

Welcome to the new people, so sorry I can't scroll back well on my phone and I've now forgotten names 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I need to go and sort breakfast now, I've been up since 6.20 but yet again haven't actually used the time productivity when will I learn 🙄

Morning all,

Overslept today, yesterday clearly caught up with me. So a quick post with some links.

Our babystep today is our control journal whether paper or electronic. I've never been very good at this to be honest, I just follow the posts.

Thursday is errand day and our mission is to clean the surfaces of our large appliances.

Flight plan is here

KCC - inspired by mentions of virtual chocolate - what's your favourite chocolate? Do you even like it? One of my DCs isn't keen (unsurprising if you are familiar with my DCs eating habits). I am very partial to Galaxy, not bothered about the posh stuff.

OP posts:
SingToTheSky · 08/10/2020 09:56

Not caught up yet. Friend/aunt just phoned to say she’s leaving now so I have maybe 45-60min. Not even out of bed yet, too achy! Luckily DH came home via the small supermarket.

foxessocks · 08/10/2020 15:25

zoo your ta da list is so long anyway, I would rest as much as possible if I were you!

Welcome back that!

Today has not gone to plan. I had an orthodontist appointment so had planned to come back home and work until school run time to make up the time. I got home, had quick lunch, just started back to work and then get a phone call from nursery to say ds poorly please can I collect him, so gave up on work, luckily dh got home so I could pick dd up without dragging ds with me.

I think ds symptoms are just from the flu spray he had, he has a slight temperature (although it isn't an official temperature as per NHS but he feels warm), and he's very snotty and tired. His key worker says they might start asking parents to get flu sprays done on Fridays so symptoms don't effect nursery or it will cause problems but I did point out we didn't get a choice of day just told when it was. I suppose I should have kept him off today just in case but he was fine this morning. Everything is so complicated at the moment and I never know if I've done the wrong thing Sad

Anyway, key worker says if he is better tomorrow then he is ok to come back on Monday (he doesn't go Fridays anyway) and we only need to think about getting him tested if it goes on longer than 24 hours.

So now I feel as though everything is up in the air until I see how he is tomorrow Confused

THATbasicWITCH · 08/10/2020 18:12

Thanks for the welcome backs!

foxes when did he have the spray? Dc4 has had his and i was wondering about this

foxessocks · 08/10/2020 18:42

that he had it Tuesday and the nurse said he may get some mild symptoms in a few days (at least I'm sure that's what she said it's hard to hear with everyone in all the PPE!) . I also remember last year my ds did get poorly after his flu spray, only lasted a day though if I remember rightly, so he obviously does react to it. My dd doesn't seem to have the issue if I remember rightly so I guess it depends on the child! It's just so hard this year because I have no idea what I'm supposed to do.

He is already asleep, he didn't have any dinner and is obviously feeling miserable ☹️ we've given him Calpol which took about 3 hours of negotiation, he absolutely hates medicine.

Needless to say not a lot of flying today in the end! I've got washing on ready to finish in the morning, the dishwasher is on, made fish pie for dinner (which dd cried about despite previously loving 🙄) . Everyone is a bit emotional (I include myself in that!)

Mc3209 · 08/10/2020 18:45

Hi That 👋 good to see you back!
Zoo I think you need to put your feet up with a cuppa. Don't burn out, hun. You are doing a lot.

I've done no housework today. At all. Well, I've made the bed. That's it. So into a haughty corner I go.

Flower bulbs got delivered and one bag of bark (out of two). Tomorrow is poking in the garden day! Rain, rain, go away.

Mc3209 · 08/10/2020 18:46

foxes I hope DS feels better soon.

foxessocks · 08/10/2020 19:06

Thanks.

Sorry, I repeated myself a lot I think! I'm very tired!

Had a look in the flu spray leaflet the nurse gave me and ds basically has all the symptoms that are "common" so I'm nearly 100% sure that's what it is.
