First of all, a big thank you to SingToTheSky for leading us through the August thread, (you can park your mop and hang up your duster now)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here . Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

hazel yes i just get them from you tube I just search for ones for whatever time I have to spare, I think next time I need to search for easy HIIT because some of them are ridiculously hard going (although I appreciate that's the point!) The Joe Wicks one was alright (have I got his name right 🤔)

Wellies I hope so 🤞 I think even though I have to pick up ds at a set time, it should hopefully be the case that if I'm a few minutes late it won't matter as we have to queue outside and the kids come out one at a time which takes a while... obviously I don't want to keep the staff waiting but if I'm just sneaking in at the back of the queue each day I'm hoping that's ok...!

Ta das
Washing hung out (and got briefly rained on but I'm pretending it didn't happen 😆)
Dishwasher emptied and reloaded
School run
Took ds to the park and met some friends
Went to supermarket
Returned parcel
Picked up parcel
Took ds to the cafe
Dropped off some of dd old uniform to a friend
Made ds lunch

I'm currently eating breadsticks and cream cheese for my lunch because I just wanted to sit down!

Need to collect dd soon, the days just go so quick!

On the train home. It’s been such a lovely day. All nice except an anxiety attack for DD1 as we got on the train up - I think a combination of being such a new situation (the Caglets are well used to public transport since we don’t drive, but obviously not so much lately) and possibly to do with what went on with her boyfriend at school - needs further investigation it seems 😣

But otherwise, a fab day - Chinatown, Lego store etc. It really did feel normal except for masks, and the buses and trains are much nicer because we aren’t rammed in like sardines! We didn’t use the underground this time, just a bus to Piccadilly Circus and lots of walking.

I got a new railcard this morning too (free on tesco clubcard) so I’m going to talk to some home ed friends about doing some trips. It’s the masks-in-museums that is the possible sticking point though as that’s an awfully long time to not be able to take it off (although I must say I’ve never seen anyone challenged anywhere over it).

I’m also super tempted to take a trip up on my own at some point.

sing that sounds great, glad you had a good day Smile sorry about your dd anxiety though, did I miss something about her boyfriend?? Hope she's okay Sad

I am at the end of my tether! I have a case of two very over excited children (it's ds birthday tomorrow) , parent guilt because I told dd we'd go to the park after school and the time just got away and I couldn't fit it in (she's cross with me, she doesn't usually get cross really so I think she's also tired!) and an epic to do list to be completed by 12pm tomorrow which is when our small number of guests arrive, this includes constructing a gazebo which apparently needs 3 people to build 🤔🤔

I feel like I have to make sure I say "small number of guests" so none of you think I'm irresponsibly holding some sort of 4 year old rave for ds birthday 😂

My step count each day with the new school run where I have to go the long way round is 17000 Shock it used to be about 12000 and I'm definitely feeling that extra!!

What time would it be acceptable to start drinking the prosecco I bought for the celebrations tomorrow?!

The boyfriend thing foxes was (sorry can’t remember what I posted before now 🤦‍♀️😂) what she finally told us the other day that I spoke to head of year about as she’s getting anxious about going back to school. Basically it turned out he was pressuring her to do things both IRL and over WhatsApp etc. Little shit. Just so relieved she stood her ground and recognises it as awful behaviour.

That’s it, first week of work done!. I am so happy to have the weekend off, settling back into work has been a nightmare and the DC have struggled being away from me so we’re having a weekend together. Their dad is meant to be coming over on Saturday but apparently is having car troubles (funny that somethings always got in the way in the day he’s meant to see the DC) so we’ll see what happens.

mc I love the John Lewis ads. They make everything feel so much more cosier. I found I wasn’t prepared at all last year so I’m starting now!

wellies I’m the other way around, I need to get it out the way!. I haven’t got a planner though I might need one of them!.

sing I’m glad london went well. Sorry to hear about the boyfriend, he sounds like a dick.

I’ve got to tidy the play room, attached a pic of it. I’m not sure whether to just leave it because it’ll look the same tomorrow!.

Well, I've managed to stumble along to the end of our fourth week of school - and the first that we've managed to attend every day. I got home from Monday's drop-off, wondering how on earth I'd get through it all, and here we are five days later, with our colds clearing up, and a mountain of uniform to wash. Only one lost jersey, probably for ever Sad

This weekend will be a massive clean and tidy of just about everything, while I have the place to myself. No Flying as such. Just do enough to get them back to school in one piece on Monday.

Atm, tackling sitting-room shelves, eating chocolate, drinking tea, listening to podcasts.

S2 was back at school today. Has his timetable and is pleased to note that he has three free study periods during the staggered lunch so will be able to sit at the till for the whole session.

H is watching The Boys and I have - totally against my will - been drawn in to feeling sympathy for various characters. Also, they keep playing Billy Joel. Good lord, Simon Pegg is playing somebody's dad.

Well finally caught up.

Wellies you did a great job of that jacket. I wouldn’t be tackling that. I did manage to take out the elastic and the ties and put new in. I thought it was a simple job of retreading elastic... oh no it wasn’t anyway done and I am pleased that I have mended two skirts. I have a third but it can wait.
Welcome Devlesko I wrote in a journal all the detailed cleaning that was relevant to me to follow. So I left out the front porch because we don’t have one etc. It gets easier and sometimes I abandon it in favour of a day somewhere else like the garden.
Sing glad you had a good day. It is a long time since I went to London about 20 years. I would love to go to the theatre though.DH doesn’t really like that. I was hoping my star pupil would get a part in something and send me free tickets. He promised he would if he got on one of the big musicals.
Lisette glad you found it so. I could do with tidying the pots up and taking them to Dobbies. We have far to many.
Anorangeaday welcome
SC not having visitors for a while will be a blessing for you. Will DD go to Uni there or come here? Or maybe chose another path? My DDs gap year is getting longer and longer!
Foxes I’m glad it isn’t just me who forgets to get food out of the freezer. I forgot the fish today. I thought about it about three times then forgot until 1:45🙄pm it was salmon.

Well the Orange and Polenta Cake was a hit

Forgot to say ( until I just moved) that I think I have dislocated my shoulder today. DH was trying to ignore me and got his exasperated voice so I didn’t say anymore after initially complaining. I think I might have to go to hospital. It has got worse. Bugger! I did it by pulling out a RBasketC I think. I have done it before but not for a long time.

I had a longish chat with Union rep today. We are moving forward. I have had a strange week this week.

I haven’t got many Ta Das.

Cleaned basin and loo.
Vacuumed through.
Wiped sitting room windows again as muck from tractors zooming up and down.
Unsuccessfully sorted a pile. I don’t know where to put it but still want it.
Washed up.
Washed kitchen floor.
Wafted feather duster at cobwebs.
Made bed.
Made fritters, salmon and peas DH made salad.
Sent emails.

Forgot about handbag. It could do with It.

Where’s zoo?

Bower really hope your shoulder is not dislocated 😳 If it's any consolation the polenta cake looks yummy.

MC glad you are in weekend mode.

Today I'm doing a quick tidy and then DH and I will assess the garden to see what we need to do. Landscaper is coming out for a quote. Need plants for pots. Couldn't paint furniture because paint had gone off.

Need to integrate some exercise into the day. Our family walks have disappeared!

Am pondering a strong coffee. Opens weekend naughty corner - big fry up with lots of veggie options. Large teapot full of whatever tea you like. Crusty bread.

Phew, so pleased it’s the weekend! Got here with the house just about in order, but downstairs needs a clean this morning. Hoping DH will help me put the new hall unit together before he has to do some overtime this afternoon. He didn’t seem overly keen when I dropped a hint. I’m actually far better at flat pack than he is but it says requires 2 people and I’m a weakling.

I love the kids playing stories. It’s so funny listening to them. I am rubbish at imaginative play and do not enjoy it, but as DD is an only and I’m out at work half the week I feel I have to at least some of the time when she’s asks. Luckily she is quite good at playing herself a lot of the time. I much prefer it when she wants us to read, do a puzzle or go for a walk though.

Bower hope the shoulder is ok!

Foxes happy birthday to DS. Hope the party goes well.

Glad the trip went well Sing and DD sounds like a strong girl. Glad she’s spoken to you about what happened.

Upholder I could manage that role. The stories were lovely. Last year I had to work in Nursery and just checking on the ones in the role play corner discovered it was all about the three bears. Guess who had a mop cap and was covered in blankets when a staff member from school came looking for me? The children were loving having it though.

Sing Glad DD confided in you. How horrible for her.

Lisette how exciting having a landscape gardener coming. Thanks the recipe was first one on BBC website. I am going to try Jamie Oliver’s recipe for it too.

Merry pecan and date sounds delicious.

Where is Zoo ?🤔 Hope she is ok.

Morning all. Woke up from an anxiety dream about library fines :o so have messaged my old colleague to double check current rules as the website confused me. I did loads more planning last night as I couldn’t sleep, need to do a huge amount of printing in the next week to set us up for a bit, and still need to design some work for particular things. And sort out the shelf where we will keep everything. Slightly worried we will run out of paper 😂 actually need to order tesco anyway so will add some to that. I’m enjoying it now I’ve got in the swing of it, and am excited by knowing how much easier it will make day to day life. 😳 Expecting a delivery today with geography stuff but still need to go into town to get some folders. Might go to the gym tomorrow and then get a few last minute bits.

Bower I hope your shoulder feels better ASAP!

Thanks for all the thoughts re DD1. I’m sad her first boyfriend was like that (not that any should be obviously! But you know what I mean). Glad she’s more able to recognise bad behaviour though, she had an awful experience with a home ed bully which really affected us for a few years (her mum was a vile bully too) but it seems she’s stronger for the experience now.

I think I’m going to brave the science museum with DS this month. Their interactive bit is open and I’ve wanted to try that since it opened. They’ve got an offer on for a cheaper annual pass (for the wonderlab specifically - the main museum is still free) if you buy this month. I also realised that next time I go to mum’s I could have my day in London alone first - normally I go to theirs via Croydon and tram/bus as it’s cheaper, but I can go to the station on their road by changing at Victoria, so I can just use the travelcard as they are in zone 5... saves money that way too. :o

Hello, I've been lurking a bit over the summer and having a look at the FlyLady website - can I join you for September please? I have shined the sink, which is a start but the porch is basically a pile of shoes, I think we wear about half of them, so could edit there. Me and DH both work FT out of the home and I have 2 older teenagers, one at college and one due to go to uni in October. I am looking for household serenity - otherwise I get to Saturday morning, like now, and the place is a bombsite.

Hi all! I’ve had a lovely few days away from social media. I’ve managed to meal plan for the next month and then will prep and freeze tomorrow. I’m all sorted for school now, everything is washed and ironed and labelled. I’m back to work next thursday as I’ve had this week off to do DS1’s settle in days. I turn 18 weeks pregnant today, and have a scan in 2 weeks so am looking forward to that. I have read through but completely forgot personals so hello newcomers!!

I'm struggling sorting out my zones for cleaning as don't fit with the templates I see.
The problem is, and this isn't a stealth boast I seem to have too many rooms.
Here goes: Front room, back room, dining kitchen, Conservatory (laundry room), Hall, downstairs loo.
Then, upstairs: office/ spare bedroom, another spare bedroom, landing, bathroom, upstairs toilet, master bedroom, dd bedroom.
How would you break that down into suitable zones, anyone?

Oh, I forgot to ask about the garden, small front and larger back. Dh mows the lawn and enjoys back garden, the front is mine and not very welcoming.
