First of all, a big thank you to SingToTheSky for leading us through the August thread, (you can park your mop and hang up your duster now)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here . Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

Reading all your housework lists has been very useful. I'm trying to get DIY/life admin things done first, then I'll go back to flylady. I tend to focus on laundry (a load a day), dishwasher, cooking, worktops, bathroom, sinks and tidying as I go. Things like the dusting get forgotten Blush. I'm focussed on decluttering and hoping that when it's finished, I'll have a house which is easy to clean. I'm not sure that will ever happen Grin.

Mog It sounds like a very stressful job.

Develsko I don't focus on the zones if I have something else to do, but if you have time you could? Or just focus on the room if not?

Just popping in. Haven’t read all the posts from today but great to see you SC. We’ve missed you.

Ta da
Lovely long shower and washed my hair and conditioned it. I still love that shower.
DS1 turned up unexpectedly but made himself a coffee and helped himself to cake. Just as well I left the door open. DH had gone to cut DS2s grass in the nick of time as it is wet, wet ,wet now.
🍁 Empty dishwasher.
🍁Tidy kitchen
🍁 sweep floor.
🍁 Brushed path and picked up a pile. Thought I would get in between showers as it is easier to brush up when damp.
🍁washed up cups and plates.
🍁Emptied vacuum.
🍁Vacuumed upstairs hall and stairs again.
🍁 Made bed.
🍁S&S bathroom, probably go back in there to do shower drain🤮

Thinking about an hour in boudoir.
Sitting room tidy and clean bar one PRC

Hall downstairs ok.
Hall upstairs not.

I still need to de clutter. I am very much a person who thinks ...it might come in useful and...someone gave it to me so I should keep it. I was also keeping things for grandchildren but it doesn’t look much like I am getting any of those so I need to get rid of stuff.i kept quite a lot for school but since I appear to be moving on I am starting to let go a little.

I am sticking more to Flylady and it does seem to be working. Sometimes I have to cleanaround the clutter. We having been moving some of DDs things to the house that DS3 lives in. It is actually bigger than ours as it has a huge loft bedroom so we are putting her stuff there and I am thinking perhaps some of ours could go there.DS3 can’t argue much as he a) doesn’t own it and b) pays a low rent for living there because his mother and brother are kind.
Right have been summoned to lunch.
Will pop back later.

Thanks Alex, I wasn't sure.
I started the baby steps last week, so still have a way to go. However, I began right in the middle of sorting this room. So, I have to finish it or else we'll never be straight of the accumulated crap.
I do have a BRC though, so definitely in the right place Grin

I love the not striving for perfection. Do you know I actually find this bit easy as I'm not one for finishing a job, or not being satisfied. My dh is the perfectionist so all the tiddly jobs I don't have the patience for and high jobs are left to him.
We make a good team, as I do all the low cleaning.

My 16 year old dd has cleared her room, hoovered and cleaned the carpet. It's the first time I've seen it since March Grin She goes away to school on Sunday, so she was on threat of death to get it done Grin
She's our last at home and we were debating whether to downsize or not, hence the emptying of the loft and trying to declutter 30 years of family stuff.

@IWillWearTallGreenWellies

Goodness, that's a big decision Devlesko. Good luck.

Announcement:
I have finished the jacket. Repeat, I have finished the jacket. Before and after pics attached! (The finished jacket is slightly further away).

That's a lovely jacket, I can't find where you spoke about it, what did you do?
Brilliant for finishing it Grin

I know it's a huge decision, as we were thinking of moving to Wales permanently, not sure now, but will need to downsize. I think I'd miss grandchildren too much.

Gosh well done Willow taking in a jacket by that much is skilled work! It looks fab too!

Hello to Alexthelittlecat (if you are a newcomer - apologies have been dipping in and out of late). I'm not sure a complete declutter will ever happen in my case either; definitely lacking "belief" here but trying to plod on regardless!

Devlesko you should take any advice from me with a pinch of salt as my house is currently in a pitiful state, but fwiw, I would delutter any way that suits you and adapt Flylady to your indiv. requirements too. Same here wrt downsizing and indecision, accept in our case, it's "only" 20 years of clutter Grin and it looks like our dd may be at home for the first two years of uni (which is quite usual where we live). Hence the dithering.

Bower good luck with transfer of dd's things.

DD has come back from school, eaten lunch, and promptly gone for a nap. Let's just say the holiday habit of staying up till 1 am and getting up and dressed by 10 am doesn't work well when you have to start getting up again at 5.50 am for the first time in six months! Grin

She says that although everyone is wearing masks at school, no one is social distancing, and the teachers aren't enforcing it either. Their cour de récré has already been halved by a building project and so there is no space for anyone to move around at break and lunch time. Luckily she and her classmates are allowed out of the building at those times, but they still have to wend their way through narrow corridors and staircases, and through the crowded playground to get to the exit. And tomorrow she has to go on public transport for sport ... . Heigh ho. One just has to take sensible precautions, wipe down handles etc, and go with the flow.

Welcome Devlesko! If I was you I’d get the baby steps sorted, do the weekly home bleurgh (home blessing) and crack on with the room of doom. Once that’s done then maybe start on the zone stuff. We are quite flexible with fly lady’s rules on this thread Grin (but I agree, it does work).

Yay Wellies Star for jacket completion (that is not something I would even think about attempting. I’m very impressed at how clever you are)

Foxes that is so sweet!

SC I’m not sure I’m quite master level yet Blush. I’ve remembered something else from decluttering spree though - I had more success and motivation when doing a ‘relevant’ area. So for example, when I was really annoyed at buying more gift wrap because I couldn’t find what I had, and then realised I had loads, I sorted that out at the very next opportunity. Found a space for it to go (decluttered one!), got rid of what I didnt like or had got battered, collected all gift bags, tags, sellotape etc, and they are all in a neat easy to get to box. When something fell out of a cupboard and bopped me on the head, then that cupboard was next on the list. Declutter the areas that have the biggest impact on your life first. The loft etc can wait til last.

Also, if you’re feeling demotivated by deep cleans, why don’t you wait until a room is fully decluttered and how you like it before bothering? Just do enough to keep it hygienic. I gave up on the idea of having everywhere sparkling at the same time. It just isn’t practical unless I spend a full day doing it and banish DH and DD for at least a few days afterwards so I can enjoy it Your house is much bigger than mine too, cut yourself some slack Flowers

I don’t actually like the Kondo method either, but I do always want to make somewhere clean and tidy after watching it, and she does have some pearls of wisdom. Bower one that might help you is to do with gifts - they served their purpose when they were given to you (making the giver happy), it’s ok to let go of them if they don’t have any other purpose. I used to have massive guilt about getting rid of something someone else bought. I’m ruthless now. No one has noticed.

Forgot my ta das:
✅ upstairs tidied, dusted, hoovered
✅ cleaned cat vom off landing carpet Envy
✅ cleaned bathroom
✅ decluttered some too small coat hangers from
DD’s wardrobe.
✅ piled up DH’s random crap from around the house on his side of the bed with a “put me away to avoid divorce papers” note
✅ inspired by Foxes had a look through wardrobe. I now have a few items to donate, a bag of “like, but too small, you have until next year to lose weight or get rid” stuff, and I’ve put most of my summer stuff in a drawer. I’ll use the daily method to get rid of anything else from my new clearer wardrobe. Laundry basket is now full of autumn/winter bits that could do with a freshen up.
✅ cleaning cycle on WM
✅ vacuum cleaner maintenance. Washed the filters before emptying so had to sweep up the detritus when I missed the bin rather than hoovering it up Hmm
✅ bolognese simmering on the hob

Also had a trip to park with DD, played sylvanians families with her (and she helped me tidy) and had a frustrating game of snakes and ladders. TV time now and relaxing bath after tea. DH has kitchen duty as I’m on strike!

Aw, thanks for the welcome.
The room of doom is ready for use now. I found the bed under the junk, piled junk into distinctive categories, threw some stuff away, not much, just one bag.
Cleaned the floor and made the bed, which means dh has somewhere to go when I wake him snoring.
So not complete yet but ta da, it can be used. Grin

I've friends and family who sew but have always done it and are well practised.
I'm useless, can sew a button and a hem on trousers. Grin
Just washed up, not done sink as won't be going to bed till midnight. I'm an owl, so often up at night.
A bat got in last night, my dd friends told her to shout at it as it wouldn't like noise. I was downstairs she was on the phone.
Luckily it went out again.

Links for Thursday 3rd September

We continue in Zone 1: the Entrance, Front Porch and Dining Room

Spend 15 minutes decluttering here before moving onto detailed cleaning.

Today’s mission is to gather up all the shoes, coats etc that gather in your entry way and put them away properly.

Our third baby step is to explore the Flylady website for hints, tips and inspiration (and a lot of twaddle too)

Habit of the month is Before Bed Routine

Thursday focus is errand day Any task to be done outside of the home: grocery shopping, tip runs, dry cleaning, doctor appointments, that sort of thing.

Thank you everyone for my welcomes everyone. Sorry that I’m so late to reply, it was my first day back at work since March today and the DC’s first day back at nursery. DD is in what should be her final year (but she’s summer born so I’m considering deferring her for a year) so she has to wear a uniform. She looked so grown up!. We got home and I have lit some candles to make things cosy and accidentally picked out the Christmas ones so now I’m feeling very festive. How autumnal has the weather been today?!

Thank you mog for the links, quick question about the decluttering. Is it just things you don’t need/want? Because my house is quite cluttered (by choice) so don’t want to get very minimalist.

mc 2 kids, 2 guinea pigs and 1 dog is deffo a whirlwind😂. Love it though!

mog a night time routine here is carnage! I try to settle the kids in front of the tv with a milk cup of tea or some warm milk (hot chocolate if I’ve decided to be a nice mom), they’re fine until it comes to actual bed time as DS just won’t sleep without me and DD usually climbs in my bed at about 1am. I can’t remember the last night I slept alone, and the dog sleeps at the end of the bed!

That’s really sweet of your DS foxes

Welcome devlesko! And good luck with the downsizing

wellies good job with the jacket! I definitely haven’t got the skills to do anything like that.

Welcome devlesko I found that once I got started with fly lady you'll pick up things that work for you and ignore or modify the things that don't. At a bare minimum I get my clothes out for the next day as then I feel prepared for the day when I wake up.

SC you're right! I do need to order a duvet and cover. I may just do that soon (maybe for an anniversary gift for us both in a couple of months). I do need to measure though. DH is tall and we have a US king size bed. From my experience UK beds are a little smaller so I'll need to make sure it's big enough. In fact, I can seem to find the duvets, just not the covers, it's frustrating.

wellies well done on your sewing job, that jacket looks much more tailored now.

Ta Das:
🍎 Mowed lawn in back garden, ran out of daylight for the front
🍏 Picked the best looking apples from our tree. We have had a lot more this year. Last year we only had 11, the year before was 3 and we planted it the previous year. We had somewhere between 30 & 50, but most got eaten by earwigs.
🍎 Got outfit ready for tomorrow
🍏 Took a shower.
DC already rotated DW and did LOL. I had DS pick up dog poop while I was cooking dinner before mowing.
This was all after working all day and stopping off at the store on the way home for donuts. That's his choice for birthday treats at school. He was pretty bummed out that he couldn't take homemade treats this year. I would rather make something, but it is a lot easier to just buy it. I do still have a cake I'll need to bake though, he's requested German chocolate.

I'm now having trouble staying awake so will have to stop there 🍒👋 to everyone.

Morning all,

Welcome to Anorange and Devlesko (I recognise your name from the GCSE threads, I've got a 16yo too).

I am so behind with the school stuff. I think I've got complacent through the secondary school years as very little has been needed for September in terms of replacement uniform etc but DD (y10) has needed a lot of new stuff, there are reams of letters and forms coming from both their schools, DS's school transport needs sorting (and his EHCP chasing). Plus I'm busy at work and we are going away this weekend.

Yesterday I was planning to WFH and set myself up at the patio table as it was a nice warm day, but I couldn't get the VPN to work and ended up picking up all my stuff and going into the office after all. But did manage to get a few jobs done before and after.

My approach to clutter tends to be reactive not scheduled decluttering. So when it causes a problem in a particular area I deal with it and usually some more parts of the same room over the next few days. I stick to morning and evening routines fairly well but missions tend to be in response to noticing things need doing rather than scheduled too. We do by and large keep on top of laundry.

Decluttering is hampered at the moment by charity shops having very restricted donation capacity.

Ah wellies, the term ‘playing’ was used loosely. I’m rubbish at it. I’m basically there to help her find the tiny bits she wants. And every now and then I get an instruction or “mammy! You aren’t playing! Pick something up!” Grin

Orange to me the decluttering is of any areas that are getting you down, and enough to make cleaning (and life) easier. No rule that you have to be super minimalist or get rid of things that still make you happy.

✅ beds made
✅ quick tidy
✅ s&s
✅ made it to work on time

Definitely no minimalism here either, I like a cosy house with lots of things in it, shelves full of books (but not piles of coins/receipts/hairbands in front of them) that sort of thing.

Ds - 'Lets go to the park'
Dd - 'No! Its raining. Now you say lets go swimming'
Ds - 'Lets go swimming'
Dd - 'No! Now you cry'

Hi all. In “there’s too much to do” mode ATM but just had a nice long sleep and hoping to be at least slightly productive Hmm. Not doing ta da lists ATM.

Tomorrow and Saturday are potentially busy so won’t have much time to sort things. Sigh. Priority is making sure DD1 has school stuff ready (uniform is all bought but not ironed etc and I will need to get more PE stuff as she has 7 PE/sport science/dance lessons a week 😂) and home ed planning for DS. No way I’m going to get my assignment sorted before Monday but once DS is settled into his work I’ll have time hopefully, might aim to finish in the first week.

PO3.1
🔴up, dressed in gym clothes, meds and breakfast
🔴discuss plan for the rest of the day with DH - was planning to go to the gym, and I could do errands in town after
🔴put dryer on and start towel wash (including DH showing me how to use the new WM as I haven’t actually tried it yet!)
