First of all, a big thank you to SingToTheSky for leading us through the August thread, (you can park your mop and hang up your duster now)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here . Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

Sorry it was the Whitworth we went to before going to a competition. Some people came up to us after our warm up then we sang some songs then the ones we were singing in the comp. and said how lovely it was to wander around looking at the art work and hearing us sing. Apparently they could hear us from quite a way from where we were standing.

Lisette sorry I thought you were in Glasgow. I must have got muddled with someone else. My nephew is in Aberdeen and it is where my sister is getting treated. DH knows it well as his work’s office was there. He left from Dyce 😉 we lived further west for ten years.
I laughed when I enlarged that photo what a mess! 🤣 it had the same set up on the other side of the cooker with shelves. It took more cleaning than the new one. I still have the dresser on the other wall which is cluttered DS3 I say it is full of memories. Things people and children have given me.

So I have been sorting some bedroom.Tidied out undies drawer. Took out some I never wear. Have a pile of ...I might wear and if I don’t chuck. Not sure where to put them where do you put them? Bin? Clothes at supermarket. Most have hardly ever been worn. Too scratchy, too small, too big fall down or just uncomfortable. I like sloggies and bond knickers. You pull them on and they stay there until you need a wee.

Back later DS1 has turned up.

HauntingHazel · 30/09/2020 14:56

Name change for Halloween 🎃 I would have changed it tomorrow but didn't want to forget what I came up with.
Welcome never this is a lovely thread to be on, we're here to help and answer any questions you might have/ give advice if needed. How old are your DC? You sound very busy.
bower I prefer your kitchen now, not that it looked bad before, just not to my taste.

I just wanted to stop in and say hi this morning, I'm working today so no flying will get done here today, other than morning and evening routines.
🍒👋 to everyone!

HauntingHazel · 30/09/2020 14:57

ED thank you for volunteering to run October thread.
zoo we miss you, I hope you are doing okay lovely 😍

HauntingHazel · 30/09/2020 15:28

bower if the underwear is in good condition I would think you could donate to a women's shelter or something like that. If you're unsure, put them on, try and wear them for a day. I throw them away if they don't work for me though, usually I do try them out a few times until I get to that point.

Sorry for the multiple posts.

FreakyForestier · 30/09/2020 15:34

No stress Bower - we live east of Dyce. Nice to know you were in these parts once. Lisette here with Halloween name change 🎃🌿🌿🌿🍂🍂

FreakyForestier · 30/09/2020 15:36

So wet here today. I know the key thing is waterproof clothes but even so I'm not tempted outside the door.

Mc3209 · 30/09/2020 16:01

Bower Freaky such a small world, I love it! I am more central Aberdeen. I barely fit into my waterproof today. I am seriously the size of a tank.. I thought I would wear proper pants today (ie not leggings), but guess what, I couldn't get my maternity pants past my butt 😂 and they were fitting fine around 20 weeks. Gotta laugh..

Lisette1940 · 30/09/2020 16:31

MC you are due this month so your body's at peak pregnancy. My rings were very tight at that stage. Just non stop wet today. Ds has outside soccer practice tonight 🤪⚽ am perusing barm brack recipes - an Irish soaked fruit tea cake served at Halloween. Usually it's made with a hidden ring in it for good luck for the finder.

anorangeaday · 30/09/2020 19:20

Hi all, it’s freezing here. It got dark so early too. I’m knackered today, I think maybe it’s the weather but I didn’t get much sleep last night!.

Thank you for the well wishes for DS.

Welcome never!

That is terrible of the school wellies!!

I’m so sorry to hear about your dog hazel💐

mc I got quite big at the stage you’re out, I wasn’t comfortable in anything!

Sorry I haven’t caught up with all of you, I’m so tired!. I have attached a pic of the DC getting very excited about the rain earlier to make up for my lack of personals.

Swooping into September - Flylady fledglings assemble!
Bowerbird5 · 30/09/2020 20:03

FreakyLisette🤣 here is mine. Well Mary Berry’s actually from the Hamlin All Colour Cook Book.

Barm Brack

You will need: 12fl oz cold tea
7oz. Soft brown sugar
12oz. Mixed dried fruit
10 oz. self raising flour
1 egg, beaten
Prep time10 mins.
Cooking time 1 hr 45 mins
Oven setting 350F Gas mark 4 180C

Method: Put tea, sugar and dried fruit in a bowl, cover and leave to soak overnight. Tea that has been leftover in the day can be used.

Well grease an 8inch round cake tin, or a 2lb loaf tin.

Mix the soaked fruit and sugar plus the liquid into the flour. Add the beaten egg to make a smooth mixture. Turn into the tin and bake in a moderate oven for about 1 hour 45 minutes.
Turn out and cool on a wire rack.

It is really quick and easy if you weigh out the flour the night before.
Lovely served with a bit of butter. Great for packed lunches or for taking Fell walking.

MC fancy that. We used to live along the coast of the Moray Firth. Occasionally took DH to Dyce airport including through the snow once at stupid o’clock. The police wouldn’t let me back until I told them I had left my babies. It was a a wall of snow most of the way. Nephew is testing bloods and hopes to progress to research. DDs BF is in Glasgow but studied in Aberdeen including Masters and is now in research.

Hazel it was last done in 1987/88 we bought the base cupboards cherry veneer and never afforded the wall units so had £2.50 shelves until we could which never happened. This time I waited for years saving up and made sure I got everything! Those days we had a very old Rayburn that was in the house. We took it out relaid the floor with a damp proof, concreted over and it was put back in.

Knickers are like brand new but just ...there knickers. I just didn’t think they should go in land fill.

Mc you are nearly at full term. I bet you have a beautiful bump.

I haven’t been well again today. Stomach ache, queasy then was almost sick. I was like this a few days ago. So after tidying bedroom a bit, 3x LOL, vacuum floor and hall and sort my drawers in my drawers🤣 I have been on the sofa with a blanket and in my PJs and a cardi. DH has lit the 🔥 fire yeah.

Bowerbird5 · 30/09/2020 20:05

Oh they look so cute orange

Where’s zoo? Gone AWOL again 🤦🏼‍♀️

Bowerbird5 · 30/09/2020 20:06

Hamlyn damn auto correct!

merryhouse · 30/09/2020 20:09

wellies the other thing - have you looked at workhouse records? I've seen some where the name on the census entry is literally just initials, which is seriously unhelpful for search purposes! Presumably whoever filled it in thought it wouldn't matter as they kept such meticulous records of admissions... Maybe some prisons and asylums did the same thing?

Lisette1940 · 30/09/2020 20:10

They are very sweet orange. I hope they saw a rainbow 🌈🌈🌈🌂🌦️🌦️☔☔

Lisette1940 · 30/09/2020 20:20

Bower thank you!! We had the Hamlyn All Colour cookbook in my childhood home. Delighted with the recipe 🍰🍰🍰

Lisette1940 · 30/09/2020 20:22

Ah blast it. Name change only working on desktop site. FreakyForedtier here 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃

Mc3209 · 30/09/2020 20:48

Orange they are so adorable! ☺️
Bower I am sorry to hear you are not feeling well. Does your GP have any bright ideas on how to fix it? One of the good things about colder weather is a proper fire and cosy nights in.

My to do didn't quite happen today as planned:
🎉Morning routine
🎉LOL
🎉Evening routine
🎉A bit of dusting in the hallway

Ta didn't:

  • dinner: decided to get a take away today as I am now officially on mat leave! It felt so good putting out of office message on my work email!
  • bathroom blitz didn't happen. Did the usual S&S as part of the routines, but did not have the will to do it properly. There is almost tomorrow.

Ooh I have an old copy of the Hamlyn book we inherited with the house (along with a Mrs Beeton’s and a hand written notebook recipes from the previous owner that shed started in the 1930s!). I’ll have to peruse them again I think.

Welcome Never. It’ll be lovely to have you with us for October.

Sorry DS is having a tough time with 6th form Wellies.

Sorry your pup is in pain Hazel.

Hope you’re ok if you’re lurking Zoo.

Rest of personals have left me again so I’ll just provide cherry waves 🍒 👋

I’m half way through my working week. Still have some semblance of sanity. I’m on top of the laundry. House is teetering on the edge but hasn’t quite descended into chaos, and I’m about to go and shine my sink. We’ll not mention diet or exercise though Blush.

Thanks for volunteering for the new thread ED and thanks for a great September thread Mog Flowers. See you all in October.

TheUpholder · 30/09/2020 20:56

Oh happy mat leave Mc! I loved those few weeks before DD arrived. Pottering at home, nesting, relaxing and flashing the window cleaner on more than one occasion

Mc3209 · 30/09/2020 21:09

Wellies thank you!
Gosh, family tree building sounds very stressful. I hope you manage to sort the mystery.
Well done on conquering dinner!

Up semblance of sanity is all we can hope for.

Mc3209 · 30/09/2020 21:10

Cross post! Thank you, Up! I am planning on taking plenty of naps tomorrow. That number one item on the agenda.
