First of all, a big thank you to SingToTheSky for leading us through the August thread, (you can park your mop and hang up your duster now)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here . Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

Oh and I also spent some time looking at other options for Cagletini’s birthday. Seeing what she’s into and crucially what entertains her I’m looking more at puzzly, fine motor skills type stuff if anyone has any thoughts!

Time for an episode of modern family to chill before sleeping.

Lisette1940 · 27/09/2020 00:05

MC all's forgiven now. He's mortified. He's not a details man. Sing Cagletini's getting so big. Another birthday.

THATbasicrebelBITCH · 27/09/2020 06:40

Morning all

sing our ds is about a year older i think (coming up to 4) this year he has really enjoyed Kid K'Nex

bower well done on cake sale Cake🍰🧁🎂

HungryHazelEyes · 27/09/2020 07:43

Anniversary dinner was a success. ILs liked the gifts we gave them. One of which was my time for whatever they need help with, a couple weekends.

Ta Das:
🌻 Skyped mum
🌻 LOL x1 (was washed yesterday but left wet and it stunk)
🌻 Pulled chicken thighs out of freezer to thaw for dinner
🌻 Went to the store for a few things needed for dinner
🌻 Took a shower and defrosted legs
🌻 Washed dishes by hand that can't go in DW
🌻 Prepared dinner - grilled chicken thighs, sautéed shrimp, roasted red potatoes and roasted carrots & parsnips
🌻 Rotated DW
🌻 Relaxed, it was actually a calm day, no stress involved
🌻 Played a couple games of battleship with DS
🌻 Played Newmarket after dinner
🌻 Made pumpkin cheesecake mousse as I didn't get around to making any last week.

Tomorrow DH is helping to split the wood from the pine tree that fell at ILs, I'll be watching his 1yr old and roped DD into helping me, so I don't think it'll be quite as relaxing as today 🥺 it's almost 1am here now, so I best be getting to sleep.

foxessocks · 27/09/2020 08:01

Morning all! Lisette argh!! That's so annoying!! Glad all is forgiven though 🙂

Yesterday my mil stayed longer than expected so we ended up getting a takeaway as ran out of time to do my chicken so the kids just had a quick pizza and then bed.

Today my plan is simple - stay away from my phone so I get more done!!

So hopefully I won't be here again until much much later 😂

SingToTheSky · 27/09/2020 13:08

Morning all. Or not!

Trying to gather the energy for a quick trip to town. Mainly for DD1 but also because I need to actually leave the house properly, I haven’t been out all week except for two fitness classes which my friend kindly picked me up/dropped me off for. 😳

Afternoon all, DS isn’t very well. He was sick last night but has been sick a few times today too. I think he has a bug☹️. He’s feeling quite sorry for himself, he’s currently cuddling me and the dog (pic attached).

Thank you sing, I’ve noticed I can have such an unhealthy relationship with food when I’m anxious/depressed. I generally stop eating, which I think is my way of self-harm. But I’ve also binged a lot too. I hope you’re feeling better after your news.

Thank you mc!

Thank you hazel the movie day was lovely, just what was needed. Glad you enjoyed your night out.

Wel done on the bake sale bower 🧁 🍰 🎂

So annoying about DH lisette! Sometimes I am glad I’m single.

wellies this is my meal plan for the next week, I only do lunches on the weekend. Mon- sausage and leak mash pie
Tues- prawn tikka massala
Wed- creamy chicken stew
Thurs- fish pie mac n cheese
Fri- chicken and lemon spaghetti
Sat-lamb tagine
Sun- Sunday lunch

Lunch
Sat- cheese sandwiches, melon, tomatoes and yoghurt.
Sun- ham sandwich, blackberries, cucumber and yoghurt.

merryhouse · 27/09/2020 16:05

Lisette ROFL(YSST) - did the Essex electrician not say "erm - no chance"?

TaDa Saturday
used up a pile of split tomatoes (home-grown glut) on fried bread for breakfast
went to gym (weights)
finished washing up from takeaway
washed up from lunch
decluttered half a gelatine packet making some coffee jelly for the cake - a sort of tiramisu inspired concept. Unfortunately I (a) didn't allow enough setting time and (b) entirely forgot to add any sugar...
made a coffee cake
made vegetable soup
mended two of S1's t-shirts - both had gone under the arms and one got scratched in several places while he was blackberrying
made mascarpone icing and iced cake (ignored the jelly Grin)
watched Hercules
Had Family Conversation

ToDay
saw S1 off back darn sarf (sob)
lol - whites
washed up, twice

ToMorrow
clear post table, including of the box of stuff for the charity shop
ironing
hoover
re-set spare room now it's empty (sob)

merryhouse · 27/09/2020 16:22

Mondays - often a curry; with rice, and naan bread sometimes
Tuesdays - maybe toad-in-the-hole, or perhaps stuffed hearts and mash, or chicken thighs and chips
Wednesdays - during term time this is a One Oven Dish meal, so tuna pasta bake or lasagne
Thursdays - perhaps pies, or chilli (if yesterday wasn't lasagne) and jacket potatoes, maybe a stir-fry now S1 has left (sob)
Fridays - home-made pizzas (unless we treat ourselves to a takeaway)
Saturdays - burgers or fish fingers and chips for lunch, then bacon sandwiches or soup for tea
Sundays - cheese on toast or scrambled egg and potato waffles for lunch, then a roast dinner or similarly special steak or fish

Tuesday and Thursday might swap over, and sometimes Monday gets in on the act too. We've recently had risotto (now I've realised S2's dislike of it only extended to the fish part, not the rice concept), cauliflower cheese and potato wedges, and fish pie one day S2 was out. Sometimes at the weekend we'll have pork pie, or maybe pate but S2 went off that after one holiday when we had it every day.

foxessocks · 27/09/2020 16:23

I have successfully avoided my phone until now apart from a recipe at lunchtime, hooray! Not sure I got loads done though, time flew today

Ta das
Cooked lunch
Did a couple of hours work
Went for a run
Dishwasher on X 2
Washing on and hung up
Washing up
Updated online food shop
Got the kids to make a birthday card for someone
Played board games with the kids

As you can see not a lot of actual housework 🤷‍♀️ feeling a bit tired today

Wellies I want to try the writing it all down method too, considered it today but couldn't quite find the motivation , seems an overwhelming task just writing it all down tbh!

My meal plan which randomly includes some breakfast lunch and cake ideas in no particular order!! I've copied and pasted from my lists in my phone so sorry it's a bit random
overnight cocoa oats / jacket potatoes
toad in the hole / Coconut and carrot macaroons
breakfast smoothie / cheese straws / chicken stir fry (lemon)
King prawn noodles
roast chicken
Chicken breasts with cream cheese / pesto
Salmon, sweet potato chips and salad

Fish pie / blackberry and lemon fool
Paprika chicken
Spaghetti Bolognese
Shepherd's pie
prawn linguine
veggie chilli with sweet potato
macaroni cheese

Lisette1940 · 27/09/2020 16:25

The woman taking the details didn't bat an eyelid at the postcode apparently. They realised the mistake afterwards but didn't phone back. Local sparky was very nice about it when DH phoned on Saturday so we'll sort it next week. All this comes hot on the heels of dh neglecting to watch the boiler water pressure which I had delegated to him. Hence the boiler water pressure being in the red zone and me discovering the leak under the floorboards. He's just not practical. He's very good at his research area of abstract philosophical/historical ideas and is considered to be brilliantly polymathic. He can cope with details in that realm. And he's emotionally intelligent and likes ironing. Practicalities not so much of a forte. Anorange being single is simpler and has the advantage of less laundry and a tidier space 😁

Lisette1940 · 27/09/2020 16:28

Lovely menu suggestions merry. I just can't manage risotto - my culinary blind spot.

merryhouse · 27/09/2020 16:31

"emotionally intelligent and likes ironing" - I reckon I could put up with quite a bit in exchange for that Grin

(Mind you, it's easy for me to say that, sitting here with a husband who is scarily practical...)

Lisette1940 · 27/09/2020 16:35

He's now cooking all the time too 😁 If I can get him to crack risotto...

Mc3209 · 27/09/2020 18:40

Ta da:
🎉Aquariums sorted including filter maintenance X3. For everyone who has an aquarium, highly recommend Purigen. Lasts about 6 months, purifies the water and removes ammonia, AND you can recharge it with bleach. I hate cleaning filters, especially the one from the big tank with goldfishies. They poo like elephants.
🎉LOL X3. Autumn starts for me when I put the electric bed heater under the main bed sheet.
🎉Hoovered downstairs
🎉Morning routine (evening routine will be done before bed)
DH is cooking dinner - roasted leg of lamb.

Mc3209 · 27/09/2020 18:44

orange I hope your DS will feel better soon.

ta da
🔹renewed spirit a little by sleeping in till almost 10am!
🔸communicated with tutor about questions and practical
🔹went to town with DD1 to get some clothes
🔸set up habit tracker app
🔹ordered birthday presents for Cagletini
🔸made Caglets do laundry
🔹got Cagletini’s clothes and bag ready for tomorrow
🔸got my swimming bag and clothes (including for after shower at home!) ready for tomorrow
🔹sorted meds for the week
🔸finally downloaded phone update
🔹filled WM ready to switch on after swimming
🔸added lots to the plan for this week in home ed, sent list to DH for tomorrow while I’m out
🔹booked some dance classes and discovered they’ve added gymnastics for DD1’s age so booked those too, for up to half term
🔸paid for dance for this week (need to do the rest later)

Think DH needs to ring the doctor for DS in the morning as he has been getting weird pains in his side on and off for a while.

And he needs to phone the HA as the water isn’t running from the taps. Gah. Why is there always SOMETHING. 🙄

Anyway I’m off to sleep feeling like I have achieved a little this evening at least!

anorangeaday · 28/09/2020 01:31

DS has been sick all over me. He isn’t well at all bless him. No nursery for him tomorrow so I will call Dgran in the morning and see if she can come over to stay with him, he’ll be in for a right treat if she can. She spoils him rotten. I won’t sleep now, I really don’t like when they’re sick, I work myself up and worry about them choking.

Thank you for the well wishes for my boy.

lisette I was reading a thread earlier about housework and husbands, it has made me feel better about not having one. Even as a single mom I’ve had much less work to do than when I was with the ex. And I don’t have an annoying man child who requires me to think for him.

I hope DS is okay sing

HungryHazelEyes · 28/09/2020 03:14

Oh orange I hope DS feels better soon.
Impressive list sing it sounds like you're prep might make for an easier week for you. Hopefully your DS is okay too.
wellies my DC don't eat any prawns, but I still make them, just have a 2nd protein, like chicken that DS likes. DD is vegetarian so avoids all meat and fish. I love them, so it's more for me to eat!

Ta Das today:
🦅 Helped ILs clean up their backyard from the pine tree falling. Raked a bunch of pine needles and pieces of branches.
🦢 Helped DD babysit a little bit while his dad was helping DH split the wood from the tree.
🦅 Swept some of the saw dust up from them splitting wood.
🦢 Took DD to work
🦅 Had to move around a lot of logs/ firewood to make room for the new stuff, pic attached. We will be using that for years! The wood storage has never been so full.
🦢 Had leftovers from last night for dinner
🦅 Got my lunch ready for tomorrow
🦢 Took a shower

I'm now sitting relaxing on the couch before bed, I'm aching already, I'm going to feel it tomorrow.
🍒👋 to everyone!

foxessocks · 28/09/2020 07:10

hazel that is some seriously tidy fire wood 🌟

Sing let us know if the habit tracker app is any good? You are well organised for tomorrow!

Orange hope your ds feels better soon

I had such a bad nights sleep, I woke up at about 3am and felt a bit weird, almost like I felt hungry or nervous, couldn't work the feeling out but I didn't really get any decent sleep after that, kept waking up.

The kids are still asleep but I need to get them up in a minute, they always sleep later on a Monday because of swimming on a Sunday!

School run and then work all day today, going to feel like a mammoth task I think

Bowerbird5 · 28/09/2020 08:24

Thanks everyone about the bake stall. I have been nudging the boys to donate now for a cake of there choice. DS3 thinks he might have sticky toffee pudding because he doesn’t really eat cake. Waiting for the other two to reply. I am up to £68 now.

Hazel that is a good stack of wood. DH made our wood store out of pallets too.
I still haven’t caught up on all the news. Home bleugh today when I get up.
