Swooping into September - Flylady fledglings assemble!

First of all, a big thank you to SingToTheSky for leading us through the August thread, (you can park your mop and hang up your duster now)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here . Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

I am so sorry for being such a crappy thread leader and only doing links.

I must have asked myself 100 times why I volunteered to do the September thread - this month is always crazy busy in GP land as it is peak flu season and we have loads of vaccination clinics - at the same time as managing in the pandemic!

House of Mog is messy and needs a deep clean, but I just CBA at the moment. Everyone is fed and has clean clothes, and I am keeping up with my C25K programme which is doing wonders for my mental well being.

SingToTheSky · 28/09/2020 20:42

Mog don’t be daft you’re not a crappy leader at all! You have steered us perfectly through the month. The fact you’ve taken the time to give us links and guidance when you’re so busy in your very stressful job is very much appreciated!

Would lentils cook in the soup maker up that would be a game changer!

Mc3209 · 28/09/2020 20:55

Ta da:
🎉Living room blitzed, including hoovering under the sofa cushions.
🎉LOL
🎉Morning routine and evening routine
🎉Indoor plants watered
🎉Meal plan for the week made.

Most of the house is actually decluttered (here are the words I never thought I'd say!). The only 2 mountains to climb are 1) paperwork organisation/sort out and 2) garden sort out. I am dreading both tasks, I know it will take forever to sort out each. Outdoor gardening is not my strongest point.

TheUpholder · 28/09/2020 20:58

I’m not sure to be honest, I just cook the arse off them in my ancient pressure cooker pot (just as a pan, I’m too scared to use it as a pressure cooker 😂). I can’t see why not.

Mog you’ve been a fab leader! The links have kept me far more on track than I would have been. Fed and clothed is all that mattered really. Hope work quietens down for you a bit, although I know we aren’t expecting anything to quieten down in the hospital anytime soon Sad

Dancingtomusic · 28/09/2020 21:30

Mog- you are doing bloody amazing at leading and posting links. You are keeping your family fed, clean and alive! Thats more important, I am in awe of you. How do you remember everything?!

Dancingtomusic · 28/09/2020 21:42

Sing- i have experimented abit with lentils- not in the soupmaker but on the hob.

The orange coloured (Red lentils as know in the shops) red lentils are the best for soups as they can be cooked in 20mins.

I do soak them in a bowl and cover with lukewarm water for 10mins. I feel it softens them more and reduces cooking time. Rinse until the water is clear and then pop into the soup maker.

You're doing fine Mog. And doing c25k too. I've stopped running. Need absolutely to restart.

anorangeaday · 28/09/2020 23:07

Evening all! Dgran has DS today, he’s feeling a lot better. He’s going to have tomorrow off too but hopefully back by Wednesday. DSis broke up with her bf and is feeling a bit rubbish, so I’ve sent her some chocs and flowers to cheer her up. Will hopefully be able to go out together soon.

Thanks for all the well wishes for DS, it’s very kind of you❤️

foxes I’m sorry that you didn’t get much sleep💐

dancing Dgran spoiled him absolutely rotten. He’s a very lucky boy.

sing I hate sick, I wish I could just take it away from them. I’m okay being sick myself, but I don’t like other people’s. I’m glad you managed to get swimming.

Your kitchen is gorgeous bower! Sorry about your migraine. I hope you’re feeling better soon!

Don’t be silly, you’re a great thread leader mog.

Mog thank you, honestly you have done really well with the thread, your job sounds very full-on too. Remember the Fledgling saying, all fed, no one dead. That's enough on busy days.

Bower thanks for the photos, it's between the pale blue and marine blue I think. I like the graphite and white as well. So much to think about. I like the sound of that recipe too, we quite often have salmon with rice, peas and sweet chilli sauce.

Lisette1940 · 28/09/2020 23:19

greenwellies has she joined a convent? With six kids I would for a break.

Sfuff is a bit like sfaff = stuff and faff

Lisette1940 · 29/09/2020 00:38

MC match the jobs to the weather - wet day do paper but if dry then tackle small area of garden

HungryHazelEyes · 29/09/2020 04:42

I have a headache so won't be putting too much on here tonight. I had a rough day today at work, which kept getting worse. DD had a friend come over after school, didn't ask, she needed dropped off at home, DS had football practice and DD had to go to work. I was able to do it (had to leave work 15 minutes early) but barely. Then I walked into the house 🤬 the kitchen was an absolute disaster. Dirty clothes that were sorted into piles still on the floor (no more loads were getting done, so no need to leave them out). DW not rotated. Plates with melted cheese left on the table. Mail not checked. I was beyond mad.
DD will not be allowed any more friends over after school as she didn't do her chores last week when friends came over either.

So I had DS help me fold clothes from the dryer so the wet load could go in. I had him rinse the cheesy plates while I made dinner. He helped me clean up the kitchen after dinner as well.
I rotated the DW and wiped down the countertops and sink. I had picked up the dirty clothes and put them back in the dirty laundry basket (that was actually the first thing I did).
I'm done, I'm so over feeling like I'm the only one who wants a clean house. DH was helping a friend while we were cleaning up at home, or he would have helped too. I will have to pick DD up soon from work, going to close my eyes for a few minutes to get the headache to go away. It's just after 9:30pm here.

foxessocks · 29/09/2020 07:00

hazel I'd be fed up too! Hope your headache has gone now

Your thread leading is spot on mog , you sound incredibly busy right now 🌟

I felt so strange all day yesterday, I'm guessing due to lack of sleep. Slept better last night once I'd finally fallen asleep later than usual, don't know what's going on with me 😴

Lisette :o I love the idea of sfuff/sfaff!
Thanks wellies looks like my typo might stick like leg defrosting! :o

Sorry about the headache hazel and hope you can get some more sleep tonight foxes

I am achy from the swim so I’m hoping yoga stretches me out a bit, I’m not looking forward to the walk (friend can’t make it today, usually go in her car) even though yesterday said walk was easy. But the bus times are so annoying it’s not really worth changing route to get the bus!

I’m also tired because I couldn’t resist watching the last couple of episodes of Modern Family season 1. Love it.

Loads of sfuff to do today!!! Mostly study and various other tasks that all require me to be confident and motivated Hmm

Lisette1940 · 29/09/2020 08:16

hungryhazel 💐💐💐💐 nothing worse than a headache, except maybe toothache.

SingToTheSky · 29/09/2020 13:16

Walk to yoga was actually fine other than discovering the underpass had flooded! So crossing without being run over took a while :o but was still on time. And following on from when I had mentioned the other week that I was struggling with blood pooling in my legs (=dizzy) the lovely teacher had written out some POTS-friendly yoga routines for me to take home! 😍

Posted parcel and a bit more shopping on the way home (no charity shop browsing this time).

Need to help DS with his geography this afternoon so won’t get any study time until later. We have DD1’s autism support session at 4 as well.

DS is definitely struggling with loneliness now. DD1 has so much more independence (partly age but she was still much more able than him at this age, his needs are much more apparent in that area) and she’s able to see friends more and go on sleepovers when households are allowed to mix* etc. His besties aren’t able to meet up much for various reasons and Cagletini’s sleep is messed up again since starting nursery so it’s hard to fit in time for him. It’s so difficult :( I really want to give him some nice experiences soon like going somewhere when the girls are at school/nursery, but money is a factor and of course there is the looming threat of more stuff closing down again. Any ideas please oh wise ones? 😔

SingToTheSky · 29/09/2020 13:22

*I am not entirely sure what the rules are on households mixing now?! We are a household of 5 so is one person still allowed round? Or two when DD1 is at school etc?

I think it also hasn’t helped (sorry just thinking aloud now!) that we had one week of his bestie coming round for a couple of lessons, which was brilliant - they were doing some work together and then played. But then they had colds so haven’t been able to come back yet which was just bad timing. So hopefully getting back to that will help too. Not entirely sure what happens if they tighten restrictions again though, it is for education primarily as they do lessons together first. Argh.

Lisette1940 · 29/09/2020 14:08

sing what are Ds's interests? Would even something like baking with just you and he be a treat for him? Are you near an art gallery or a museum?

Lisette1940 · 29/09/2020 14:10

sing artist date suggestions which could possibly be adapted for ds and you here

Lisette1940 · 29/09/2020 14:11

Perhaps skip 'spend a day naked' 😁😲
