Swooping into September - Flylady fledglings assemble!

First of all, a big thank you to SingToTheSky for leading us through the August thread, (you can park your mop and hang up your duster now)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here . Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

Lisette It's great, looking tidier already, glad you are enjoying doing your garden too. I'm thinking we'll be spending a lot of time at home this winter and don't want to look out the window and see a mess (it's not awful, just needs a little bit of work).

Lisette1940 · 24/09/2020 23:05

You've done a lot today orange. I see a Christmas movie made it to your list!

SingToTheSky · 25/09/2020 02:08

I’m annoyed at myself as I didn’t follow the plans I had to be a bit more prepared for this panic buying stuff once it looked like it wouldn’t happen again. Hopefully with restrictions put in place sooner things will be better this time.

Wired again, tomorrow (today) I have aquafit class which should be good so hopefully that will reset me a bit as it was much harder work than I remembered!

Lisette1940 · 25/09/2020 07:26

Good morning all fledglings. Hi de Hi.

Lisette1940 · 25/09/2020 07:38

I am planning porridge and a mug of strong coffee.

Mc3209 · 25/09/2020 08:16

Morning all!
Lisette I will join you on those plans. I actually like my porridge salty, not sweet, and there is something therapeutic in making it from rolled oats every morning.

Wellie Happy wedding anniversary, lovely about the brownies Cake.

Sing Good luck with the job hunt. I understand the feeling of losing yourself in everything. I feel the same with having children, they have poached my brain. Now we aren't having any more, I feel like I need to get my life back again.

SingToTheSky · 25/09/2020 11:15

Poached my brain... yes I can relate to that!

Ugh I am so so sleepy. Aqua will be a struggle. I’ve been so lazy this week, only actually left the house for yoga and both these outings are in the car as my friend does both classes with me, so I’ve not even walked to town as well as not doing any nursery runs this week.

Work advisor just sent me another possible volunteer role that could be really good for me as well. And my new assessment is all based on self development etc so quite good timing really.

foxessocks · 25/09/2020 11:43

I seem to have developed a m&s chicken and bacon sandwich habit Blush

Bowerbird5 · 25/09/2020 11:49

Sing it never occurred to me I am just pleased for you as three years ago I don’t think you would have considered looking for a job. It shows how you have gained confidence and I think the house move has helped you too. Good luck I say.

Wellies Happy Anniversary
I hope so but I am not going to come off the meds yet. I think I might try about January. I will have a chat to GP.
I am not going to look for a job outside of the home but I have had a look at craft ideas so I am considering a couple of things including Dolls House items as I went to a few fairs in Glasgow and there are lots of adult collectors. I am thinking about hand stitched things. First I would like to make more effort in the house. There may also be a chance to bake for a cafe but I am not sure how much they would pay. Would I actually like as a job? I might just retire.

Alex thank you for your thoughts. There is something about gardening that makes you feel better isn’t there. I have a young man coming to look at some pruning. I don’t know how to prune properly.

I am looking forward to clearing an area for the greenhouse in the winter. We are buying a glass one in the spring.

I am known for running late just about 5-10 minutes. I got to the GP surgery at 9 minutes early to find a note on the door to say 5 minutes before please so waited in cold. Went in and sat down. Receptionist asked about appointment then couldn’t find it. I was a whole week early!🤣BF won’t believe it.

I will put the salmon recipe on this afternoon. I must sort a bit of boudoir.
Ta da
Bed made
Bedding and curtain linings put into bedding chest.

Ta das
School run - got soaked!!
Me and ds changed clothes as we were so soggy
Went to m&s for bits for dinner (instead of takeaway, not sure what time dd friend will be here until so needed enough supplies!)
Washing hung up
Dishwasher unloaded and on again
Went to Wickes for click and collect, message said it was there, it was not Hmm
Made ds lunch

Need to collect dd and her friend shortly as they have half days Friday now, and then the chaos will begin...

Happy anniversary wellies have a lovely evening with your dh!

You're definitely not lazy sing . You have reminded me I have done any of the HIIT workouts I had planned to do twice a week...oh well still time before Sunday I suppose?!

foxessocks · 25/09/2020 11:53

Obviously that should say I haven't done any 🤦‍♀️

Signing in just to reassure wellies that I did stay awake in the aqua class :o it’s odd though, I am far fitter than when I did it before lockdown but it is so much harder than I remember 😳😂 I have a feeling I will only be swimming a very small amount when I get in the main pool. Need to book a lane for next week, having stood next to it twice now I am desperate to jump in! (Metaphorically. I don’t jump into pools. Nobody needs the resulting tsunami, and I am a wimp with the temperature too!)

Aww thanks bower :) you’re right, a few years ago it would’ve been too much and actually good point about the house move. We’ve had a lot of stuff to wade through since moving here, but being here has helped enormously as we have more space, better location too.

Glad I finally printed off the weekly home ed plan. Last night. 😳😂 We’ve been using it digitally and adapting as we went due to so much else going on and last minute changes like cancelling the paired learning as DS’ friend has a cold. Still got plenty of work done though considering my lack of organisation.

Was going to waffle more about that but DH has fixed the shower so I can de-chlorine myself. And then it’s DS’ autism support session. Fridays are crazy.

Cineraria · 25/09/2020 16:21

Happy anniversary, Wellies! 21 years is very impressive and vinyl sounds much more fun as an anniversary theme (although I originally misread the other themes you mentioned through the corner of my eye as bras or 'nickers!) Hope your meal goes well. How nice that your children all arranged their own cards and your son made brownies. What a treat!

Bower, I hope your resignation will lead to much happier times for you. It sounded like you were having such an awful, stressful time.

I'm impressed by the porridge breakfasts. I wish I liked porridge but I really can't seem to. I like the taste of oats generally in things like oatcakes, bread, flapjacks, crumbles etc. Both boys liked it a lot until I gave them Oatibix on holiday and now they only like that!

DS1 has a cough and we couldn't get a test so he is off school until Tuesday next week. As a result, the flying has slipped a bit. They cause so much chaos together that I can't keep up with them and nowhere is ever tidy enough to clean. Just as I was getting used to the new routine of him going there every day, too! Then he has two weeks at school and another two weeks off for half term. They didn't suggest any work for him to do in the days he didn't feel ill but we have tried to do reading every day, something for pen control like writing or drawing shapes and something numeracy related, mainly to keep him cooperative with listening to and following instructions!

I need to get more organised, really. This is going to keep happening and I don't want to end up in a tip every time he is off, so I need to think of things to keep them busy so they don't wind each other up whenever I'm doing anything that doesn't involve at least one of them.

Today he is going to read the recipe and weigh the ingredients for his birthday cake. Tonight I have to decorate it to look like the paw print on a shield on the Paw Patrol Lookout tower. At least he didn't want the whole tower!

Spreadingcomfrey · 25/09/2020 18:14

Happy anniversary Wellies and enjoy your musical celebration! 🍾🥂🎶

foxessocks · 25/09/2020 18:33

cineraria argh that's frustrating! My house is the same when the kids are both here, they just undo whatever I try to do! It's amazing how tidy the house looks on a weds afternoon when I've had a morning on my own tidying up 😆
Is your ds feeling ok in himself, was it a cold do you think?

Well dd friend left at 6pm after being here since 1pm Shock I feel quite frazzled now!

Kids have had pizza for dinner and are playing their new paw patrol computer game before bed. I think they are exhausted tbh so need to get them up to bed soon. Also because I am keen to open the prosecco 😂

Thank goodness it's Friday 😅

foxessocks · 25/09/2020 18:35

Oh and I've been complaining a lot about work this week but today my line manager dropped off a bunch of flowers for me to say thanks for my extra hours , such a lovely gesture ❤️

Spreadingcomfrey · 25/09/2020 19:53

That's so lovely Foxes and I am sure much deserved! And lovely to read down thread how you have been enjoying working despite the stresses!

[We are stuck in town this w/e waiting for result of dd's C-19 test. Fed up because it's cold and miserable and I am so cross with myself because I have attacked some hazlenut biscuits which I don't even like that much! ]

Sing very excited for you, best of luck with the prospective jobs!
Wellies happy anniversary! Any tips on how to make a marriage last? We've got our first anniversary coming up soon (the wedding album fixed and crisis averted).
SC I hope the results come back soon and that they are negative.

Ta da (not much):
🎉Morning and evening routines
🎉Reasonably productive work day

Today I've orded a box of body paint, planning on doing a bit of body painting and taking few pregnancy photos in the next few weeks. I clearly spent a bit too much time of Pinterest looking at body paint ideas of pregnant bump 😬

Hiya all, late one tonight. I’ve been marking some work, but I’m absolutely knackered I could just collapse. We went to Starbucks after nursery because pumpkin spice lattes are out again. The DC’s dad came along, I’ve found out that he broke up with his gf which explains why he’s been so present lately. I’m just hoping he doesn’t change with the next gf.

We had pasta with salmon and peas for tea which was nice, I’m really craving a chinese though. Also how freezing is it!

lisette we’ve been watching a few already, the DC love them😂

Happy anniversary wellies!💐

I hope those with symptoms get tests/negative results

foxes that’s lovely about the flowers!

Sorry, I haven’t replied to everyone. I’m so tired.
