First of all, a big thank you to SingToTheSky for leading us through the August thread, (you can park your mop and hang up your duster now)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here . Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

(Hi, sorry, it's me who is a bit socially inept. It's no-one else's fault, and deffo no need for naughty corners. I misunderstand people / situations, so absolutely nothing to do with IWill or anyone else. Just easier for me not to be on mumsnet. As you were, and sorry for messing about in such a nice thread)

Lisette1940 · 14/09/2020 10:38

There isn't a raspberry shortage locally especially since I'm off fruit at the moment Grin. I don't think you'll have problems sourcing them mc. That said the recipe calls for raspberry preserves which is like jam but with a higher proportion of fruit. The recipe seems to call for the preserve to be mixed with fresh fruit. If you used jam the cake would be more jammy than fruity if you know what I mean as preserves is basically lots of fruit preserved with sugar. Looks like a lovely cake!

Lisette1940 · 14/09/2020 10:40

won - you're fine and a big welcome to the thread.

The naughty corner is a good place not a place of correction. It's where we go to relax and let our hair down virtually!

Lisette1940 · 14/09/2020 10:41

Sorry won didn't realise you were leaving. If you change your mind you are really welcome here.

Thanks Zoo, lisette, Mc.

10mins before I was going to leave my house to get to interview, school called and advised we call 111 we might need testing.

111 answer phone message told us to go to online coronavirus testing online page.

There are no home testing kits available.
We now are booked into a testing centre and need to go there. I dont mind as i wud follow the rules but we are now self isolating for 14days or until we know the results of the test.

I informed school and they have told us to self isolate for 14 days until we get the results.
The woman had the nerve to ask me why I hadnt replied to whether i was going to attend the interview. I told her I sent a email at 8am this morning and inquiring whether i shud attend as kids are ill?!

Sigh.

I think the school didnt mind face to face interviews as they see me at the school gates every day. So they are in contact with me already. They really need a midday supervisor as soon as possible.
Maybe they will move to zoom interviews now.

What a morning.

Sorry for lack of personals...i will read later....i am....i dont know....

Thank you for your support everyone, I truely held it together until i had to get dressed as then it felt real.
You encouragement really helped thank you! Star

Dancingtomusic · 14/09/2020 10:56

Thank you wellies too!

Lisette1940 · 14/09/2020 11:20

Gosh Dancing what a morning. I really feel for you.

SingToTheSky · 14/09/2020 11:38

@Wondayatatime1 please do feel free to stay, lurk, post - misunderstandings are common online as it is, trust me we get it! 💐 I get a lot of anxiety from posting online sometimes, this thread is one of the only places I don’t, but that’s because I’ve been posting here for years, these things take time and I know what it’s like to overthink or to worry what someone means from their words because tone is lost when typing. I’m autistic and panic about social stuff a lot. We really would love to have you here so please don’t feel you can’t stay! ❤️

I was brave and phoned the college!!! The lady I spoke to was lovely and totally understood the situation, and said they wouldn’t nitpick over a few weeks below the 12 months because she was clearly a long term HE student before that. But I’m still not sure the part time provision would be right for her as she needs input of others a lot - we’d have to really consider how to make sure she wasn’t sitting around on her phone too much, we’d have to get tutors in small groups I think. It was different before she went back to school - heaps of home ed specific activities, workshops, trips - but of course there’s not so much available now because of Covid and nobody knows how much that will change in the next year or more.

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/09/2020 12:12

singStarfor facing the telephone call, and a lot to think over now
Dancing what a morning!
MC(i think?) I'd use frozen defrosted if can't get fresh raspberries
Will love a bit of spring onion mash (or dare I add shredded cabbage too for delicious colcannon)
Lisette another fine quote❤️

TheUpholder · 14/09/2020 12:39

Wellies you’ve made a cracking start! I’m impressed with your house-wifely using up of the potatoes

Zoo I think the purpose of teenagers is to induce guilt. It sounds like you handled it the right way to me. Hope she feels better once she’s got today over and done with. Eek at the rat.

Good luck Dancing! Hope it’s gone well.

Glad the college conversation sounded positive sing.

Won hope you’re still lurking, and so feel free to post again if you ever need us. This really is a lovely corner of Mumsnet. We are all an understanding bunch and if there’s different ways to take a comment then I always assume it’s the nice way.

Good luck with the cake Mc. I’d go frozen too but I am not a regular or knowledgeable baker

Ta da:
✅ 2 x LOLs, first is almost dry on the line, second is a few more winter coats about to be hung out.
✅ beds made
✅ played with DD in the garden with a good amount of weeding and pruning done also
✅ lunch of scrambled egg on toast in the garden.

About to go back in and tackle upstairs bleurgh but I’m enjoying the sunshine too much.

TheUpholder · 14/09/2020 12:42

Oh and I love the quotes Lisette and Zoo. Good principles to live by.

Apologies for the cross post Dancing. What a stress. I’m a big believer in if it’s meant to be it’ll be, so if this job doesn’t come off it’s for a reason Flowers

Bowerbird5 · 14/09/2020 12:53

Hi,
Just been catching up with ALL your posts over the weekend mainly Sunday. Been a bit bleugh here.
Yesterday morning had a very chatting phone call from DS3 and as I was about to ring off as I wanted to watch a particular Mass he says “ Are the real reason I rang is...” so I listened as DS3 is the most anxious fragile ( not the right word ) of my boys( ah must remember they are men). Turns out a car flew over the bridge ( yes I do mean flew) crashing into several cars and luckily for us and neighbour into a lamp post which stopped it crashing into our house that DS 3 lives in. He was in the kitchen making coffee for his mate and said the whole house shook. He thought it was an earth tremor. Driver not hurt and scarpered before the police arrived. Whew! So lucky DS 3 wasn’t going in or out of the house. Mate was going to move his car but then decided he couldn’t be bothered which is just as well as would now be scrap. So missed Mass and later on I actually forgot it was Sunday as we had lunch then DH offered to take me out for a drive and a walk by coast. When we came back I got on with making tea and forgot.🤦🏼‍♀️😚

Won please come back.

  1. We don’t worry on here even if someone does make a oops! I didn’t think you had anyway. People on here are sooooo lovely and also understanding that someone might just be having a bad day so are very, very supportive.
  2. I wrote a disclaimer for doing personals because a) I am a lot older and memory isn’t what it used to be. b) I have had a very stressful year which I can’t really talk about except it is work related and therefore I forget things or who said what. I just do the ones I remember and sometimes muddle it up. Everyone is very forgiving.
  3. We all thought your opening posts was lovely so do come and join us.
  4. The naughty sometimes haughty corner is a place we put ourselves for not flying or if we are really 🤬off with life in general. We leave snacks and cosy blankets in there to snack and hid under until we feel like coming out.
  5. Some people have been here way longer than me but made me feel very welcome. Some pop in and out depending how busy or hacked off they are.

Right 🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒👋👋👋👋👋👋 to all as battery about to go.

Bowerbird5 · 14/09/2020 12:53

Will charge up and pop back.

Dancingtomusic · 14/09/2020 13:30

Won please come back and post. Everyone is lovely here. I am still learning about posting online and just learnt how to write in bold in the last few days. So dont worry, we are here when you are are ready. I am not the best writer, i usually have seconds before a child is screamming 'Mummy! Where are you!'

Currently i am hiding in my bedroom from my 4 year old. She suddenly became angry because her unicorn drawing got ruined and I refused to draw another one! Hmm

Bower my goodness. So glad to hear your son and neighbours are ok. So glad the lampost stopped the flying car!

sing welldone for making the phone call!

up yes i believe that too. If its meant to be, its meant to be. Thank you.

zoo how do you manage to do so much housework already?! Star

Got in car to be tested....and got there....and myself and kids where not allowed in for testing as we do not display the correct symptoms for covid. (They thought they kids just have alittle common cold and thats what I thought too.)
The kids were scared so I was so relieved they didnt need to be tested. i was scared too Phew.

Dh could be tested as he has been coughing.
So we will definately be self isolating until he gets his test result.

This has been such an odd day here.Confused

Hi all! Sorry I was AWOL over the weekend, we had quite a nice time actually. DC’s dad (or That Man as wellies called him, love that!) turned up at 9:30, just as I was about to go. He left his car at mine and we decided to travel together, the kids were chuffed bless them. He did forget to book a hotel room, so I shared the bed with DC and he slept on the sofa thing. The weather was amazing, minimal arguments as well. I’m quite disappointed to be home really. Thank you all for the well wishes!

Hi zoo we haven’t met, I’m sorry that things have been so difficult.

I have read through but have forgot all my personals will start again from today.

foxessocks · 14/09/2020 18:47

Needless to say my jumping back in didn't go to plan, Mondays are such a whirlwind!

MogTheSleepyCat · 14/09/2020 20:41

Good evening all, sounds like there are a few of us going through a rough patch. Flowers , Gin , and Cake to all who need it in the haughty corner.

My family had to get covid tested today, DS has a cough (which is probably asthma related, or the start of new-term lurgies) and school are insisting on tests. So we are isolating at home having been through the drive thru testing.

Very little done in way of flying today, but hey ho, tomorrow is another day.
LOL done and hung out to dry, brought in and folded
Chicken chores and free range time
DW x2
Beds made

Chocolate Cake Biscuit Chocolate Cake Biscuit

Links for Tuesday 15th September

We are in Zone 3: The main Bathroom and One Other Room The other room can be your spare room, study, even the garage.

Spend 15 minutes decluttering here before moving onto detailed cleaning.

Our missions for Tuesday are to thoroughly clean your bathroom bin, and gather up anything from the Other Room that can be donated / given away

Baby step 15 is add making your bed to your morning routine I prefer to make mine in the afternoon once it has ‘aired’; it feels unhygienic in my mind to make it as soon as you get out.

Habit of the month is Before Bed Routine

Tuesday daily focus is planning : meal planning, activities, look ahead to next week to see what you can do today to help – organize any birthday cards, paperwork etc
