First of all, a big thank you to SingToTheSky for leading us through the August thread, (you can park your mop and hang up your duster now)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here . Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

Welcome Whirl Smile. Welcome also to Won, please do stay, this is a lovely thread.

Hello all. Things have improved here. DD2 has had her Covid swab results back and she is negative so was able to go to gymnastics today and can go back to school tomorrow and DH can go to work. DD1 has done over half of her 14 days isolation (her bubble at school had a positive case so she has to isolate for 14 days - rest of family don’t need to). Plus although she has the home learning which sucks it is going to be much easier for her to concentrate with DD2 at school.

Ta da:-
Calendar check (as much as is possible in these weird times) - feel much better now I have a plan for next week

Big ta da - actually sat with DH and our work diaries and looked at our annual leave. Christmas discussion coming up as a warning to people who feel it is too early... so we have now both requested annual leave around DD1’s birthday and also have a plan for a day close to Christmas for me to request off. No guarantees we will get it but I am optimistic as it is not one of the proper holiday days and DH is on a day off that day anyway. That way hopefully we can all have a family day close to Christmas even if DH ends up working the Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Sorry for those of you that hate talking about Christmas but in our jobs (and I’m sure many other jobs) we have to have requests in for September.

Made some more progress with tidying DD2’s desk. I am trying to focus on getting things a bit more organised for home learning.

But now, I am going to SIT DOWN in front of the telly and relax before bed.

Mog, thanks for the great thread leading while being so busy at work. Sing, hope you are able to speak to the college and get some clarity tomorrow for DD1. Hope you feel better soon Lisette.

Big wing flaps to everyone else.

TooStressyTooMessy · 13/09/2020 22:25

Just scrolled back. Upholder, fingers crossed for results for your DD soon. That, happy birthday to DS Cake. Bower, it really sounds as if your shoulder needs looking at. Hope you can get it seen Flowers.

Mc3209 · 13/09/2020 22:33

Ta Da:
🎉LOL X3: washed, dried, and folded
🎉Aquarium weekly maintenance X3. At some point this week I need to do a filter maintenance for all 3 of them. Want to have it all sorted before I get even more uncomfortable and definitely before the baby is due. That should buy me few months without having to worry about those.
🎉Usual morning and evening routines.
🎉Potted all remaining ficus cuttings. I am a bit sceptical whether these last two will root properly, but I guess will find out soon enough.

TooStressy I know exactly what you mean re getting annual leave sorted for Christmas. I've worked every Christmas for the past 4 years. We are quite unconventional multifaith family, but I miss family-together-holiday spirit. This year will be a first year in a long while when both myself and DH will be off over the festive season at the same time. Quite excited about it!
Whirl big welcome! Sounds like you have a wonderfully busy household!
Lisette I hope you feel better soon.

Right, that's me for today. 🍒👋to everyone!

SingToTheSky · 13/09/2020 23:33

ta da
📚reading
📚wrote a list of overwhelming stuff
📚went out for some quiet time and by the time I came back DH had done a lot of the list!
📚bought birthday present and card for friend’s baby
📚loads of planning

SingToTheSky · 13/09/2020 23:37

Oh and
📚bought a few home ed supplies and household bits

Both the girls are sniffly and a little sneezy, and DD1 says her throat feels scratchy. Sigh.

SingToTheSky · 13/09/2020 23:43

Agh multiple posts sorry, my memory is crap today. I also:
📚got the Caglets to write a list of their clubs and what they needed for each one so we can later type it up. Mask and hand sanitiser feature on many of them!
📚sorted my/DD1’s meds for the week

Tomorrow’s plan:

  1. See how the girls are and what is happening - they don’t have the key Covid symptoms, just cold symptoms, so that means it’s up to us to decide right?!
  2. Ring college
  3. Complete and print weekly plan and “learning with friend” plan (this also depends on verdict of 1.)
  4. Weigh self
Really must try and sleep now.
Lisette1940 · 13/09/2020 23:56

Yeah see how it goes tomorrow sing. Ds had a runny nose but no fever or cough so in he went. Turns down lights in naughty corner and places hot milky drinks there tomorrow is another day fledglings.

I need advice please.

I just checked my email at 7am this morning and I have a interview at 10.20am today for midday supervisor role.
Omg.

My two children (reception and year one) have been ill over the weekend. Colds i think- runny noses, slight temps, achey bodies.
I am not sending them to school today. I can leave them with hubby who is not feeling well either. I dont feel 100%.

What am i supposed to do in this situation? Help.
I have emailed the school and awaiting a reply. But panicking alittle bit. Confused

TooStressyTooMessy · 14/09/2020 08:27

Oh wow. Dancing, what is their temperature?

Dancingtomusic · 14/09/2020 08:34

Hi toostressy,
Its not too hot, i am just using my hand to check. I dont know what i hv done with my thermometer.

They seem slightly warmer than usual and they had a distrubed night of sleep....

TooStressyTooMessy · 14/09/2020 08:38

It’s whether you are worried about Covid in which case you need to get them tested (good luck - the system is a shambles Angry) and all isolate. Or whether you think they just have a cold as you say in which case you technically could go in.

I think in the current climate, I would try to postpone or see if you could do a phone or video interview. I’d also phone the school or the contact you have and ask. Schools are understandably stressed about illness right now and may well not want you in Flowers. Is the office open now to phone?

TheUpholder · 14/09/2020 08:38

Oh dear! What bad timing. If you are happy they aren’t Covid symptoms I’d leave them with DH and go, as it won’t be for long. If you have any doubt (and them having a temp would make me cautious) then I’d explain you all have symptoms so are self-isolating until you get a test and ask if you can have a phone/zoom interview instead?

Still no word on our relative’s test, so we are still stuck in. No symptoms in our house except DD’s snotty nose which she’s had on and off for a few weeks. I’m really hoping the results come in today as I’m eager to get back to work - it really was bad timing work wise, and I’m having to use annual leave which I had all nicely planned out over the next 6 months Sad. Still the important thing is we are all healthy and not spreading anything nasty.

Welcome Whirl! Sounds like you have your hands full, hope we can be of assistance.

Wellies you’ve got this. Hope you left some of that read in the naughty corner

I’m struggling with the uncertainty of how my week is going to pan out, but I’m determined not to let everything go to pot either way. Upstairs home bleurgh and some bathroom scrubbing to do this morning. Going to hit the ironing pile later, and will do work and pre-school uniforms in the hope we can use them. Also planning some more garden time for DD and some more weeding for me.

Ta da:
✅ breakfast
✅ quick tidy downstairs as failed at my evening routine last night (but did manage the self care bit of it)
✅ Dishes washed
✅ LOL in.

I’ll finish this cuppa, get me and DD dressed and get moving.

Hope the week goes well for you all fledglings.

Dancingtomusic · 14/09/2020 09:01

Thank you toostressy and up

I think its colds from 1st week at school. But I wouldnt want school think i am bringing some illness in so I have emailed them.
Oh goodness....tests....i have heard they are difficult to get here too.

I am going to shower and get ready for interview incasw I do have to go in or what a great idea to do a zoom call! I will email them that suggestion.
Thank you guys (big hug!)

SingToTheSky · 14/09/2020 09:10

Yes if it’s just cold symptoms it’s fine (otherwise everyone would be off over the next couple of months!). I’m surprised they aren’t doing zoom interviews though? Or even phone? You could ask if that’s an option. But if they don’t have a fever/cough/loss of taste and you aren’t going to be sitting there sneezing all over then I’d probably go.

I managed to sleep till after 8 this morning. DD1 went in as she is also just a bit sniffly. She never really says much in the mornings anyway so not sure how she felt emotionally. Cagletini staying home as she’s in that “can’t quite talk properly” bunged up stage 🤣

Just booking dance classes as I forgot and now there are no spaces today but that works out better as she has that cold.

Dancingtomusic · 14/09/2020 09:23

Thanks Sing...going to get dressed and go to interview...unless they cancel it.

SingToTheSky · 14/09/2020 09:27

Cross post! (I was very slow today) hope it can be sorted xx

Right, booking done for this week and next, and I noticed the discount offer wasn’t working for after that so I’ve messaged (it works out at 3 classes a week for £8 which is amazing!). Now to get dressed, have breakfast and meds, and ring college. I’ve definitely got that “so nervous I want to not do it in case they tell me bad news” feeling 🤦‍♀️ But there’s no way I can risk procrastinating with this.

Then I need to finish and print the weekly schedule but I have at least got today sorted (he’s doing maths now) so can just tell him what needs doing.

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/09/2020 09:49

sing🍀🍀🍀🍀thinking of you

SingToTheSky · 14/09/2020 09:59

Love that quote zoo and it’s extra poignant now in times of weird corona rules where so much of life seems missing. Must make the best of what we have! ♥️ Sorry life has been so cruel this morning, it’s not fun having so much anxiety and stress from all sides. Xx

Lisette1940 · 14/09/2020 10:18

Good luck Dancing. So true zoo - one of my favourite quotes is 'Do what you can, with what you have, where you are'. Not that I completely adhere to it - I do pine a bit for Ireland and I have a difficult family of origin but it's certainly something to aim for!

Mc3209 · 14/09/2020 10:20

Morning everyone!
Dancing You will rock that interview, got everything crossed! Let us know how it went!

Zoo What a morning for you. All the best vibes your way Flowers It can only get better.

Up limbo state is a pain, especially when you are forced to use your annual leave for it. Hopefully it shouldn't be long until the results are back.

Ta Da so far:

  • Morning routine
  • One quick LOL in

Ladies who bake, can you tell me please if I can use raspberry jam instead of fresh raspberries in this recipe?
www.countryliving.com/food-drinks/recipes/a41986/raspberry-pink-velvet-cake-recipe/
I will be baking birthday cake for DH tomorrow, and just making back up plans in case I won't find any raspberries.

TooStressyTooMessy · 14/09/2020 10:20

Great quotes zoo and Lisette.
