Housekeeping

Since the lockdown, what's the state of your home?

We're 3 weeks into lockdown and I was hoping our house would be tidier and cleaner, but that hasn't happened so far, although we have done some tiny jobs that needed to be done for a while.

Is your home a) better b)the same c) worse since lockdown ? Us it's b mostly (but our b = untidy and not lovely) with a bit of c some days, so the opposite to what I hoped would happen!

Much messier. My work is busier then ever ( I work from home) and i have to cook and care for my family.
Drowning under housework.

Definitely untidier than usual, the garden looks amazing though as we have been out there everyday sorting it out so indoors is a tip. Hoping once the weather changes this week we will get on top of it

Worse. Cleaner can’t come, both trying to do FT WFH with DSs who are 7 and just 4...so both working until 10pm each night to get finished. Keeping on top of kitchen, loos, laundry and washing up is all we’re managing. DH did a full hoover last weekend but we’re back in chaos. I’m hoping we can catch up over Easter. God I miss my cleaner.

C) Worse. It usually gets cleaned fairly regularly for visitors but this will probably be the only time in my life when i know that no one outside the family will be even poking their head round the door. Will give it a clean soon though and enjoy the sparkly feeling while it lasts.

A mess!

No cleaner, 4 adult sized people at home all day every day. 12 meals eaten every day plus all the drinks and tea and coffee. All that has to be cleared up perpetually.

Plus 2 out of 4 of us have been really unwell and taken a lot of looking after and not been able to contribute anything in terms of doing housework.

I am really jealous of everyone crafting, baking and gardening all over the place! I've never been busier.

It’s looking great!! Trying to do a deep clean on at least one thing a day, yesterday was the oven, did all the blinds and windows last week.

Today just to sunny, so went for a walk in the morning and just stayed in the garden playing backgammon this afternoon.

Pretty clean and have spring cleaned two bedrooms. I like to do a massive clean once a week but with everyone at home its little and often at the moment.

Tumbleweed101 · 12/04/2020 07:25

B/C at the moment. I’m still working so not really having much more time to clean but the rest of the family are home all day so just a build up of general use through the day.

I have concentrated on the garden the last couple weeks since the weather is better and that’s looking much nicer though.

Mine is worse but we're trying to stay on top of things.

I've realised that our b is so bad, it's very easy to slip into c, but a huge amount of work to visibly get to a. I've been trying all weekend and so far it still is just b. I've talked to DH and we're going to try a rota next week to see if that helps us.

Mostly worse. DH and I are both WFH and the teenagers are at home FT too. Plus our cleaner isn’t coming once a week to help us keep on top of it.

We have finally managed to build DDs flat pack wardrobe though. Which has been waiting to be done for a while. So the hallway looks tidier.

Yesterday it would have been (c) as I've been gardening, doing outside jobs including pressure washing the patio, and some decorating so the normal tidying & cleaning had been paused for a few days, plus some of the outside mess got tracked in my the dog.
Today it's is (b) as I've had a push on the house and got the teens to help out.

Normally have a cleaner weekly, although she gave notice at the beginning March (unrelated to COVID) so I'm down with (b) on am onto my basis.

Chasingsquirrels · 12/04/2020 17:24

... so I'm fine with (b) on an on going basis.

Same tidiness but definitely dirtier underneath. So mostly b but some bits (hob I’m looking at you) is very c

Keep forgetting to do the jobs that the cleaner did Blush

I'm working ft from home. 2 dc here. I don't have more time for housework.
I was hoping to do some spring cleaning but it hasn't happened!
But it's fine. It's our home, we are living in it and it's great.

Mine’s looking a lot better - partly due to lockdown but also because I have a baby on the way so have been desperately decluttering and tidying before they arrive.

Downstairs is almost spotless - I’ve just got the hallway to do now. I spent about five hours yesterday doing a massive declutter and tidy of my bedroom ready for the baby - the first time it’s been done properly in about two years Blush I think I collected about three vacuum cylinders of dust and that was just from the floor!

I’ve still got to do the bathroom, spare room (which is full of crap) and the outside of the windows now, which are filthy.

The garden and shed need tonnes of work but that will have to wait until we can get a gardener round again (money permitting).

We have returned to C over the Easter weekend, because it is not actually my job to keep everyone else tidy. The constant kitchen use and inability of people to put shit away rather than down is starting to grate. I am providing 18 meals a day, plus additional drinks and snacks (although I don't cook them all as DSs 1 and 2 tend to run midday to midnight and cook at 11pm) and it's really showing. I am furious that I clean the kitchen after dinner and regularly come down in the morning to signs of further cooking that needs putting in the DW, even if they've stacked it on the side.

What this is really showing me is how much untidier / dirtier a house gets with everyone in it making a mess (d'oh). When you're all out most of the day, it at least stays as you left it!

Report
NotGenerationAlpha · 14/04/2020 08:59

Worse. We had a cleaner and we were out of the house during work hours everyday. Now we have 4 of us in the house full time and no cleaner. DH working part time and me full time. There is just no time cleaning.

Report
LittleCandle · 14/04/2020 09:04

The garden still needs its spring tidy up, but that won't take more than about an hour. The house is slightly fluffier inside than it was, despite hoovering, because we have been clipping the dogs. One of them has a really thick coat, so we have to do it in stages because he hates it. Other than that, the pile of washing that has grown over the last couple of days will be tackled today and tomorrow as the weather is forecast to be nice and we can get it hung out.

I vacuumed all the floors/carpets in our house yesterday. It was at the, 'wipe your feet on your way out' stage.

I vacuumed our lounge carpet again this morning at 8.10am. The look on my husband's face was a picture !

I can now get on with some dusting and wiping because the vacuuming is done. Well, if I get round to it after I've done my You Tube exercise work outs.

(I don't know who these people are who are bored being at home all the time. Their life must be completely sorted including having food in. I've got so much life admin/personal admin to do I'm looking forward to being able to just do some reading for entertainment and some hobby projects. I envy those who are bored. I'm fully occupied.)

My husband is wfh so I couldn't realistically have the vacuum cleaner on whilst he's working. He works normal office hours.

The same.

I'm the cleaner so I'm just pretty much continuing my normal day job. Grin
We're a pretty tidy family by nature. And also, some shit you just learn to let go of. You can't keep on top of it all the time. I have to admit, I haven't hoovered the upstairs for a month! That's pretty bad actually. Must do that today.

Report
Times10 · 14/04/2020 12:16

I hoovered yesterday evening and you already couldn’t tell by now. Those robot hoovers seem like a great idea right now!
