Housekeeping

Since the lockdown, what's the state of your home?

We're 3 weeks into lockdown and I was hoping our house would be tidier and cleaner, but that hasn't happened so far, although we have done some tiny jobs that needed to be done for a while.

Is your home a) better b)the same c) worse since lockdown ? Us it's b mostly (but our b = untidy and not lovely) with a bit of c some days, so the opposite to what I hoped would happen!

The same. Except for more child and husband untidiness.

I am doing lots of 2&3; but the neglected 1 is taking over!

We’ve rearranged the living/dining room 3 times so far during lockdown, trying to give us as much space as possible and failing miserably!
And yes, I agree with the 3 types of HW, smartcasual. Number 1 is as good as usual (so not great) n2 is not happening and n3 is slowly making progress. I think the more we’re staying in, the more we’re realising we just have too much stuff for the size house. But it’s a tricky job, whittling everything down, when there’s children underfoot.

We have de cluttered a lot but there is nowhere to put our unwanted clutter as all the charity shops are shut. It’s all piled in boxes in one room making that room pretty much unusable.

There are three types of house-work:

1 - the day-to-day ie food-shopping, cooking, keeping kitchen and bathroom respectable, bins, laundry, general tidying up etc.

2- actual cleaning ie windows, surfaces, floors and everything in between such as stairs.

30- decluttering and sorting.

Under lockdown, I was hoping to do loads of 3 but am stuck doing 1 & 2.

I find getting to the point where the house is in a good enough state to start decluttering hard enough ordinarily, why I thought it would be easier with everyone at home, I don't know! Confused

I miss my cleaner. I keep it superficially tidy and I have had a good scrub of kitchen floor. But other than cleaning the toilets and sinks I haven't done the bathroom floors. My son broke the vacuum a week ago and waiting for the replacement to be delivered so the carpets are not looking good.
We tend to breed clutter but with a cleaner I knew it was clean, if untidy. I'm just not getting all the jobs done that she did.
Next house I am NOT having the washing machine in the kitchen.

Mine is cleaner than usual because I have time for things like washing curtains, clearing drawers, wiping woodwork, much more than I usually do. However, the mess is something else altogether! 6 people squashed into a space and here all the time is making tidyness really hard. And it is emphatically not my job to tidy up after 5 other people with full use of arms, legs, eyes and brain!

(c). It appears the more time I have, the less I get done!

Mine is so much cleaner now because I have more time at home than normal.

I usually have a weekly cleaner and I was vaguely aware that she wasn’t working to as high a standard as she did a few years ago (she’s been cleaning for us for over 10 years) but since I’ve been cleaning myself I’ve been horrified at just how lax she has become. I’ve paid her up until the middle of June and I think after that I’ll pay her for another few weeks and give her notice.

It’s week 7460 of lockdown, and my house is probably even worse than when I started the thread! I did declutter the DCs books, but everything else is mayhem!

I'm also hoovering all the time! Toddler throws food everywhere... is he even a toddler now?! Turned three recently.

Single parent. Two teens and a baby. Got a few sorting/clearing jobs done but the crumbs are insane and feels like I am constantly hoovering.

A bit tidier than usual. Although I'm working from home the reduction in travel time etc has meant that I have a bit more time to do things, albeit quickly as the kids are about too obviously. I've also sorted out some cupboards etc that I had meant to do for a while when the children have been with their dads.

The garden is better and the loo is clean because we attack it every time we go past but the play room, front room and dining room are absolute tips and we can't get to the floor to clean it.
DH is good at cleaning but any tidying starts with him picking up one thing and saying "I don't know where this goes" and stopping.Hmm

Well, I had planned to do some spring cleaning whilst I had more time and really give my flat a good old clear out.

That still hasn’t happened yet. I’m saving it for a rainy day and we haven’t had many of those the last few weeks Grin

If anything I’ve probably got lazier, because I know nobody will be visiting my home to see how tidy/messy it is, so I’m kind of like “fuck it” GrinGrin

A , mine is cleaner and more tidy so far! Though we had 2 weeks off for Easter so now I'm back to homeschooling it may lessen.

C. All three of us - DP, 16mo DD and I - are normally out of the house all day.

I suspect my in laws’ house is infinitely tidier though, without a toddler spending four days a week destroying it.

Better...had a chance to clean more , tidy and clear some things that shouldn’t be there....but we did move into this house 6 days before Christmas. No small children and husband semi-retired. He normally would be out and about but is doing ‘jobs’ Smile

About the same, I'm WFH so I have a quick tidy round, washing up etc each day and more at weekends. DH doing very little as usual although he does all the cooking. Still have boxes to sort from when we moved in Feb. Thought I would have lots more time but I don't really!

JellyfishandShells · 16/04/2020 19:49

There’s just the two of us so it doesn’t get messed up quickly. Lots of ignorable jobs have finally got done so fiddly bathroom blinds have been done a bit at a time, brass door handles polished, tile grout bleached. Big sort out of under stairs cupboard - charity shop bags and recycling now in bike store awaiting the right time. And my DH has tackled the shed - is now possible to move around in there.

Super tidy! No teenager as he has been evacuated elsewhere for his safety and DH and I still working. If I have time off there is a limit to available activities so I have been tackling glory holes!
